Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

dedicated to the fucko behind me that spilled his whiskey and coke on me and then passed out for 2/3 of the show
maynard: "Hello Small Apples"
and "we just released a new record, it's called ten thousand reasons to play minneapolis"
and something about how the tickets we had contained LSD.

Mind Numbingly good show, Maynard sported a Mohawk until Jambi where he threw on a cowboy hat. Adam was (imo) flawless, Danny impressed every girls in the venues pants off, and Justin rocked the bass so hard my ears don't work anymore. While toned down, I think I dig the visuals for this show more so than in previous tours. Very in sync with the songs. I think I might have shit my pants somewhere near the end of Lateralus. In a smoke free city such as Minneapolis it was very pleasant to smell so much herb in the air. If I wasn't in such a trance when I left, I would have remembered to buy a poster (they're huge!)

Off to drink, and let the show sink in

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

What a fucking show, as usual. Same set list as previous shows. The new songs kicked ass live. Thought all the AEnema tunes were the tightest. LOUD! FUCKING LOUD!!! We were right in front of Justin and it was LOUD! As it should be. There was a pretty big sound glitch at the end of the show. They were jamming the end of AEnema and all the sound went out. You could here Adam a little, but they were all still banging the hell out of their instruments and nothing was coming out. Until the last two banging notes, the sound came back on???? Someone hit a switch at the sound booth about 30 seconds early!? Anyway, Great fucking show. Thanks TOOL!!! See you again this fall! Sprial out@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

Amazing show. I was lucky to be able to attend.

Justin was insane.
Danny was amazing, as always.
Adam was great.
Maynard was jovial.

It really looked like they were having wonderful time up there, which just puts a huge grin on my face as I sit here and type this. =] It was fun to see Maynard as well as we could tonight, his dancing [if you could call it that] was just so much fun to watch.

We got last minute tickets, miraculously via Ticketmaster [persistance]. I was more than a little concerned when I read the fine print and the tickets read "Warning. Obstructed/Limited View." When we were making our way to our seats, my jaw dropped, they turned out to be these amazing box seats just off of stage left. We were literally within 15 feet of Justin and the front of the stage. Only bad part about those seats was that the sound seemed a bit distorted, but wow did it kick ass anyways. [if anyone can please let me know what Maynard was saying when he was talking to the crowd, I'd appreciate it!]

End of the show gave me the goosebumps. Both Danny and Justin came over to our side of the stage and just looked up at us and smiled and waved. What a wonderful feeling, to make eye contact with someone whom you feel like you've connected with a long time ago. I know I'm just a face in the crowd of thousands, but it really felt like they appreciated me being there.

The new material sounded flawless live. To be perfectly honest, I had grown a bit tired of Vicarious. Then I heard it again tonight, live, and it was AMAZING. Jambi is becoming one of my new Tool favorites. The Pot was fun as hell and LK/Rosetta Stoned absolutely shook the place apart.

Lateralus was played to perfection. It literally brought a tear to my eye. I really couldn't believe what I was watching/hearing/experiencing.

The Historic Orpheum in downtown Minneapolis was just about the best place I could imagine seeing my favorite band play. Everything is really built upwards, so there really doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house.

I'm rambling now and beyond coherence. I can't wait to read what all of you other attendees thought about the show.

This was my 4th, but 1st in a small venue. I abso-fucking-lutely LOVED every second of it. I'm sad it is all over, it went by soooo fast.

Just returned from the show and My ears are still ringing! What a show! We had front row balcony seats and couldn't have had a better view! All I can say is that they ROCKED! Great performance and well worth the price for the tickets that You couldn't get through Ticketmaster! New material was great but You still can't beat the older tunes.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

Just got home... front row center balcony. Un-fucking-believable.

Oh yeah, and did Maynard start too early on The Pot? Seemed like an abnormally long pause before he finished the first line.

Maynard dedicated the last song (Aenima) to "Carmen" who is "-2 months old."

