I am a member of a different forum for a different band and they did something like this and it was actually pretty interesting. Let us see what you think of it.
Above this post are the opening lyrics from all of Tool's albums (including Opiate, but not including Salival). Just select which one you think sets the best tone for the album.
:EDIT: People have pointed out that my lyrics for Vicarious are wrong. The correct lyrics are "Eye on the TV 'cause tragedy thrills me." My apologies.
AEnima isn't my favorite album, but pretending I've never heard the songs and just reading the opening lyrics, "Something has to change" is the best, I think.
well purely based on the very first line it has to be Stinkfist, however I believe that you can only truely appreciate a song as a whole. Saying that though, Vicarious has a rubbish lyrical opening.
This poll would have been a hell of alot more accurate had you not put the lyrics "I own the TV" for Vicarious. I voted for stinkfist, but wouldve voted for Vic.

Edit: Nevermind you fucked all the lyrics.
I resent that.
I copied and pasted all the lyrics on the poll directly from Toolband.com. The only one I didn't copy and paste from there is Vicarious, but that is what I heard when I listened to the song. If it truely is "Eye on the TV" instead of what I have, forgive me, but I certainly did not "fuck all the lyrics".
I chose AEnima's opening because I think it answers the poll the best ("sets the best tone for the album"). That one seemed to fit the theme of the rest of the album better than the other opening lines.
The Grudge, there will never be an opening track like the Grudge ever again.
Fucking......TIMES A MILLION!
__________________ I think this song is about old people and growing older. In the beginning of the song I believe I heard mention of watching re-runs of X-files, and old people really love that show.No one ever listens to old people. I can't remember one time when they weren't harping on about the good ol' days and talking about nonsensical things that never happened, while watching X-files, in their small and cluttered room in Happy Acres Retirement Homes, all the while they were pleading with me to listen.

Ok I was a little harsh. But If I really have to attack you for something... why don't I go with the crowd here...
WHERE THE FUCK IS SALIVAL??
That's a question I asked in a thread like this a week ago.

I had to vote for Stinkfist. I think that that song will always and forever be my favorite of all time. There is absolutetly nothing else like it.

beginning of stinkfist is the best mood setting intro to a CD ive ever heard.

i don't think it can never happen again, but I would be amazed. I mean GOD DAMN THATS A TRACK

"Something has to change..."
Unfortunately, these simple words are going to be relevant for a long time.
Stinkfist has my vote.

Maybe I'm just a total OGT, but when I first heard the opening lines to Sweat back in the day, I just thought "Holy shit these guys are going to be huge one day." I was floored after I heard those words combined with the music they were being sung over.
True, though, not a bad lyric in the bunch. Every time I hear "Eye on the TV..." I get completely pumped for the listening experience of 10,000 Days.
