Setlist is correct as listed. Lateralus was def. an extended version with the drum off!! , "do something so much that you just forget the lyrics" Adam's birthday... sorry to interrupt the show to announce your birthday", packers suck! Lets go BIG BLUE!! 4th time seeing them and it was awesome. 2nd best show I've seen. "Think 70 plus sperm". Til next time we see you...

Two things to remember- 70, sperm

The performance-

MJK had somewhat of an off night. Forgetting an entire verse of lyrics to Schism and botching a handful of other parts throughout, including some in Lateralus and Aenema. That's fine but the mistakes were a bit uncharacteristic for him. He's probably still thinking about Puscifer at the moment.

And I really think he is paying a price on those old vocal chords by tackling Hooker and Ticks in a set like this. He was very careful with his range.

MJK musings aside- HOLY SHIT! The energy of the band was something to behold! Was it loose and a bit sloppy at times? Yes. But the set list was great. Danny and Justin came prepared as always and Adam was a rock. And props to MJK for really leaning into the vocals on Hooker. I probably could have walked out right after it was done and been happy forever.

Sound was just ok. I had a new set of earplugs I was trying out so that's on me. But in general I felt like I was missing some of Justin's bass and that lower range of notes (except for Danny's thundering bass kick- that came through just fine!)

Highlights visually were Forty-six&2 and Intension. (great job as always Junior)

Highlights musically outside of Hooker were Forty-six&2 and Intension. Funny how that works!

And while Aenema was not the tightest I've seen it, great energy on that one. The crowd ate it up.

Mandalay Bay/The venue-

Decent enough sound for such a big place and no problems getting in. Whoever thinks I am gonna pay $7 for a 12 oz bottle of beer here though must have been out their minds!

Misc-

Picked up a signed poster. Waited over 2 hours to do it. But I gotta say, it's a nice poster and looking forward to framing it and adding it to my very modest collection.

Ran into a board buddy later inside and had a good chat but other than that, flew mostly solo.

A great show overall!

Next up- Tuscan!

I was in Floor 1, Row Q

Fuckin amazing. very heavy powerful setlist. it was all go full throttle through most of the set.

buzz did take over adam's guitar during the lateralus drum-off. Not sure who was playing drums....or who the big dude that rambled into maynards mic. None of it was understandable.

I picked up a signed tour poster ($120). Second one to my collection (previous was the planet hollywood show in 2010)

And about the $7 beers....thats typical on the strip, not just to this venue.

maynard did botch a part on lateralus (walked over to dannys kit to laugh about it right after).....and a whole verse of schism ....but i am kinda satisfied it happened in a good way. Shows they are human and somewhat give a shit - glad he didnt wing it or just act like it never happened. The fact he pointed it out at the end of the song was warming.

Maynard did scream and belt out some serious notes where hes avoided it in the past.....BUT i did hear a few notes crack. Again, i dont mind. i'd rather them keep it real than to find out he is using pre-recorded backup tracks.

How balanced was the mix at this one? It sounded on video and was reported to be excellent in Reno, i.e., Maynard was turned way up and the bass didn't overwhelm, compared to the last couple tours.

I drove out to vegas for this one. Hooker and Jambi sounded really good. Maynard said a few words during the first and second verse of stinkfist but I couldnt hear what it was he said. I'm glad they played ticks and leeches and pushit which were both great.
The band played a whole different jam before schism. I think it was more than just an intro to schism. Maynard forgot the lyrics for the second verse. Schism also had an extended interlude. Intension and 46and2 were also great. Lateralus featured buzz and dale from the melvins. Adam bowed down in a prayer position towards buzz when buzz first hit the stage. After lateralus the band went off stage, but eventually returned to close with the pot and aenema. A few mistakes here and there, but overall they sounded tight. This was the second time I've seen them and this one was a far superior show. The mix was really good. I think maynard should step up his game. I saw him with apc last year and his vocals were flawless then. His vocals on Tool should be just as flawless.