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

Well, I just want to say, I was one of those who at first totally disliked the new album, and after seeing the songs performed live along side older songs, I have gained a new respect for 10,000 days. The songs were really powerful, albeit not as uniformly groovy as the older songs they played. I can't remember the entire setlist, but they opened with rosetta stoned, then went into stinkfist, and they played these songs in no real order throughout the night:

schism, sober, aenima, lateralus, the pot, vicarious, jambi, the patient.

The show was pretty short, only around 1 hour and 45 minutes or so, which was dissapointing for everyone there. Maynard made some comments about Minneapolis and about why they started the tour there, but I couldn't understand hardly a damn word he said. That leads me to my only quarrel with the night:

THE SOUND WAS FUCKING HORRENDOUS. The band's performance was pretty good considering they hadn't played together for so long before coachella, and i've seen videos of them playing the songs much worse. BUT THE SOUND!!! Danny's hi-hat took center stage, as it was the loudest, crispest most high end laden instrument on stage. It overpowered at times both the guitar, maynard's voice and the rest of danny's drums. In fact I'd have to say that all of his cymbals had way too much high end on them, not enough mid. As for the kick/bass interplay, it was equally bad. The entire theater echoed a muddy low end that was grossly indistinguishable as music. The bass was both muddy and resonant in the low frequencies, and also had too much high end on it.

The only thing the sound person (people?) got right was adam's guitar. It sounded decent. Maynard's vocals were also an extreme dissapointment, as there seemed to be no compression on them whatsoever. Sometimes the quiet parts were way too quiet, then you could tell they adjusted the volume, and then he'd scream and it was way too loud, so they'd turn it down... READ A DAMN FUCKIN BOOK ABOUT HOW TO MIX A LIVE BAND OR STOP SHOOTING FUCKING HEROIN BEFORE DOING IT!!! I mean seriously, a decent compressor/de-esser would have worked WONDERS out there tonight.

Also, I don't know what the F happened but at the end of aenima something happened to the entire board mix and it was all cut out, so all you could hear was the guitar and bass. (because of their amps) danny could have been playing air drums for all the audience knew at that point. Luckily they stuck it out like professionals... (unlike some certain SOUND PEOPLE I CAN THINK OF!!)

Some of you might think that I'm just bashing some dudes that probably have it really bad or something, like they're doin g their best... bullshit. I have a decent amount of live sound experience and I can tell you that many sound guys I know whould have done much better not knowing the gear, the theater or the band they were mixing for.

In the end, it only dissapoints me so much because the band and their performance was so good. Even with the terrible mix job, I'd have to say the show FUCKING ROCKED!!

I flew in to the Mini-Apple from Hilo, Hawaii just to see this show and I'd have to say it was well worth it. The songs rocked my ass off and it was wonderful to be amongst fellow fans.

Keep up the good work guys! (you know who I mean... :-| )

I think he said. The money from your tickets is going to buy me LSD and you all will have a present of Coke in your cars.

This was my first Tool concert. I drove six hours each way and just got home now at 5 AM. It was definately worth it.

This was my first time seeing tool.

I was near the left front/middle of the balcony.

Molassy summed it up nicely here:

How has noone else mentioned this? This "echoing muddy low end" was drowning out alot of the music.

Fans (like me) spent a minimum of $60-70 a ticket for this show...and they can't get the fucking sound right?

Agreed, it still effing rocked.

Honestly though... I'm not sure if I am going to see them again.

Of course I'll still pick up all their albums, etc because I LOVE their music, but I don't think I'll be buying another ticket to a live show. Although the band's performance rocked, this is inexcusable in my mind... and for my money.

I'll admit I've never seen a huge rock band in a small club like this, so maybe that's just how it is going to sound. ...I'd like to hear some opinions from either more sound people, or people that have seen tool a number of times in the past.

I think it was something like:

The tickets have been dosed with LSD, so those of you who thought to lick your ticket had an especially good time.

