Great fucking show! theater was amazing. Opened with Rosetta Stoned and played pretty much the exact same setlist as the last two shows. Show was a little short, but it was advertised as a "warm up show." Everytime I see them it just gets better. Can't wait until the fall.

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Our seats were amazing. First row balcony. I would probably prefer these to any other in the venue since we were only about 50 feet from the stage, yet we're looking from above so watching Danny the whole time is feasible. Same setlist as Seattle it seems.

The main reason I paid a scalper 400 bucks for these seats is that in a large venue, such as Oakland arena, it sounds like shit. The high frequency reverberation is unbearable. The crowd's singing is annoying. This way, I get to hear the band in an acoustically designed venue.

Here's to the fall show being at Shoreline...

Dude, TOTALLY worth the big bucks, I agree! Tix in my section Balcony Row V were $320, and I think I got my money's worth and more tonight.

BTW did anyone see me there, I had a denim jacket on with a bunch of patches, medium/long black hair, pretty tall about 6"2, black jeans?

Hahahahha yeah I only caught part of it while actually there. What was that San Francisco quote, and the one about trying to win you over or something??? I like when he said "We'll those were some songs, and now we're gonna play......some more songs." :D

Maynard:
"Oakland. I'm not from, but I'm familiar, with Oakland. It's like San Francisco, only better. That's just me trying to win you over." Then he said something like "Don't listen to me," or, "I don't know what I'm talking about." Something along those lines.

great show.

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

good show
Same setlist as Seattle, which is the same setlist as Coachella but with Rosetta Stoned (with an abbreviated Lost Keys style intro) added at the beginning. Stinkfist was the album version not the super awesome extended version that I've become so used to hearing live over the years. That sort of caught me off guard. The new material sounded great. There were a couple small hiccups here and there but nothing major. Rosetta Stoned was quite wonderful, with Maynard using a megaphone and perfectly reproducing that super fast talking in the beginning. That was excellent. Danny has returned to the remote hihat, straight sticking it between his rack toms. He had a nice setup of 4 or 5 Mandala pads of to his left, along with a bunch of splashes, chimes/bells. He also has a nice flat screen setup at the far left and triggered what looked like a Roland Handsonic over there. He used that for the melodic bell sounds in Vicarious. Overall, they kicked ass. It was really nice to be able to see them at this venue. So much better than an arena. My only issue was the setlist. It came off as a kind of "best of Tool." I would have loved to have heard more from 10,000 Days and WAY more from Undertow and Ænima. Or at least less frequently played cuts from all the records up to 10,000 Days. (Then again, I've seen them 14 times or so over quite a few years so maybe I've just heard these songs live so many times). But this is a warmup tour so I'm sure (I hope) the setlists will get more interesting during the big tour. Great show!

SETLIST:
Rosetta Stoned
Stinkfist
The Pot
Forty-six & 2
Jambi
Schism
Eon Blue Apocalypse
The Patient
Sober
Lateralus
Vicarious
Ænema

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Good show, but not great. The general consensus in my group was that the band was a little sloppy (adam notably) and the setlist was dissapointing...we were hoping for some kind of unique selection (jimmy, hooker, or something off 10k).

The background video was half assed.

On the positive side, it was Tool. Can't wait to see them when they are in full gear later this year.

They weren't totally tight, but the sound was incredible. Way better than the small venue tour for Lateralus. The Pot, Jambi, and Vicarious are all fucking amazing live.

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Nothing beats a small venue. I had a ticket already, but I arrived early and purchased another ticket via box office (I waited four hours for it $66.66). I met a lot of cool people while waiting, but waiting always blows (this was actually a mild form of torture because nobody was sure if they would get a ticket).

The box office ticket was fantastic - dead center right up against the mixing boards. My friend got my original ticket.

The posters were $20.00 (sold out before the show was over), T's $35 (get the white t-shirt if you can!!!).

Maynard: "Pee Wee's Playhouse is always nice", right before they went into Jambi.

Wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Do what it takes, and go if you can.

I just got home from bar hopping with tool fans... Bottom line.. over all its TOOL.. it was spectacular. Jambi, Lateralus an Sober were the best.. Justin may not know it but he is the best at the bass that ive ever seen

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

I believe Les Claypool sat only 3 seats away from me in Row H. There was only 2 of us that actually recognized him, while everyone else sitting near us didn't even know who Les was. But anyways....

I was actually able to watch the show for free. The TA tickets that were reserved to buy only required me to initial the ticket packaging, no payment whatsoever. The other TA guy who won the chance to buy tickets was there as well, pretty cool.

First Maynardism of the night: "So yeah, TOOL and shit..."

The staff was very strict about people not taking pictures with their phones during the show. If any staff member saw someone fondling their cellphone, they were on them instantly.

Danny's drums tore up my innards. Being that close and feeling the bass reverbrate throughout my body, heavenly at first but now my body aches all over. And that gong hit in Lateralus....holy shit!