Ya I think the long jam before schism is obviously the beginnings of a new song. Probably the first 1/3 of a much longer song, something they've been jamming on but mjk hasn't written words yet.

I think mjk was in rare form! He screamed a whole lot and was very talkative and funny. Sure he flubbed up a bit but he acknowledged it and joked about it, it was cool. But it was clear they were all having a great time celebrating adam's birthday in Vegas. I can't even imagine their after party.

Not much else that I can say that hasn't been said! I was sitting right behind Junior and Blair was standing next to me the entire time. During their intermission he looked at me, nodded his head, and then threw his arms out and said WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?! I laughed and later thanked him for rushing the posters to Vegas lol

The set list was an awesome treat. I've only been to 4 of their shows and this is my 2nd on the fav list, yes because of Hooker and finally getting to hear Ticks and Leeches live. Glad to have caught them early on in the tour and still fresh. Not sure how long the old man's vocal cords are going to hold up but he brought it as well as he could.

I ran into Buzz and Dale in the elevator before the sound check and didn't know they played in Reno. I thought they were just in town to celebrate Adam's birthday. It was cool to see them pop on stage to add to the jam. I still have no clue who the guy in the suit was nor what the hell he said. I was pretty euphoric for the next few hours afterwards and enjoyed the random roar of the fans as we all filtered and back through the casino.

Can anyone confirm for me MJK's lyrics on Hooker. I think I heard him say Volto T instead of Beastie T. If I can confirm this my head will explode, I was 3rd row center with my Volto shirt on! If anyone could help me out it would be much much appreciated.

This was my 6th show, aside from MJK's hiccups it was the best show I've seen since '96 at Roseland NYC. I missed Pushit by one night on that tour but got to hear Eulogy instead. I went thru life accepting I would never hear Pushit. My favorite song. Dream come true.

I think the posters suck, I'm not hating the artist, its just not Tool-ish. The ones from the 2009 tour were much better. IMO

Met Justin after the show having drinks at the Eye Candy bar in MB. He was so nice and took some pics with me and my friends. Best night ever!

I am glad TooL (or their management) have finally decided to take advantage of larger arenas in Vegas. I had grown weary of cramming into the Pearl or the (old) Joint. Getting in and out of the Aladdin theater at Planet Hollywood was a joke at best, criminal debacle at worst. I am hopeful on future tours they will come back here to the larger arena at Mandalay, because the place was completely sold out. Big crowds equals big paydays. On to the show ...

I was in Floor 9 Row A right next to the soundboard. Any song in which Maynard used the mic'd megaphone was unintelligible or just plain couldn't be heard. So starting off the show with Hooker With A Penis with virtually no heard lyrics was a bummer. Maynard was somewhat chatty ... made fun of himself for forgetting lyrics in Schism, comparing himself to the Green Bay Packers in that he had done something so many times that it became rote and eventually he forgot how to do it, and before you know it, you are lost. When he was on the standard mic, it was a good performance by Maynard, he really tried to hit the notes unlike their last show in Vegas. The drum off in Lateralus was excellent, yet it was last time they were here too. The show had a too-familiar feel to it ... almost like a greatest hits tour insofaras it felt no different than the last 2 times they came through town. Similar setlist, same stage setup, same video. Hopefully, this hastily assembled mini-tour was not just a moneygrab ... but a goodbye to the old before they come out with new stuff to blow us away all over again. Tool is one of the few artists I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt. If it was the first time you had seen them, it would have been a fantastic show to you I am sure. As painful as it is for me to write ... for me it was just "meh". Maybe I am just getting too old and cranky. After all, 10,000 days in the fire is long enough ...

That pretty much sums up the way I felt about it. The excellent moments did not overpower the not so excellent ones.

But if this was your first show or second show it would be a mind blower.

One thing that my friends said "Tool has reached a sort of plateau."

My first Tool show....I was blown away! Yea he messed up a few times but the crowd was singing so loud it didn't matter. Opening with Hooker was awesome, set the tone for the rest of the show in my opinion. I'm hoping for some Cali dates so I can see them again. The Lateralus drum solo-off was amazing.

