the album is a metaphor for drug addiction

The entire thing. Fo realz.

When compared to APC's 'Thirteenth Step' and other random stuff Maynard's done, it seems to suggest a struggle with addiction.

If you don't believe me, read the lyrics again.

Or hell, maybe just "addiction" in general.

Of course there are other interpretations, but this one screams loudest for me, and I need to tell someone. If you disagree, it's just 'cause you suck. =p

Re: the album is a metaphor for drug addiction

It could very well be.

The title Undertow to me, seems to suggest a current, drawing people under and 'absorbing' them, so to speak.

Many of Tool's songs seem to deal with this, from the ratcheting search for pleasure suggested in Stinkfist, to the existential grief in the beginning of Parabola.

I think it was a good point you made.

People can however be addicted to many things, power, money, anger, etc...