You can tell they are still rather rusty, especially Adam. Lots of missed/sour notes. Even MJK would slightly shake his head whenever Adam botched certain parts. But that's what this mini-tour is for anyways....

Overall, an awesome show at an awesome venue. Lots of love in the crowd as well, at least in our area of the theatre. I enjoyed this more than the TOOL/King Crimson concert in Berkeley. Hopefully they do more "intimate setting" concerts, the music sounds so much better, there's hardly ever a bad seat, and there's no worry of bullheaded moshers.

And oh yeah, The Pot is a killer when played live.

Switch the Pot and 46 & 2 and you've got the right setlist.

The boys have come a long way since I first saw them open for Henry Rollins at the Warfield in July 1992. I think this was my 23rd Tool show (I lost my list) and they just keep getting better. No complaints, well maybe just the meatheads that invaded mine & my wife's space throughout the show. But the music and visuals again were an amazing blend. I'm actually looking forward to the arena shows to see how much more they add to the stage.

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

We saw them in Chicago(small venue like this), Berkeley twice, Sacramento, Fresno, Oakland and Shoreline the last tour, maybe another time I missed. All I can say is wow, they did it again. I always leave their shows in awe and totally inspired. Their music inspires me to be creative and to live life to the fullest. Thank you Tool! Can't wait to see them again.

My impressions:
The new songs are phenomenal live.
Did anyone notice that Maynard seems like he is definitely slowing down. His voice isn't though. Even during 46 and 2, a song that used to get him flopping all over, he was somethat mellow. It was cool to watch though because he seems almost relaxed and at peace now.
Adam slipped once, big deal, he's human.
Loved all the new changes to old songs.
Did anyone else notice how quite is was when you were leaving the theater? Speechless?

Sleep now......

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Alright... long time lurker... first time poster.... here goes.........
10th or 11th t Tool show, and first time seeing Tool in a small venue since Roseland Ballroom in NY way back in '95 i think.
Performance was flawless and the setlist was the same as Seattle with a couple of rearranged tracks. Everyone brought their 'A' game and I was very impressed. "Still crazy after all these years" I thought. I kinda wished the sound was a bit better however... I was in the 9th row and thought the highs were really tinny and at times Maynard was barely audible...
But all in all it was a great set, but not the religious experience of seeing them for the first time in '92, but then again better than Lateralus tour.

Some funny quotes:

"So... Oakland, huh?... Kinda like San Francisco, only better.... (crowd silence)... Okay that was our pathetic attempt to win you over..."

"Thank you very much. Thoses were some songs.... and coming up next... some more songs".

Classic.

Here's why I'm glad I'm a scumbag Tool fan who made a small fortune on Ebay selling the 5 extra tickets I got through Ticketmaster:

On the right of me was a kid in his early twenties (paid $450 for his seat, TYVM) who showed up late, sometime into Stinkfist. He pulled out his derring mid song and sniffed enough crystal meth to give a horse cardiac arrest. After some random air drum and guitar solo performances, he excused himself from his seat only moments later, tapping me going "dude.... I gotta get the f#ck outta here...". Okay. Cool. Knock yourself out.
He returned halfway through the set only to do an encore snort/air drum/guitar diddy and then tapped me again "bro... let me outta here, please... i gotta go..." .
So much for feeling guilty about making a few bucks on that ticket.

And to my left was a short, fat, late thirties to forty something metal/pseudo hippy chick... just the type of girl you'd expect to see swimming around in the sausage fiesta that is a small venue Tool show. We made some small talk before the band went on, and laughed a bit about my being escorted to the coat check by security for taking photos not once, but twice (that's another story all together) with my cell phone.
When she lit up a thumb sized bone during 'Lost Keys" I thought, "cool" maybe she'll smoke me out if I ask her nicely. I politely told her that I'd be happy to pay for her parking or buy her a drink for just a couple of pulls on her doobie, and gave her the sad puppy dog eyes and all. She blew me off like I was a vagrant on Market street begging for change. I couldn't believe it... it's not even like she was toking exotics or anything, it smelled like low grade commercial mexican swag to me... in the Bay Area no less. Pathetic, but whatever....
She paid $375 for her seat, so I shrugged it off with a smile.

To make a long story short... the above nonsense notwithstanding - the crowd had great time, Maynard and the boys rocked out and played a killer set, and I got to see a great show plus made some great coin in the process... who could ask for anything more?

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Wow. You guys all got on here fast. It was my first Tool show and it was amazing. I have been a fan for a long time but never made it to a show till now. I got some pics and vid of the concert. Rosetta Stoned was very hard to hear the vocals but after that it got better. For the most part the guys really rocked the show. However, I know they know how much we forked out for these shows and I wish they would have played longer. I was on the right side of the balcony towards the front. My seat was right on the aisle and the security busted a guy for smoking a joint near me. I was asked to stop taking photos twice too. The 2nd time the guy said I had to leave or give up my camera. I made them check it in for me and took out the memory card just in case :)

It was really hard to keep the camera steady in this low of light and from my distance. However, here is the better stuff I got. Sorry, the videos are short. Like I said, it was sketchy.