I was not blown away by this performance, as is my normal feeling of most Tool shows. Even though they played my favorite, Pushit, I felt incredibly detached and not at all amused. I agree with the previous reviewers that if this wasn't your billionth show, you probably ate it up. Before the show, I kept having a recurring dream that I somehow missed the show. Now I know why. I did not need to go. If they ever release a new album and NEW tour again, I will happily attend. The Greatest Hits Tour is getting old, boys. And when they try to do one of these cash grab shows again, please do not buy the tickets. They play the same shit again because it’s easy. They give the bare minimum and charge top dollar. We’re supposed to cream our jeans because they played 3 different songs?! I know they are aware that their rabid, repeat attending fans make these tours a success and yet they slap us in the face with their old limp dicks and jizz out the same tired ass shenanigans.

Mandalay Bay is crap. The sound is shit, the seats are too close together and air circulation does not exist. Fuck ticketmaster for seating me between two couples. There was no room for me to rock out, had Tool incited the feeling for me at this show. Security was really lax. Why do you people still feel the need to repeatedly take horrible cell photos? Fucking be present in the moment, assholes.

Having said all that, I am still the biggest, most ridiculous Tool fan. I am just a slow learner, apparently. I will see you all on the next album’s tour.

In terms of MJK's vocals I agree that anything on the mega was hard to discern. Overall the quality power of his vocals was usually drowned out by the rest of the band and tended to go from muddy to almost right more than I'd liked.

Seeing only 4 live shows I haven't reached that level of disenchanted mostly because I didn't wear out their live shows like many have before me. It's still somewhat fresh. And yes I agree that tossing in 3 'rare' songs doesn't a tour make. I like to think that this was a money-grab more for funds to put towards finishing the next album but heck, maybe it was just to fund all their non-band related wants.

In terms of the venue, I've enjoyed their shows in those not in an arena or outdoors for obvious reasons.

Security sucked only if you were accessible and trying to do what you shouldn't have been doing like reefing out or taking pics. I had folks all around me doing both and we were right off a main aisle so there was constant harping by the staff. I had toyed with bringing my little HD cam in but after seeing the metal detectors I said fuck it/don't want to fuck with it and was more than happy to rock out to the sound and visuals without wondering if I was going to get accosted by event staff.

As much as I'd love to catch another show on this tour I'm more than happy and placated until they finish off the next album.

Agree with these opinions the most! Spot on. I was in 109 row b. pretty horrible seats. I thought that the sound quality was so bad because of where I was. Mjk was as some have said, pretty bad really. This was only my 3rd show. I'd rank it 2nd behind hawaii and in front of anchorage. Now... I got pretty wasted and was really amped for the show. The folks around me were neither. After I couldn't really hear vocals and the music was a fairly garbled mess I just screamed out the lyrics I remembered (about as many as Mjk) and as you said rocked out. I was not appreciated. Oh well.

Agree with these opinions the most! Spot on. I was in 109 row b. pretty horrible seats. I thought that the sound quality was so bad because of where I was. WOW some people have COMPLETELY different experiences!!!

this was my 28th show, I've seen every tour since '98, and it was easily the best one yet, a title previously held by red rocks '10 and the king crimson shows in '01

EASILY the best setlist I've ever seen since '01/'02, exactly half of the set was new to the setlist, which is pretty unheard of. hooker AND ticks AND pushit AND the pot AND the new bit that didn't have lyrics yet?!?!?!?!?!?!?

and the familiar songs like stinkfist, 46&2, and lateralus were superbly done. unexpected they played the album version of stinkfist and not the usual extended version. and certainly one of the best versions of lateralus ever, with buzz and dave. some of you are probably too new to remember all the shows in 96-02 where buzz jammed with the guys, he's always been a welcome addition to tool, and going by the face melting solo he played on sunday, this time was no different.

i thought the venue sounded great, I've been there before and i think it has great sound for an arena.

the visuals were better than they've ever been, they had elements of the 2010 set up, but more and bigger screens, and some new videos.

