View Full Version : gl0tch's theories about the new album artwork

God I hope so.

Because all these Alex Grey fanboi bastards who discovered their weiner, drugs, god, and Tool, 2 years after Laterauls came out are severly getting on my last nerve.

Tool reiterates to us to question authority, yet we believe everything Blair says even though the band has BLATANTLY lied to us in the past.

"But Mr., Mr.... they *SURELY* wouldn't do that again would they? I mean I paid a lot of my Nana's money to join Tool Army so I could be 1337 on several message boards"

Please give me a break. They just did. And better.

lol you believed them when they told you to question authority

NO, I believed Timothy Leary.

Have you ever read anything by Leary?
If you have, you wouldnt be saying that. And the insert in Ænima doesnt count.

no, and i don't care to

this "album mini" stuff is really weird though

has anyone even heard of a phrase like that before?

Yea, Leary was brilliant. Wasn't there a movie based on his life a while back?

gl0tch
03-20-2006, 05:51 PM
Thats the only way the whole "multiple perspectives" and "look, it follows you!" thing could work. Perhaps we're looking at an indexed version of the colored hologram.

I mean

1.) Ænima - Lenticular Technology
2.) Lateralus - Transluscent Layering Transparencies
3.) ? - ?

(notice the lack of naming anything regarding this so-far-bullshit new album.)

Though I still think it would be lame to use Alex Grey again, for an album that was clearly stated to have different connotations than Lateralus.

would be cool... don't know how well it'd work

I already said this in another thread...but, look at it like a steoscopic image like the ones on Adams Myspace. If you do it right it looks 3-D.

yes.

even if alex grey does the art....the music speaks for itself and that's what gives it an identity.

Multiple artwork could be a very real possibility... anything could be a possibility. Sure we got the "official" word from BMB... but many are skeptical about it and are ranting, raving, and/or whining about it (not you glotch).

So yeah, this is the chaos we get when BMB finally gives up some new info.

I already said this in another thread...but, look at it like a steoscopic image like the ones on Adams Myspace. If you do it right it looks 3-D.

Steroscopic images usually require two different snapshots from two different cameras aiming at the same focalpoint with some slight distance inbetween them. I really don't see the 3-D image here, I tried editing and duplicating the pic in photoshop but still no luck.

this "album mini" stuff is really weird though

has anyone even heard of a phrase like that before?

It simply means a smaller version of the album cover.

Examples: http://www.digitaldiaz.com/SaleItems/Images/pennyNOFX/album_mini.gif

http://alterbridge.com/eteam/artwork.html (Scroll down They specifically mention album mini's and this is an official band site.)

Case Closed.

EDIT: Ok, that was weird. I was trying to do a quick reply to the holograph thread and it ended up posting here. I'm guessing they merged the two?

Anyway, here's what I tried to post about the idea of a holographic cover:

That would definitely be cool if the head would "turn" to follow you. Maybe just have three different views: looking slightly left, centered, and slightly right.

Then maybe if you put it under a blacklight (or perhaps just did enough of your favorite hallucinogen) a "third eye" would appear on the forehead...

Ah, I see. I didn't know what the hell was going on. I mean I know I'm not the brightest in the world, but I was pretty damn sure I was in the holograph thread.

I guess this will do though.

BTW, if it makes you feel any better... I like twats. :)

Goldfoot
03-20-2006, 06:34 PM
No, they renamed my thread because the people here are twats.

No, because you have no real solid evidence to support the hologram theory, so it's a rumor, hence its location now. The original title is misleading and gives the impression there is reason to believe a hologram will be the new art, thus the title was changed.

gl0tch
03-20-2006, 06:34 PM
Well on top of that they deleted my other thread too.

I guess it'll be alright to post this idea in here since it seems to have gone pretty far off topic and it's at least slightly related anyway...

I know this wouldn't work with a regular jewel case, but I think it'd be cool if they used the heat-reactant stuff like on the back of the Nirvana box set. Except, instead of doing the entire cover in it, just have certain portions like text or images that would react in that way. So when your ran your hand across it, images/text/whatever would appear. Of course, this may not even be possible. I'm not really sure how that stuff works. Maybe they could do something like that for the new book or DVD though.

This could possibly be the lamest idea ever, but it seemed pretty badass to me when I first thought of it.

"How To Operate Your Brain."

It's the movie they took the dialogue out of for Third Eye on Salival. Insaaane movie!! Leary's face flashing in and out of fast-paced images alongside techno music and hypnotic phrases.

I mentioned earlier that I would try to come up with better alternatives. That being said, I guess I could live with Luke Brown if it looked like this:

http://spectraleyes.com/gallery/artworx/baphomet_detail

or Matthew Ritchie, if maybe a bit darker:

But another Alex Grey? C'mon. I would have rather had Todd McFarlane do it AND he did the new Disturbed.

03-20-2006, 08:24 PM
No. Not at all. I quite like him actually. THOUGH, I do have issues with representation AND how often many attribute his version with the end all be all of spirituality. All things considered, if Tool had Pee Wee Herman do the album art for Lateralus AND they chose him again, I'd be just as disappointed that they didnt explore further in light of all the discussion about digging deeper, etc.

Would you say that the connotations in Opiate are the same as the connotations in Aenima? They used Cam's artwork for both of those albums. Personally, I think they (Tool Band Members) like Alex Grey, like his work, and would like to support him. That okay with all you fans out there? If you are tired of seeing Grey's work, go find another artist you identify with, and paste some of their work on the new album's cover... youll be much happier that way.

gl0tch
03-21-2006, 12:13 AM
Well thats a dumb suggestion, but to answer your question, the difference between Cam and Alex is that with Alex we get a "brand" albeit a somewhat pigeonholed brand might I add.

I like Tool being associated with their own journey, not someone else's representation of their own. It worked for Lateralus in the trajectory of Tool's catalog, but not for their entire presentation here on out. It seems like since Lateralus that has been the case and that is disappointing.

gl0tch
03-21-2006, 09:21 AM
I think implied 3D would be nice, though stereoscopic imagery sometimes doesnt work for everyone's eyes... Remember, those Magic Eye things that Dave Matthews used? We wouldnt want Tool to become *too* gimmicy right?

Those photos have been nice though. I'm not sure we'll ever see them be straightforwardly photographic again. (undertow)
