ahh, I see... so now pronunciation is irrelevant. Gotcha.
So let me get it straight, so when he sings something that doesn't match up with what he posted on the lyrics page... then the way he pronounces a particular word or phrase must be irrelevant because it's a "rock song." Yeah, that's it.
If I do know Maynard, is my "head still firmly in my ass?"
Really?
You acknowledge that you can hear "sense your enemy" and then you want to call me a punk-ass and call it "speculation."
Is this an opinion page?
you say you're going to tend to roll with what the author says instead of some punk-ass poster? Well, if that's the case, you're going to roll with "sense your enemy." He writes saturating, but says otherwise.
I just can't believe you hear "holy" in bottom. I mean, why the fuck would weakness, guilt, and hatred make you feel holy? Obviously, "ugly" fits the context of the song, not to mention you can hear the word clear as day.

alright three deviations, i seriously dont know how you are getting holy in bottom and sense your enemy in undertow, all i hear is saturating me and ugly, even if the lyrics werent posted id still think that...
The "gap" (Pushit) you made a credible reference to is the same thing going on here... where this self analysis occurs. Or what I call the "eye of the storm." Like the eye of a hurricane... where it's actually relatively pleasant when everything around it is out of control.
the "eye of the storm" or gap is where he's contemplating his feelings of guilt, shame and "ugliness."
He says "ugly" the first time, he says "holy" the 2nd time.
When he says ugly... he's acknowledging that he is weak... he's acknowledging there's hatred within him.. he acknowledges he's broken... and all of these negative aspects of his personality make him feel ugly inside... with GUILT.
When he says it makes me feel "holy".... he's saying there's a side of him that feels self-righteous WITHOUT GUILT... Ultra Superior... or "holy"... it's sort of tongue in cheek.
"My piss and moans" are fuel and I set my head on fire.
This line is comparable to Schism when he says, "mildewed and smoldering." He brings in two words that are opposites that represent the two different emotions... or personalities.
His "piss" is the GUILT FREE side of him...
his "moans" derive from side with feelings of GUILT.
these two different feelings is the "fuel" that makes him "set his head on fire."
Want another contrast... or paired opposites representing the "ugly" vs "holy" war...
"I'm on my knees and burning."
When are you typically "on your knees?" When you're praying. = GUILTY SIDE
but then he says "and burning" representing the hellion... GUILT FREE.
Also, how could there be any "guilt" if he had no feelings of remorse...
and probably the best thing that has come from all of this....
this line..
"I'm broken, looking up to see the ENEMY."
SENSE YOUR ENEMY

Triad, ok. So your mind isn't going to change-
at least not on this page.
All you hear is "saturating" and "ugly"... that's probably because that's all you try to listen for... afterall, that's what's listed on the holy grail of lyric pages.
and if I'm such a fruitcake, lacking credibility, and have no fucking clue.. then why come back?

u do realize u just called yourself a fruitcake... i never said that... and no i tried to hear what you hear on both live versions of each song and studio versions of the song, he does not say sense your enemy in undertow , or holy in bottom, as much as you think he does you are wrong.. and you are the only one who hears this... sure sense your enemy and saturating me are vlose, but thats not what maynards saying .. and since when did the word guilt = the word holy??.. try singing along with bottom and undertow and plug in "ugly" and " saturating me" trust me it fits..
edit: holy shit i got something that leaves sense your enemy totally null and void...
maynard says "shut up shut up shut up shut up you're saturating me" now if he said this "shut up shut up shut up shut up you're sense your enemy" it makes no sense, and if im not hearing things he says you're as bright as day... so saying sense your enemy after you're makes no sense, case closed dont waste any more time...
I hear "UGLINESS keeps me alive". This is substantiated by "GUILT, HATRED, WEAKNESS fed makes me feel UGLY." So at the end, he mentions "hatred, weakness, UGLINESS, guilt keeps me alive at the bottom." I don't see any reason he would say "happiness".

exactly ... three deviations is crazy, there is no reason why he would say happieness.... three deviations: stop while your ahead, in the context of the songs what you think he is saying makes no sense
I hear "you're" very clearly. I'm sorry, I just do. I'm not trying to say you're wrong or whatever, I'm just saying I really do hear "you're" before "saturating me". That is the number one reason I believe it to be "saturating me". Otherwise, I would DEFINITELY think it was "said your enemy." But the "you're" makes it undeniably "saturating me". It just does. And I can say "saturating me" exactly like Maynard does (I do when I sing along with the song). So I know it fits. 3Deviations, try it. "You're sat-ur-ating me". Seriously, sing that with Maynard. You may find that it is very possible that he in fact says what he posted (even though he often says something different).