PHOTOS AND VIDEO: http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/3rdeyepro/tool%20oakland%20050406/

Cheers.

Oh yeah.... the new songs really rip live, much more powerful than the record. Vicarious, Jambi, The Pot, Sober, and the Patient were all highlights. Wait a minute.. that's half the set. Okay, the whole set kicked ass, but those were the best in my opinion.

Great show. Guys were relaxed, cheerful etc. kinda like the crowd. As previously stated all new songs rip live and they've already got 'em down pat. Stinkfist brought out the flood of emotions from past shows and listening experiences... that's when I realized how rusty I was in terms of rocking out... but I did find my groove pretty quickly. Funny Maynard, short--sweet--good times. Fantastic venue, worth the dough-- sell your kids for sure. Did I mention Danny was rippin' it like always?? See you in the fall........

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Phenomenal show. Tool in a small venue were as astounding as I thought they'd be! They played my two favorite songs and just blew me away with them (Aenima & Lateralus). The view (balcony center) and sound were great, except the vocals on Rosetta Stoned were not clear at all when Maynard did the fast parts. From where I sat I could clearly see Danny, which was fantastic. I've always wanted a clear shot at watching him perform. Their new songs are great live (of course). The theater was really cool-- a refurbished art deco place. I met a few very nice Tool fans, had a great time and overall was blown away. It was worth every cent and the drive! I'll sleep so damn good tonight! I can't wait to see them again!!

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

OK, so after Coachella I was really looking forward to being able to actually watch the show, and not just the screens. Even though our seats were in the balcony (row T out of Z total), we had a great view just over the entry ramps. The sound was a little muddy at that altitude, but it got better as the show went along.

Speaking of getting better, right after The Patient Danny came out from the drum set and the band had an impromptu intermission on the stage. I figured that Danny was probably trying to check his cell phone for a Lakers update (too bad they lost...) Anyway the last four songs after that, "Sober, Lateralus, Vicarious and Aenima" were all tight as hell. It was like watching the rust just fall off and they fell into a groove with eachother.

Danny's cymbal rolls during Sober were excellent. I've got to pull out Undertow to see if those are new or were there all along...

Maynard's story about the roughians "stealing the cop" ended with, "and then they stole the point to this story."

Adam wasn't wearing shoes.

And the $50 long sleeve shirts are badass.

I believe that was his megaphone for Rosetta Stoned.

DAMN fine show, I have to say. And to the dude that posted pics, NICE JOB! Thanks!

Loved the venue, a nice... small theatre. We were in the nosebleeds, but happy to be there. For a fan, going to see Tool is as akin to the faithful, heading to Church.

I noticed Maynard stayed mostly in his darkened square on the stage, just a sillohette on the video screen, with his cowboy hat on.

Did anyone notice he subbed out L. Ron Hubbard for Rupurt Murdock on Aenima? Someone sayd he did it for Seattle too, pretty cool.

Great show, some missed notes I did notice that as well, but hey, whatever. That IS what the small show is all about. I'm happy, and I'll see em again later this year, I'm sure.

Expensive swag! Holy crap! Good stuff though :) glad I got the shirt, and my girl will be stoked on the "Hot Pants" :P

It must have been dependent upon where you were at in the venue. I was on the floor, about ten rows back on Justin's side and those vocals were so clear for me. I was really impressed by that part specifically. I did have a little trouble hearing bits and pieces here and there (Danny's electronics never seemed loud enough) but overall, not bad at all.

Yeah, it's too bad that part wasn't clear from where I was sitting. Kinda disappointing cuz I REALLY wanted to hear Maynard do that fast vocal bit live. Ahh well, that was the only part of the show that was inaudible for me. I thought the sound for the rest of the show was great-- with LOTS of thunderous drumming (yessssss).

Loved the show was it just me or was everybody singing along to every song? I really wish they would have played 10,000 days though. I got 2 of the posters and some guy offered me double what i paid for one on the way out ($40.00) but I kept it anyway. also a big fuck you to the asshole right behind me screaming off key into my left ear for part of the show. well worth the drive from fresno. was i the only one that noticed that justin wasn't getting the pedal to work right at the beginning of the patient? and adam did mess up a few times but it seems like he only messes up on the easy stuff that he plays by himself like the intros.

It looked like a keyboard, but it may have been some other programable device.

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

I wonder why the sound wasn't so good for some of you guys in other places? I could hear everything perfect from where I was up in Row V, including the fast parts in Rosetta Stoned which I was certain were gonna get muffled. The sound quality was the best of any hsow I've been too. Asmy usual quip though, I think it could have been slightly louder, but if that means sacrificng the sound quality then no way. Adam was the only band member who screwed up, Justin/Danny/Maynard all were 100%. Adam botched the intro to Eon Blue Apocalypse a bit and also kind of fucked the intro to Lateralus. Otherwise he was fine though, no other noticeable errors.