most of all everyone seemed like they were in great spirits, and happy to be performing. maynard sounded great and was really going for notes that i expected him to back off on, like the end of pushit.

seriously if you were disappointed than i can't imagine what you were expecting in the first place. i expected the same 2010 set with one or two replacements. O M G!!!!!! it was as if they said "lets play the stuff no one expects us to play, change it up for em". it was sooooooooooooo worth it, i wish i could see it again this tour, I'm jealous of you texans!!

and regarding the theory that if you've seen them a lot, it gets stale?? wow, news to me! I've got a collection of hundreds of live shows, and personally I've seen them 28 times as of last sunday, and i wish i could see the show again tomorrow!!
the reason I'm so obsessed with they're live show is because it produces an ecclesiastic high, a moment of uncontrollable emotional ecstasy that you can't replicate in any kind of church. its a psychedelic experience that needs no substances. its not always there...the gorge '06 and the '09 tour was kind of lackluster. but since '10 its been truly stellar. if there was a band that puts on a better live show, i'd like to know...

so glad they decided to do this tour before the new album, cause we're likely to never see many of those songs on the set ever again.

also interesting that people are accusing them of a cash grab lol I'm sure they knew this and why they're choosing to open with hooker with a penis hahahahaha the song takes on a whole new meaning now ;)

the lowlights....

the merch booth. could there not have been ONE new shirt and not old ones with new dates slapped on em? and was disappointed in the poster at first but now i really wish i'd bought one this time, just really wanted another AJ art. also $45?? really?!?! they were still $35 in '10.

schism. the slow part in the show. it needs to go, make way for H, the grudge, eulogy, something?!

the highlights?

Oh god way to many to mention!

p.s. how amazing is it that one can be smoking copious amounts of weed in their hotel room and 5 minutes later be sitting in their seats waiting for tool to take the stage any minute??? gotta love vegas ;)

Agreed. Experiences do differ! After reading reviews, I figured that my seat did not change the sound experience... but then there is this one. Be happy you had a good spot. I know what you mean about the high. Experiences seem to hinge not only upon the band, but who is around you. You have the merch right... Fuck that.

Have to say... any time that a performer of MJKs caliber forgets lyrics/can't sing/thinks it's funny is a slap in the face. Douche move. At least he faced the crowd... all be it in silhouette.

I was definitely euphoric after the show, there's no doubt. Walked out two feet off the ground, nearly deaf with a big grin on my face.

The merch was meh. I was hoping for some tour/location specific goods that I'd wear and the one Vegas shirt was only in womens which didn't compliment my...girthsome gut.

I was on the 10th floor in the Mandalay and could smell the reek of weed in the hallway just outside my room. I figured it had to be someone going to the show and wanted so badly to smoke but I'm almost 2 months without and had to be good. Not that I didn't ensure that I'd downed half a bottle of vodka and mixer before the show to compensate, though ;o)

I know what happened. I took Sativa (4 hrs after other edibles) after 10 months of doing NOTHING. It put my ass in a nasty state of mind. I can't clearly remember parts of the show that others have been able to recall so eloquently. I wanted so bad for the euphoric escapism, but my own head bullshit prevented me from being dialed in with you all. In retrospect, the set list looks great but I can't clearly recall the performances....deen a doog toob.

And at what point did they do that jam?? I recall the jam session segment. Does anyone remember the composition???

Made it to the venue around 7ish, after blazing it pre-show with fellow fans at a room in the Mandalay Bay. Went in, got to our seats and were stoked at what amazing seats we had (107 row F). There really was not a bad seat in this place. Intronaut was pretty good.. Best opening band I've seen for Tool yet. Getting super stoked at this point.

When the guys came on and opened with HWAP, I about had to pick my mans jaw up off the floor and wipe the drool. He looked like a little girl at Christmas who gets the pony she wanted. (Interesting analogy, I know.) I was shaking from excitement at how hard they were rocking HWAP.

Ticks and Leeches... HOLY SHIT. No more can be said about that one.