I thought it was "saturating" for over a decade. So dont suggest I try listening for it.
So you can hear "you're" clear as day eh? That's comical. But if that's what you claim to hear... then so be it.
I just dont know how you claim to hear "said your enemy"... but since he vaguely mumbles something before he says it... you assume it must be "saturating" since that's what's posted in the lyrics. Whatever dude.
Give it another 10 years of listening... you may change your mind.
and explain how you can say "saturating" even if "you're singing along the way Maynard sings it..." without ever making an "ATE" sound.
It's impossible.
"Humidity" is a word that you can mess with the pronunciation and the emphasis... and it comes out pretty much the same every time. "Saturating" isn't one of those words.
I hear "you're". It's there! Clear as day!!!!! So that would imply you're wrong. Oh well. And this whole thing with "ate". Jesus Christ. "Satur-ating me." The "ate" is pronounced very fast, as well as the phrase. This could go on forever and ever and ever. I don't know why you're being so damn stubborn thinking you know something that "know one else" is aware of. Oh well, I'm done with it. He says "saturating"; end of story. Next................

you say you hear "your enemy" when you listen to it... but it's "undeniably" "saturating." Yeah, that makes sense.
Enough said, bozo.
Plexus, "saturating" has no association with water in the context it would be used if he actually said that during the song.
and saturating isn't necessarily synomous with water by definition.
I would agree that you'd associate it with the "water theme" until you actually analyzed the context in which it was used. (but it's actually never even used at all.... other than in the lyrics.)
where's your old avatar... it was smokin.

Here's how I relate it the context of the song,
"shut up, shut up, shut up...YOU'RE saturating me.
It's like the enemy or the snake/inside is telling me all these negative things about me, trying to become me. It's saturating me. So I'm telling it "shut up, you're saturating me". I am me and not letting you inside. I'm not going to let you pull me under.

by the way, the "bozo" comment, I'm saying the two phrases sound nearly exactly the same when said in a similar manner. The "you're" is what gives way to the truth.

I said, "Plexus"... I should've said "Paraflux"... he or she was the one who said that "saturating" related to the water theme.... so Path, the 2nd half of that post was directed to Paraflux. (who I thought was Plexus)
You are right on with your take on the "saturating/sense your enemy" meaning.
I always heard it as 'sex your enemy', and as for Three Deviations... are you phsycotic?
What makes you think you can tell everyone the exact meaning of a song that you didn't even write? I'm amazed at what an arrogant peice of shit you come across as... Fuck you! I have my own interpretations of Tool songs that I made long ago when they first came out, before I had a computer and before lyrics where even released.
I don't give a flying shit what you think you hear and how right you think you are because.... 'I can say what I want to, even if i'm not serious... why don't you go fuck yourself". Interpret that motherfucker!
shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, SENSE YOUR ENEMY.

I always had a hard time believing he was saying "saturating," despite what the official lyrics say. I always thought it was "says" or "said" your enemy. Listening again, however, it does sound an awful lot like "sense..."

Glad to see someone else out there actually listens to what's being said.

I try :) Honestly, there are so many words in Tool's songs that could be so many other words, I try to always keep an open mind because I know how Maynard is lol I keep listening to "Undertow" however, and I do keep hearing "Sense" which makes more sense than "says" or "said." It's definitely not saturating, at least not in the album version.
"your saturating me" to the original poster... please "shut up shut up shut up your saturating me" get it? he is being saturated (a form of mind control) with words and doesnt wanna hear it anymore. please, take your own advice and listen to it again.... from outside your box.
oh yeah, and live it much clearer, hope they play it in your town so you can listen.
but yeah.... he isnt "gonna spoon feed anyone" with the lyrics.... so hear what you like.

ThreeDeviations...... but you can clearly hear him slurring "you're" in "you're saturating me". listen to right before he says what you think is "sence your enemy"...whats he saying there? he says "you're" and follows it with "saturating me". doesnt make sence for him to say "you're sence your enemy" maybe if he said "you're sencing your enemy" but he doesnt.
