I saw this no another forum and thought it was a cool idea..
It's not a "rate the guy above you" thread, it's a rating system where you rate a person based on what they post, it's called poster rep..
If you saw someone post something cool or interesting or argued their views very well in a discussion, or just from a witty response then you added to their rep and they got a higher rating, this system eliminates crap threads (except in the trash bin, where rep is not applicable) and crap responses..

It would only work like that if people actually cared about their user reps, which I doubt many people here would.

I think it could work.. If you limited how many points a person could give per day (or some limit like that) so that a single person couldn't just bombard someone with points..

Yeah, I suppose you may be right, but when people start arguing that they're better based on their rep then people will start caring.....and the war will be on..
How about a system where you rate both members and threads,
where the member rating is just your rating of who's opinion you
care about and how much, and the thread rating is based on the
ratings those members gave for a given thread?
Haven't they tried similar systems before? Didn't they all fail due to the lack of maturity?
Yup, which is why any rating system put in place should be a personal
one, not public. The ratings you give other members should only affect
what threads you see highlighted, rather than affect what everyone
sees highlighted. If you rate a thread and another member has given you
a high rating, then your rating of that thread will have a strong influence
on whether or not it gets highlighted for that member. In this system,
negative ratings for threads would work just fine because they have no
effect on what others see except for the members who trust the member
giving the negative rating.