Then I think he said something about extraterrestrials escorting us to our cars.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

First Tool concert for me. Luckily I live in Minneapolis so no huge drive. I hate to post this, but I was somewhat disappointed in the show. Musically they were great. Performance wise not so good. I mean, DO SOMETHING on stage would you? I guess I just enjoy musicians who actually do more than just stand in one place for 2 hours and play. Bounce around. Move to the center of the stage. Anything. And I just don't understand the same setlist from night to night. No surprises for me was a letdown. Godda say they did rock. And seeing the boys playing in such a small venue was very cool.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

I'd definitely agree on the sound aspect, except that only the vocals mildly bothered me. From the begining of Rosetta Stoned, they weren't very loud. Luckily I sang along in my head, and I just knew what he was saying, but to anyone who wasn't a total fan, you may have been even more let down.

They sorta worked it out later on, or it could be just his walkie talkie thing he was talking into, but the vocals seemed a bit more solid. Also could of been just he was singing louder, as the quiet parts of songs, ala The Patient, were still soft.

I think it was partially because I was in the front row, and the speakers seemed just out of our range. -shrug- Probably about as good of a sound quality you'd get if they played at the XCel, since it's so much bigger.

That aside, I'm not a sound tech/instrumental guy in any way, so to me, the rest of the band sounded fine. I was too into the show to notice anything of that nature anyhow.

The show itself was awesome. Not too much chatter, just song after song, which was good in it's own way. I didn't keep track of time, but if it WAS an hour and fourty five minutes, how is that in any way short ?... Geez.

As far as Tool not moving around.. that's just how they are really. The setlist I could see maybe doing a few alterations for, but I'm sure most fans didn't browse online every day to see what songs they were playing, and just went to the show. :P I'd imagine after not playing for years, you're probably still tryin to get the new songs down pat, and probably don't want to throw too much into the mix, so early on. With the following full US tour, I'm sure they'll mix it up here and there. Who knows.

That all aside, I loved the show. Being in the front row was just crazy, it felt like I was seeing them in some small ass club, and no one was trying to mash me into the security bar. When they do come back, I'll be sad to have to be sitting probably in the middle of no where at the Xcel :P

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

I am glad others have mentioned the poor audio mix, I did not want to be the only one!

This was my 4th Tool show and overall I had a blast and was very impressed. Being able to watch Danny all night at such a close distance made the overpriced ticket well worth the money. I agree with others that the new songs sound incredible live. The only issues I had with the evening were as follows:

1. Ticket price/concert length : For what was considered warm up shows to "blow the dust off" as Maynard said, the ticket price was too high in my opinion. Also, they played for approximately an hour and a half, which is at least how long they usually play WITH an opening act on their full blown tours. I just think that for the price and no opening act, they could have played more songs.

2. I know that during concerts, for the most part, Maynard does not say much and chooses to do his own thing and that is how he and the other guys have always been. Would it be so hard or uncool if he were to talk more to get the crowd fired up or come off his riser and sing down close by the stage? I honestly got the impression at the end that he just wanted to get the hell out of there. Maybe he was pissed off about the PA cutting out on the last song...I dont know. Maybe I am being selfish in wanting them to be more appreciative of their fans.

Anyway, other than those things, I had a great time and thought it was fun to see them in a small venue. I will definitely see them again this fall.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

Sound was atrocious.. video screen visualizations looked like something I could throw together on my computer. Sans "Vicarious," the new material doesn't really hold up live. Maynard is really starting to show his age, adjusting notes to fit more within his current capabilities (aka the "I must keep reminding myself of this" leading up to the harmonized chorus on "The Patient" that he used to push on previous tours)

It was kind of a waste of $70 to see something so uninspired and called-in.

