Re: RATED FIFTH BEST DRUM SOLO IN ROCK SONG
i can't wait until the world stops ranking and counting things. fuck, who gives a shit if it's 5th best, i love the song, having weighed and considered its qualities, and have decided to listen to it more often.
that's fucking it.
all this "i'm the number 1 ____ in the world.", "_____ is the number 1 _____ in the world." only perpetuates the divisions between living things. Danny Carrey can only be such an awesome drummer because of what has come before him. we can only ever build on what is. occasionally, we will find a system is no longer valid, so it didintegrates from society. see: horse and buggy.
so, before we go too far down this "5th best" road, how about we all give humanity a pat on the back for getting this far, sit down and d-d-d-do something with the new creations.
how about we do something like that?
I don't really go after people with dissimilar opinions per se; you'll notice I'm not attacking you for your opinion of Carey. I just tend to go after people who spout the pseudo-mystical bullshit, or have based their opinions on completely incorrect evidence, or just plain make asses of themselves.
It's somewhat of a hobby, if you will; I use my verbal skills here to keep my wits sharp so that they're always on point in real life.
Sharp as a ball I say, sharp as a ball

IMO there's much better material than ticks and leeches. While it is an amazing piece, I feel that Lateralus and 46&2 were much better because he could still show off his technical skill, but he could still balance it within the band and not put himself in the spotlight. But if we're going by pure technical skill then they should of mentioned the stinkfist add on he does.
Been a while since I visited this thread, but oh well.
For those wondering, the list came from Modern Drummer magazine. If you go to Danny's website, you'll find it under "media" along with all the other articles with him featured.
I totally agree that the list is bogus. I can think of at least 50 solos better than the ones on it (except for Bonham's Moby Dick). The fact remains that this list was indeed voted on by the subscribers of Modern Drummer. I'm sure the list would be substantially different if the vote was taken among a broader audience. I just thought that DC making the list was significant due to the limited numbers. Is it accurate? Hell, fuck no. At least 20 of the 50 that rank better (IMO) come from percussionists that play with symphonies and such.
However, I'm always willing to check out new material by any drummer in any genre of music.

I think I will pay more attention to my own ear and that of other professional musicians like well um Lenny White, John Bonham, Robert Fripp, Thomas Haake, etc etc etc.. all of which have stated on numerous occassions that Danny Carey is one the better drummers around at the moment.
But I digress and well as I said opinions are like assholes...
John Bonham said Danny Carey is one of the better drummers around? lol.
And those musicians have no idea what they're talking about.
And yes, this list is complete garbage filled with pop-rock wank.
I never said it wasn't.
As far as the 20 out of 50, that's just reference to drum solos in general. I wasn't referring to just rock. I've seen local drummers perform kick ass solos. I'll even toot my own horn and throw down a decent solo.