When they played Pushit.... OMG. IMO, the way they played it blew the Salival version out of the ballpark.. wait, out of the universe. Maybe it's because it's our first time seeing it live. I cried actually... Also did during Intension and Schism. Not like bawling, but teary for sure. So fucking beautiful and deep. Lateralus and Aenima were mind blowing, especially with the visuals. That canopy of lasers during the "I'm praying for rain" part in Aeinma. Wow. We were under that and I swear the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I was in such awe, I couldn't even sing along. I think I was having a Toolgasm at that moment.

For being 50 years old, these guys rock out WAY harder than most rock bands with members in their 20's today. They definitely were making a statement with this show. I don't care that Maynard flubbed words during many of the songs.. they were better than ever and the best I've ever seen them.

I'm glad they are busting out the old shit they haven't touched in years for us. We may never hear some of what we're hearing this tour again. Hands down, best Tool show I've seen.

Maynard was not at the top of his game (had trouble sustaining some high notes, or opted for lower notes), but the band was, as usual, high energy and spot on. There really is no such thing as a bad Tool show. The set list was a little short, and didn't include anything from Opiate (Jerk Off!) or Undertow (Flood!), but I'm not complaining. These guys always give you your money's worth. I just hope Maynard's a little out of practice with the high registers and not at the middle-age point of no return.

the new jam was right before schism, and after listening to it a few more times, I'm pretty sure its not just some throwaway jam but part of something larger that will see the light of day on the new album...

him forgetting the words and then joking about it afterwords was funny i think, after always being expected to be perfect, he's human after all lol things like that can happen during anyones live performance, but also solidified the fact that it should be dropped from the setlist, he's tired of singing it, his mind clearly wanders lol

as for high registers, he REALLY went for the end of pushit, it was spot on like the album, and i just read that last night they dusted off another lateralus era song that used to challenge his high register...

Let us not fail to memorialize Maynard's most insightful introduction of the night: "This is a song about fisting."

Ahh yes, one of the finer Maynardisms I've had the pleasure of hearing live.

This was my 17th show and as a huge TOOL fan, I was extremely impressed with the 'new' setlist. Let's face it, if you've been going to their shows, we all know the standard 10/11 song rotation. So, any deviation from that is a welcome surprise. My friend and I were talking before the show (as neither of us had looked at the Reno setlist) about possible openers and if there would be any new or cover material. We discussed the likely suspects for opener (Stinkfist, 3rd Eye, Jambi), so when Hooker let loose, it took me a minute before I recognized that familiar jam. Blown away, first time seeing that song live and its always been one of my favs. Ticks & Leeches, Pushit, Intension are all very seldom heard songs (especially T&L), so getting those songs folded into the setlist, was almost like hearing new songs...almost for the first time. Someone else posted that we got 5 songs that aren't in the standard rotation, so if I can keep going to TOOL shows for 5 different songs, I'll never stop. They have so many amazing songs in their repertoire that they could tour for the next 15 years just playing 5 new songs from their catalog. Anyway, we had great seats, right in front of the soundboard and I thought the show was fantastic - would've loved to see some new visuals, but can't complain about that. Funny story - as my friend and I discussed songs we'd love to hear - Parabol/Parabola and Sober were two that I brought up as songs I'd love to see/hear again. Sure as sh*t, they busted them both out in Dallas night 1. Spiral Out to that!!! Here's hoping for an LA run before Puscifer goes back on tour!

While I did remark that the show had a too-familiar feel to it ... you guys have made an interesting point that we may never see some of these songs again. In that light, I am grateful for the experience ... but I am ready for the new material. I would rather Tool push the envelope, watch it bend than fade to the greatest hits rotation. But then again ... that is just me and who am I to ask or judge? Days away I still feel them touching me, changing me and considerately killing me.

Concrete answers are a hard commodity to come by in the world of Tool, although their enigmatic existence in the musical realm is probably the reason so many people love them. I sure do!!!
CANNOT wait to get a sample of what they are working on.