However, Danny owned.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

This was my first Tool show and I was just blown away. I drove 7 hours from Chicago to go see them and it was well worth the drive. Jambi, Lateralus, The Patient, and Aenima were amazing. There were two guys behind me though who sang every single word to every single song at the top of their lungs and half the time I could only hear them. Regardless of that I still had an amazing time.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

TOOL is one of my favorite bands, 70 bucks is a lot to pay for a short set, but the closeness that a small venue provides, and the fact that Maynard dressed in normal clothing made it all worth it. Not to mention the fact that I think I was 2 seconds away from climaxing during Lateralus. Goodness! I fucking love TOOL, so I felt priveleged to be one of the few to get a ticket at all-and I'm not gunna lie, I was fully prepared to spend $200 to see TOOL live. I loved the new material, though I wished they played "Right in Two"- That's my favorite on 10,000 Days. The Pot rocked, I had that song in my head all day and was hoping they played it. The music cutting out on Anema was a terrible way to end a show with gusto, but what can you do. This was my first TOOL show, and I wasn't nessecarily blown away, because I have already developed such an intimate connection with the music, and this just added to my experience of it. But overall, it's TOOL! What amazing, thought provoking, intelligent music-and I feel lucky to have joined them on their club tour!

I had a fucking great time! My only dissapointment was "The Pot". It just didn't seem to have the same conviction it does on CD. Whatever, Jambi made up for it. Adam fucking rocked the talk box solo. Everything else was pretty amazing as well, except for the sound cutting out during Aenima.

Oh, Minneapolis is way too expensive. I spent a shit ton of money last night between the bars, food, hotel, and my $35 shirt. What can ya do?

Also I wasn't dissapointed at all and I paid 150.00 for my ticket. Just seeing them play Laterlus was enough for me. Anemia and Vicarious also kicked ass.

Did anyone else notice that Maynard messed up on Jambi? I think he sang "prayed like a father all night long (Paused) begged like a hooker all night long"

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

Saw the show from balcony 7 with great view and outstanding vibe among mostly hardcore fans aged 15 to 45.
Feeling throughout was how fucking lucky am I to see favorite band that rocks this hard with also artistry, vision, expressing dark thoughts we all have within us, complete mastery of instruments - and in small venue without rotten stadium rock yuppies and their girlfriends jumping up and down to the two songs they've actually heard before then sitting down glumly for the "new stuff" or pissing off before the traffic rush ...........
Thought the performance was tight, great synchronized energy from the four, best sensation when internal organs vibrating from guitar and drum crescendos – new tracks passed the test here with flying colors.
Didn't really care about the videos - seen the good ones before and they felt too retrospective - just prefer to see and hear mindnumbingly good band. Set choice was, apparently, predictable but actually inspired combination for nearly 2 hours of out-of-body mental orgasm that seemed over too soon because of perfection that probably shouldn’t be fucked with. No greatest hits medely, cover versions, doodling innovations, time-wasting rants or “all the people on the right say YEAH” bullshit is fine by me.
Agree with several (honest) fans that soundcrew or whoever couldn't get the vocals right especially at the start - maybe this was the best the venue could offer TOOL - after all it's a big beast in a small cage.
Didn't appreciate Maynard’s "let's get the fuck out of here" head toss at the end - maybe pissed off at Aenema sound snafu or whatever and not intended as disrespect – still preferred genuine warmth from other three who obviously enjoyed the show and appreciated non-stop adoration from psyched audience.
Altogether once-in-a-lifetime experience (for me anyway) and well worth crazy internet price I paid after washing out on evil Ticket-fucking-Master.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

