This is definately a stretch, but is it possible that Maynard thinks that we will try and interpret this song as having meaning so that we would assume that it doesn't, and therefore associate meaning with this segment (if that makes any sense to anyone here)?

i think of it as a useful idiot being the consumer of the music, and by being useful it is that they buy the music and this track just helps to complete an album for us to buy. so this track is just a space filler that helps them produce an album which in turn we buy. as for the idiot part, well when arent the fans of a band too excited about the music

I think (especially on Aenima) that there are tracks that help "clear the palate" so to speak.
Jumping straight from H. to 46&2 would be too much for people to handle. Both of those songs are heavy. Useful Idiot slows us down, lets us collect our thoughts, and prepare for the epic 46 & 2.

Whenever I listen to Useful Idiot, I think to myself, "I'm almost there. Forty six and two just ahead of me [insert 46&2 riff]. Oh god, midas, you're so witty. Heh."

I'll have to agree with Midas here. There are segue tracks between every song starting with "Useful Idiot" between "H." and "Forty-Six & 2". It gives a roller coaster kind of feeling to the album which I love. "Intermission" is softer with the organ and then "jimmy" rolls in with the creepy guitar. There's also "(-) Ions" before "Third Eye"; same deal, they "clear the palate" or just give you a break. It helps make the following that much more dramatic since the music drops off between each "real" song track. It works really well to make this album such a masterpiece.

i always thought 'useful idiot' just meant that. the track is an 'idiot' as it doesn't have much to it, but it's useful because it's a great segue, and as midas said, a cool down between powerful songs.

besides, where would useful idiot go?

I completely agree with the clear-palate-looking-forward-to-that-fat-bass-riff theory.

the song is pretty much an ugly sound (though not unpleasant), making 46n2 sound even better

have you guys ever listened to the end of the vinal album...

What bluetape said: I remember reading an interview or an observation where someone noted that this was the last track on the first side of the vinyl. It's the sound of the record ending, supposed to confuse people or something.

i have always assumed that 'useful idiot' on vinyl is literally that vinyl noise, where the track on cd is a recording of said sound. so is useful idiot on vinyl not actually a track but a noise which is created live? perhaps someone with said vinyl could clear this up...

It's definitely a track on the vinyl. Sounds like the record has stopped, but it hasn't.

no...I think he is an idiot too. We are all idiots. In a way. I mean, if we are into this music, we have definately got something in commmon with Maynard.

Maynard made us idiots by making us listen to a skipping turn table....funny shit. Which ironically leads into the best song on the album.....Point taken!!
