Not really. The majority of my friends don't like Tool and prefer hip-hop, rap, more mainstream rock....and all of them thought Schism was bad ass back when it was on the radio when we were in high school. I can think of a couple guys I know in particular that can't stand to listen to songs like Lateralus and love Schism and Aenema.

So, again, I don't really agree with you there.

Well I know a whole lot of people who do not like it very much, and I know a whole lot of people who do like it. We are having a pretty dumb argument here. I suppose I have just always been under the impression that true "radio friendliness" meant that a song was confined to syrupy sweet symple melodies, cliche lyrics and stuck to the 3-4 minute format. Maybe I am just misinterpreting, and we are talking rock radio, of course. Maybe we don't agree, but I still believe they could release a very "unradiofriendly" song in Vicarious. I mean the distinct possibility DOES exist, and I'm sure you won't deny that. In regards to the clip, we are just chasing our tails, until, at least, someone confirms this is indeed, not Tool. Or of course, in the longshot that does exist, that someone confirms it really IS them. I'm waiting with baited breath. =P

my vote is that this is part of a tool song. everyone that keeps saying it's miocene needs to listen to the damn tracks in question. it most certainly is not.

i'm 100% sure this is none other than TOOL. the "radio-friendly" argument on this thread is a moot point. with a 34 sec vocal track and a 1:04 instrumental how can anyone tell what is and isn't radio-friendly...it's just retarded to even make a stance on the topic.

regardless, like i've stated before, if this isn't tool, it's the closest anyone (any band) has EVER come to sounding anything like Tool, period! I mean the atmosphere, the guitar sounds, bends, sustains, riffs, style, tone, composition, sequence may seem easy for some to mimic, but i've heard all this other crap people think is tool and i can easily say i've NEVER heard anyone come close to their sound.

maybe someone that hasn't been listening to tool for too long, someone that is somewhat familiar with them but doesn't listen to them as closely, or a radio tool listener, would disagree. i can knowingly say this and can make a logical assumption based on my own history of listening to everything this band has ever recorded and released for consumption.

Agree 100%, well I suppose everyone already knows this. Every time I listen to it, it seems more and more, and it's been stuck in my head for quite a while now. Not many things do that to me. I'd just like to hear what the finished product sounds like. Well I guess, if this is them, we'll get to hear it right quick here. It seems so dumb and obsessive.compulsive to be this into a 30 second clip, but the wait has been long. And we are just so close now.

I just hear different things in it every time I listen to it. My mind clicks into Parabol, The Patient, No Quarter, and actually Passive too. It's a cool little piece. And it just really has that "Tool" sound.

If it weren't for the second part where he picks like The Patient, I'd almost think APC. First part actually sounds like Passive the more and more I listen to it.

amhx147
04-09-2006, 07:35 PM

mancalledsun
04-09-2006, 07:35 PM
In my opinion, there's no way that's new Tool... it just sounds like another band putting on their best impression, playing what they think Tool should sound like. That song (or clip) sounds like it would be from Lateralus, if anything.

Then again, some of the album is said to be pre-Lateralus...

thepatient_10k
04-09-2006, 07:36 PM
no clue, no clue at all...

i like the theory that they're rough mixes that get sent back and forth from the producer to the band members..but its just a theory and the leak could have been made in someones basement.

Also, here is what Andy King said about the song in question:

Thanks to Fourth Part of a Circle and Andy King for this one:
Track 1- “Vicarious” (7min 3sec).
Mesmeric start. Hypnotic beat. Jagged, angular off beats. Familiar trancey passages punctuated by a guitar part reminiscent of an older Tool track. Tribal drum beats fuck with a lovely melody and climax with Maynard’s vocals.

I am a little suprised that the single hasn't leaked yet, since you'd think some dj out there has a copy. As far as the rest of the record, I'm not suprised, since they've been hand delivering, monitoring, and taking the album back with them at listening parties. Once it gets shipped out, and most likely enters the warehouse of the retail outlets, there is a pretty high probability that it's going to be leaked, I think.

