I killed off today trying to decipher this song...anyway, i figured the best way for me to explain my interpretation would be to switch the original lyrics with what i've assumed it is Maynard's trying to say, as best i can. The Pot = America for example.

......................

Who are you to preach your judgements?
You mustn’t have been thinking straight
You’re so steeped in treachery
You’ve manufactured from the lives of the dead

Use 9/11 as a precursor to dominate
Then distort the facts and your intentions
Entertainment driven country on shaky foundations
So be precautious with your accusations

You must have been delirious

Scratching for answers but blinded by your ignorance
Hard to find the right thing to say?
Difficult to have the proper explanation
Until you give your arrogance away!

You must have felt so spiteful
You must have felt, so bold

Do what you find necessary, forget being so cynical
The administration’s victimized the population-along with foreign citizens

Now you’re overplaying threats of a repeat attack
Place 9/11 before our eyes
When you defied the international community
You must have been…

Who are you to criticize another way of governing?
So arrogant
Your history’s littered with injustice
Fucking hypocrite

You’re doing what you’ve slammed in the past
At Guantanamo you can’t pick the guilty from the innocent

Now you’re overplaying threats of a repeat attack
Place 9/11 before our eyes
When you defied the international community
You must have been…

Who are you to pass your judgements?
Who are you to? With your consumer driven economy
You must feel divine…

Citizens weeping tears over spilt blood
Attacked without a reason
Citizens weeping tears over spilt blood

Differentiate between now and the past
This administration’s culpable. Though as guilty as the government.

Now you’re overplaying threats of a repeat attack
Place 9/11 before our eyes
When you defied the international community

You must have been…delirious

You’re responsible for so much blood shed
You’re responsible for all of this mess
Delirium, no way. You must have been crazy!
...................

I hammered that out today, so i know it won't be perfect. Plus the almost, London bombings don't really support the chorus. Anyway, I didn't want to use delirious everytime he says high, so i added a little flavour to it. just one more thing, where i've written blood shed above, i think he says bloody waters in the song, which makes me think Iraq.

What do you think anyway?

awesome, i love it. it may not be hitting the nail on the head, but it's proof nonetheless that tool's music really inspires creative thought in their audience.

Yeah, me too.

Like the guy said earlier, it may not be hitting the nail on the head, but it's a valiant effort. I've said this before, The Pot is a kind of song you really have to 'decode' to find it's meaning. For instance, who the hell is the 'you' in this song? I guess it can be anybody, therefore, you can really tie a helluva lot of meanings to this one song. People seem to agree on the over-all theme of this song, but beyond that, everyone's interpretation is somewhat different. It's actually what I kinda like about this song.

Thanks for the comments! You're right, i've gradually had about three different ideas about The pot myself ha ha. I hope after Maynard retires, that he releases a book of memoirs to reveal the definition behind his songs, though i doubt he will...i get the feeling he likes playing with our minds. Pardon the pun!
