At 7:48min on third eye, there is s strange noise. It almost sounds like someone saying someting backwards and then sped up a couple of times. It occurs when one of the quiet parts is just about to get louder. You have to turn up the volume too hear it "clearly". Anyone one who can figure what this sound is, please reply!

It sounds to me like maynard's saying "wouldn't you know it" with a slight increase in frequency, and added echo. I really don't think it's reversed though. It's an interesting little noise and I alwasys wondered what it was too, though it has little to do with what it's about...

I think I know what you're talking about.

It sounds like Maynard saying either "channel" or "challenge". That's just what my ears tell me.

well, whatever it is, they obviously did it on purpose because the only instruments playing at that time are the drums and they were playing very quietly. i don't think they'd let something like that slip by while recording/mixing or whatever. i always noticed that sound before; never really guessed at what the guy was saying. now i'm thinking somebody's saying something like "what channel?" but i have a hard time understanding what people are saying in normal conversation.

At last, someone else has discovered the clue to the big hidden
secret that lies in this song. Around the 7:48 mark, that little
backwards noise you hear is the word "eyes" coming from Maynard's
mouth, followed by a quick slurred note (slurred to an E). Very
clever. That little fragment is nothing in comparison to the much
bigger puzzle that lies ahead.

I'm in the process of transcribing something from some Tool song
that may or may not appear on my website when (if) it is completed,
which won't be for a while. Don't hold your breath.

I have no idea how you got "eyes" out of that noise...

Play that piece backwards and ignore the echoing.
Tool was very crafty with this part, as they are with
all their music. It sounds obvious if you have the
right tools at your disposal. I didn't know what it
was until I played it backwards with the volume up
(digitally) and special playback tools for playing
back certain parts at certain speeds with certain EQ
settings, etc. I am not 100% sure my theory is
correct, but I am 100% sure this is my current theory
and was almost 100% sure someone else may have a
theory that differs from mine. I know I'm not right.
I know I'm not wrong.

I encourage others to continue to post and reply with
an open mind as this will help to keep flaming out and
intelligent discussion in.