Why would a DJ need to have a copy. These days there no need to send out actual CDs in advance, therefore there's probably not much chance of a leak until the 16th or 17th.

The only leak will come from a "borrowed" complete CD from a warehouse, or from Toolband/Army.

why bother sending it to Adam? its poor music and obviously not Tool. If that displays their "evolution", then it's time to give up on them. seriously.

Why would you doubt Andy King? he's as legit as we've had so far. again, seriously...

First off....Imagine hearing a minute of Parabol before the Lateralus release. Hmm. After AEnima got raped and abused in my cd player for 5 years, Parabol was the last thing I saw coming. Granted, it wasnt the first leak that I heard from that disc, but Lateralus as a whole, has an entirely different (still TOOL-) sound. AEnima is EPIC. IMO, Lateralus is EPIC: Part II. That is evolution, but without making the previous "state" look primitive. If 10kd matches in quality and overall greatness to AEnima, I will be very satisfied. But, Im trying not to have expectations. As far as sending the link to Adam...You never know what Adam may say. Shit, Ill message him the link.

EDIT: Gotta have a "Second off" if ya have a "First off"...

Andy King Rumours:
1. That he heard 10kd, therefore, his review goes into question.
2. That he had a pre-scheduled interview with the band the day after the listening. Apparently the band revoked this privilege when they found out he "gave away too much info" in his review..... ?
3. That he exists in this dimension.

I dont want to discredit or slander the guy, this entire pre-cd experience is unlike anything Ive ever been part of in my life. I feel like I may need rehabilitation after the release. But Andy King (in my world) is just another name on the internet.
And, didnt he apologize after the review leak and say that is was all BS anyways....or something along those lines?

ANyways....In additional defense to the legitimacy of this leak.. Where is the REAL name of the band that created this if it isnt 2L? This clip has been floating around for almost a week now, and no one has figured out who really produced it?

I am not sure this is 2L. It sounds good. I like it. Im not drooling over it. And for all I know, someone will disprove the entire thing in 5 miutes.

That is evolution, but without making the previous "state" look primitive. .

I agree for the most part, but that particular tune would be a devolution. As some have mentioned it could be possibly be a work in progress. Fingers crossed it isn't. That's still no reason for others to use clever words like "douche" and "cocksucker".. It's tired and lame.

Andy King is a liar.

no need to blame andy this way.

try to argue from his perspective.

in this question we talk about a leak. which is kind of illegal, i guess. why should andy identify this item for us - just because we know he has allready heard the new album? he has allready apologized his review as a mistake. why should he get himself again into trouble (and he would get into trouble if he identify a leak as real new tool)?

so - basing on my question to him, he had a bad position. i am very sorry for that he now gets blamed by people just because he says "it's not tool".

I'm not sure he is getting blamed for anything (besides Tool) and the previous idiot that splurted some pointless rant about him.

We'll compare his review soon enough to the album.. that'll sort this out pretty quick :P

oh it's a fact that TOOL pulled him up and had that article removed? by who's words andy's? that must be true then. who on earth would ever get on the internet and create untruthful things centered in and around this new TOOL release. it couldn't be for publicity or anything.

the only reason i am continuing my side is because you and some of these other people seem to trust this andy character as a reliable source. why? what makes him so believable that you just discredit any opposition to what he has stated? it makes no sense to me.

what makes him so unbelievable? simple.

what proof, other than andy's word do you have?

if all you can do is challenge me for not believing in good ol', honest andy, well i find that sad. hey guess what, how do you know i wasn't at the listening party, part of the media, or tied to any pr(public relations) for tool or an entity related to distribution of such media? maybe i couldve cleared up a lot of confusion for you if i'd said i was any of the above, then you'd have taken my word on it, am i correct?

i just dont trust anyone or their word over the internet and all i'm saying is i dont believe andy. he may or may not be honest. why haven't you learned that on this forum (of all forums), that most of these people are liars?

so... uhm... 5 years and, like someone els here already pointed out, only cliche riffs ?!?

