a lot of you guys are making this whole song way to complicated...and i understand how that sounds, but i mean phonetically. It's, for the most part, pretty cut and dry, most of the words are right there laid out on the table for you, not to hard to understand or anything. Go back to a lot of original interpretations, you'll find most of them are pretty spot on.

^^what about the second line...it sounds like Halloween is sung, whithout the L-sound...cut-n-dry there? I've yet to see but the SLIGHTEST agreence on "we'an"... ie: "How we'an follow the path..." cept, it's right there, if you listen...personally I don't think anything MJK sings is "cut and dry" it's just never been that way. Take Wings, that shit is messed up yo..."In... ...rise..." WHAT? x-weez me?? anyway...hell, if "pretty spot on." is the same as "kinda pretty close." then I agree, but that's also why there's room to squable.

I don't understand why everyone thinks it's "ignorant flippants"...if you look up the word flippant, the only definitions for it are adjectives. It's not a noun, but it seems to me that we're using it as a noun by saying "Ignorant flippants in the congregation". Aside from not making grammatical sense, it's kind of an obscure word and doesn't seem to flow well with the rest of the lyrics. Anyone agree?

Yeah, it makes sense as 'fibbers' but it also *sounds* like he's making an 'fl' sound so 'flippants' is what people hear. - but yes, 'flippant' isn't a noun in any case. He's not saying 'flippants'.

I think it is flippant. he's calling the people flippant. Think of it as a "you understood" sentence from back in grammar school. If I said, "Carry this box", you automatically know I'm referring to you.

"Ignorant flippants in the congregation" - It's understood that the people are being flippant. Maynard is just using a little poetic license. While not gramatically correct, the message is conveyed.

yea, I read that. I am conceding that it is an adjective. My post was just to let everyone know that it's OK that flippant is an adjective, it still works, and most likely is exactly what MJK says.

I'll concede to that possibility - after all, it does sound like 'flippants' whether it's correct or not.

Phonetically it sure sounds like 'flippants' - the only thing keeping from saying yes was that it isn't a noun... but... if that dictionary thing is accurate, then sure, why not?

^ Sorry to be a grammar nazi once more, but "shun" is not a past tense verb for "shine". The correct word would be "shone". "Shun" is a present tense verb and means to reject or avoid someone or something.

I listen for that line, yes. But it started sounding like "I'll let've shine but guide me safely on your way ...your way home."
Ecspesially the "BUT" instead of "to" - and the "me" instead of "you safely..."
It perked my ear and I listened again & again and heard: "I already've shun but god is safely on your wing ...your way home."
Meaning; I have already shunned(the use of 'shun' to be MEANT as past tense/slang), but god is safely on your wing (which is) your way home.
But working, maybe just as well, would be; ...but guide me safly on your way, your way home. Meaning, that little light that Jimmy holds, and Maynards "way home" ... "I'm, headed back home."

This is ludicrous. In even the slightest attempts, you can tell he does NOT say "I'm gonna let it shine..." and upon further investigation it is discernible he does not say 'to' but 'but' or "you" but rather 'me'.

However "safely on your way" could be correct. But that even sounds like it could be 'wing' ...waaay at the end of way/wing it sort of sounds like you can hear him enounciate the ng-sound.

Well holy shyt. Other than 'siblings' all the contended lyrics were as I thought they were. I'd be proud of myself but, then again, it's a just a fucking song, you know?

(Although I have strong belief that 'siblings' is a contrived lyric and that's not really what he sings on the album at all. I still hear 'flippants' pretty clearly.)

This is NEVER what he's saying. NEVER!!!

For the record, the official lyrics often differ slightly from what he actually says on the album; a very obvious example is Aenema (two of the "fret for your..."s are reversed). Also, it sounds like "I'ma let it shine."
