Two years ago today it came out. Now while I wont say I was in love with it when I finished my first listen, I will say that over time it has grown on me.
Which I suppose is a good thing, I'd rather hate it right way and enjoy it eventually compared to loving it then falling-out of love.
Congrats to Adam, Danny, Justin & Maynard for making 10,000 Days a suitable follow-up to "Lateralus" and "Ænima"

Still after two years.. its still the only Tool album i cant listen to all the way through.. from the beginning to the end. Maybe its just because the track order doesn't sit well with me. Who knows..

I hardly listen to this album anymore. I like all the songs except for 23 but something about it doesn't really jive with me.
I'd see them live again in a heartbeat, the end of the 07 tour was freaking magnificent.

When this album was first released, I actually was not even a fan of Tool. I mean sure, I rocked out to Schism on the radio, but I honestly was oblivious. And then, sometime in the summer of 06' a friend gave me a burnt copy of 10,000 days and I popped it in. I have been a devoted fan ever since!

10,000 Days changed me from a blundering asswipe to what I am now.
Now I'm an asshole, heh.
It made me think more, it made me cry, it made me laugh...and it comforted me. Through so much turmoil over these two years---I've developed a change that is both a curse and a blessing.
It's like being reborn. :)
And that was sappy as hell, but it really did.
Especially Wings and 10K.
I don't want to explain what I felt after hearing that song, because you'll all say it was a boner, but it the change was so sudden, it was almost as if it were meant to change me, and all of us.

When it came out I loved it, but I couldn't help feeling a bit disappointed that it isn't half as good as Lateralus. It's still a great album though, and Im looking forward to the next one.

From a song perspective, it's hard to pinpoint why XMDays just doesn't feel as epic as Lateralus or Ænima. Like every album, there's songs I like more than others but on the whole these are solid. But I would rank it the third best album overall.
I think Tool fucked up the sequencing. And with Tool, sequencing is a big deal. Vicarious is a great lead off track, but Right In Two as a closer does not measure up to Third Eye or D/R/T. Those two songs/sequences leave you with "wow, what an album" impression. Right In Two leaves me "oh, the album's over." That said I still absolutely love Rosetta Stoned, Vicarious, Jambi, and The Pot. As far as Wings it's more of a "respect" for this song than personal liking. I think Right In Two is middle of the road Tool, I don't skip the song, but it doesn't do much for me.
I think closing with Rosetta Stoned would have made this album a lot better. I would have sequenced it:
1. Jambi
2. The Pot
3. Vicarious
4. Wings I
5. Wings II
6. Intension
7. Right In Two
8. Lipan Conjuring
9. Lost Keys
10. Rosetta Stoned
11. 23

I listen to 10k days the most out of all of their albums. It just always seems refreshing to me, while their other albums grow stale. Also, I find to enjoy Lateralus you need to pay attention to the music and get involved with it, rather than just put it on and do something. On a busy schedule, I don't have much time to do that so it gets the longest shelf life.

I will say the album somehow "felt" right as in a natural progression. And I don't mean progression in terms of better or superior but rather use that description to encapsulate the direction the band seems to have headed down musically. Each album builds on musical themes from earlier albums while maintaining creative integrity and experimentation. When I listen to 10,000 Days and then listen to Opiate it is obvious the band's musical vocabulary has grown in leaps and bounds and most importantly four very talented individuals have somehow found a way to keep the music they create relevant which I know takes a tremendous amount of sacrifice and restraint. What makes Tool compelling is the end product. They seem to have a deeply fundemental understanding of the importance of allowing a piece of music to blossom rather than trying to force it.

I agree with you on the fact that Tool evolved throughout the years, but i also think they made a drastic change in music between Ænima and Lateralus. This is the point where alot of old Toolfans started to dislike the new approach of the band and gained alot of new fans.
I'll take on any new album with no expectations and just let the music do the talking. Will ik like it or dislike it? I dunno, but time will tell.
