i think this song is, in a way, about how you can never fully know yourself.. once you think you've figured yourself out, something changes. its easier to understand others than it is to understand yourself.

"I know you well.
you are a part of me.
I know you better than I know myself.
I know you best,
better than anyone.
I know you better than I know myself."

i know you well, ive observed you and people like you for my entire life. we're all a part of each other. we all have the same human experience (no matter how hard you fight it).. i know you better than i know myself - our minds have a blind spot. we can objectify other people and observe them, but you can never observe yourself. you can only observe reflections of yourself (mirror, family, friends, hobbies, art, etc.), but that isnt the same thing.

"You don't judge.
You can't speak.
You can't leave.
You can't hurt me.
You're just here for me to use."

the common philosophical zombie. soulless people. "useful idiots".

"I know you best,
better than one might think.
I know you better than I know myself.
It's time for you
to make a sacrifice.
It's time to die a little.
Give it up."

ego death. give up your ego; it just makes you more predictable.

"You are a part of me."

a summary of the song. we are all parts of each other. we all have the same human experience. we all have similar tastes. we all have similar emotions. we all came from the same origin (not individual parents, but ancient ancestors).. to learn about oneself you must observe the reflection of yourself inside other people.

Well, that was one hell of an interpretation for this song. You have a unique perspective, and i love it. Keep on.

thanks. i was actually sort of surprised that no one else had this interpretation, but thats why i love this band; because of the vagueness.

True! maynard talked about reflections in a interview

he said something like
go off about the person you hate
find out what it is that you hate about that person
then turn the you into me
and you can come up with some interesting things.

i think the things we hate in people
are what we have to change in ourselves
maybe its our subconscious showing us
what needs to change in ourselves

or else it wouldnt bother us

some people are bothered by people that
other people arent bothered by

look at the entities as a reflection of your inner self

The flaws we are able to quickly recognize in others are identified because we know them in ourselves first.
