I've recently been studying marx in a political theory class, and during a lecture my professor was explaining the estrangement of workers, etc. he then mentioned that marx wrote that we fish in the morning, hunt in the afternoon and philosophise at night.
theres no way this can be a coincident... and if i was a better student i would totally understand this concept and how it relates the the lyrics of this song... so are there any ideas?
its obvious that maynard has read or at least heard a little of marx's ideas, otherwise the title track of this cd wouldnt exist so im just trying to figure out how this ties to the meaning of the song.

i don't think this song is contingent on his theories.. It Can be a coincidence. I like the connection -- but there seems to be some context missing in your quote,.. I don't see how it relates to the song other than the progression "the sun is burning hot again // hunter fisherman" and "sun is setting cool again // thinker fisherman". And how would it tie in with the rest of the song?

But i'd like to see some elaboration from someone who knows more about Marxism than i

It is my opinion that this song is kindof about being lost... mabye...
Ya know... "seems like I've been here before..." line is like someones lost and is trying to figure out if he/she is wealking in circles.

However, with the marx connection I am inclined to go the route of mabye it is about repeating mistakes and how we, as a race, do it.

But WTF do I know. I'm still trying to figure out the philosophy behind them. I'm still trying to "tree" it.
LOL.

like the connection. now im not big on marx's ideas but i do know that he said that there would be a utopian sociey a truly communist society where all are equal and essentially one. this hasnt been realised by any 'communist' parties ever. it has only been socialist. but im sure the idea of everyone to be equal is a concept at home with unity conciousness and other themes brought upp in the lyrics of tool.

ok now this song makes sense to me now. THe whole marxist thing has pulled it together. I had orginally thought the hunter and the fishermen were archetypes. You fish in the morning because you try to remeber your dreams, water is a symbol of the unconscious, you hunt in the day chasing your dreams, or working and you philosophize in the evening becuase your about to go to sleep again and your mind has been spent on everthing but pondering the meaning of your life.