I agree 100% about people whining too much..FUCK! Were we at the same show? This was my 4th Tool show and I was thoroughly impressed. Granted this was not the best performance I've seen by them ... but it was easily the best performance I've seen SINCE the last time I saw Tool. I can understand how people would build up huge expectations in their mind, but let it go...nobody is perfect and Tool is closer than any other act I've seen. Enough of the negativity though. This show kicked ass!!! Best moment for me was Maynards scream on Rosetta Stoned. SO GOOD. There didn't seem to be a bad seat in the house, I was front row on the balcony which made for an amazing view of Danny, who I watched for the majority of the time...incredible. I was kind of suprised at how subdued the people around me were, I was flailing my body like a lunatic for a good part of the show, and during lateralus I could feel the power of Tool chanelling through my entire being. Quite an experience. I thought the new material sounded great (Jambi was my favorite) but I agree with whoever said the Aenema songs sounded the tightest...particularly stinkfist. Kind of dissapointed they didn't do the extended version because I love how they play the sample from the intro just before the "I'll Keep..." section. That has always been my favorite part of seeing that song live, but you can't have everything I guess. All in all it was well worth the $85 I spent on the ticket. I'll still in a state of disbelief, and I feel extremely lucky to have the chance to see them in such an intimate venue. Can't wait for the tour in the fall.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

hey, i agree with FUCK, give them a break, the show was amazing, i paid 250.00 for my tic and would have paid more, tool is amazing, i totally agree with the guy about seeing godsmack, if u want to see some mind dumbing, lets all get wasted and see sully dance around, go to that concert, your probably one of the people who drank way too much anyway, and also have never listened to tool or now anything more about them than whats on the radio, too bad for you. the band was tight for being off for 5 years, i cant wait to see more this fall. did anyone else notice maynard messed up stinkfist, he sang "this may hurt a lille but its something you'll get used to" twice, first when he was supposed to, and in the last verse instead of "show me that you love me and that we belong together". oh well, maynard is not GOD, just as close as you can come. AWESOME, BEAUTIFUL experience, i feel sorry for the few drunk people passed out in the bathroom, what a waste. later

HORRIBLE FUCKING SOUND.

That theater sucks.

Performance was decent. Nothing great. These other kids were probably high and just thought it was amazing because it was Tool.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

Ah yes....

Even when I was writing my original post I thought "since I am complaining about some things concerning the concert, I wonder how long it will take before someone jumps all over my post and says something about how I am a whiner, complain too much, and of course the default heavy metal fan comback"why dont you go listen to Godsmack, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park etc blah blah blah."

The positives of the concert completely outweighed the negatives. My comments are in line with what others have already posted concerning the MPLS show as well as previous stops on this tour. Doesnt Tool preach "think for yourself"? Then why is it when others as well as myself say something bad about the experience, we are not true fans or complainers?

Anyway, I had a great time overall and will definately go to see them when they come back in the fall. I hope Godsmack is the opening band.......

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

Oddly enough, at first, I thought the end of aenima was intentional, as it just kicked back in with the final beat. It seemed cool in my head :P

As far as the sound, it wasn't perfect, but it was far from horrible. Come back when they play the XCel, and you get to listen from halfway across the building. My only real complaint was that being at the very front, the range of speakers didnt seem to pass over us at all.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

wasn't trying to step on anyone's toes for having an opinion. I just don't think there is a single other band that could've performed that well and had people walk away at all disspointed. I guess it's a testament to how great they are, I just don't see a need in picking at every detail of a performance. I like how people's opinions are also not valid if they were high at the concert, great logic. Fuckstick. I was blazed, it was amazing, you suck at life...

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

Just seeing how much the band can reproduce live is worth it, because let's face it, most of us are predisposed to like it because we love the recordings. However, It wasn't spot on for maynard. but danny made me shit. They took all my lighters when I went in which was WAY worse than anything that went wrong with the show. I couldn't fill myself with nicotine afterward.

Re: 2006/05/12 - Minneapolis, MN - Orpheum Theatre

its crazy how some tool "fans" who managed to score tickets have such destorted views of reality. somehow I came in with the impression everyone in that building must be awesome just for being there. If you're going to bitch about the sound after that incredible experience you didnt deserve to be there. Not only would mixing such a huge band in a venue like that be damn near impossible, if you were focusing on the music as u should have been u would have seen past it. feel the vibrations tool is making for u.. right in front of u for u at that moment. the concert was incredible, just too short. and thautis, i was that douchebag smoking pot in front of you and u can suck my dick