Pretend, pretend, pretend to know it all...

I believe Andy King actually, personally. But I'm sure Tool has hours and hours of recorded little bits and pieces gathering dust somewhere, in fact I think it illudes that in the Guitar World article. That is how they work songs out. This could, possibly, somehow, on an off chance, by coincidence, ironically, as a longshot, be one of those damn little bits.

I don't know who said that IF this was them, this was a finished song that would be released in this quality lol... for Christ sakes folks, relax. It doesn't hurt to speculate. And it looks like the field is split about evenly on whether or not it sounds like Tool. There are alot of intelligent posts in this thing, well it seems to me like more of them have come from the pro Tool side. Alot (not all) of you Nay sayers have made some dumb ass, whining, bitching, and down right childish posts.

Anyway, I've gotta hand it to the hoaxer, if this is a hoax - OBVIOUSLY, it is a good one. Maybe that is some common ground we can all meet upon, at least.

OKAY, the gig is up. I am MAYMAY, I posted the original two mp3 audio files on RAPIDSHARE as a kind of "I think new Tool sounds like this...". In my original post I never said it was real, I simply stated that " I think new tool sounds like this.." of course there are similarities because I am a musician and I am in a band called EPOCH 1.

How I went about creating the files.

1) I really didn't take more than about 20 minutes. I plugged my guitar (PARKER P-42) into my DIGITECH 2101 rack guitar processor, and opened up a new session in Pro Tools (7.0). I started by drop tuning the low E string down to B. Actually, I usually play in E flat tuning as well, so it may actually sound like B flat. I started to play the main clean sounding riff for about a minute. Kind of sounds like bass and guitar. Then I added in the guitar that enters with feedback. That was just an accident, but I thought it sounded pretty cool, and proceeded to lay the two lead (distorted) tracks which echo each other. The sound of the guitar is pretty solid state, just because I didn't take any time to adjust it that much. It's really tube driven. Anyway, then there was the little palm muted picking part where I changed the underlying chord and kind of got that Tool sounding mute picking progression, and then that was about it, I faded the guitars because I never played to a click track and everything was getting out of synch. So I bounced it out of Pro Tools (no mixing) to an mp3 file and posted it as "WHAT I THINK NEW TOOL SOUNDS LIKE"

2) The second clip that you heard with the vocals was the same music, I just added a quick vocal track. How I did it was: Set up my mic (APEX 460) into my MBOX (pro tools hardware) and just sanfg it myself. I was going for an older Tool sound similar to the UNDERTOW record. I literally made up the words on the spot, which are for the record:

Wrestle with a conscience
Wrestle with a mind
Falling under pressure
Falling out of line
Vicarious, Vicarious

After recording the vocal I ran it through an EQ - a 1 band EQ and performed a HIGH PASS FILTER adjustement, which gives it that telephone effect. I also ran it through another EQ (10 band) performing a similar technique, and finally adding some Reverb (WAVES R-VERB, default setting).

Some of you commented that even knowing that it wasn't Tool, it sounded cool. Well, I am just the guitar player from my band, but feel free to go and check out real songs from my band at this link: http://music.download.com/epoch1/3600-8666_32-100897994.html?tag=MDL_listing_song_artist

THE REASON I COULDN'T MAKE A POST TO SAY ANYTHING MORE AND TO EXPLAIN WHAT I WAS TRYING TO DO, WAS BECAUSE I WAS SHUT OUT OF THE FORUM, AND COULD NOT REPLY ANY FURTHER. So I made this new identity and decided to finish what I started.

I'm not a bastard, I am a die hard real musician, I've played the Warped Tour, National TV, performed live over 2,700 times in the last 12 years. TOOL ROCKS, OFTEN IMITATED, NEVER DUPLICATED!
