Re: In my current opinion, Undertow > All other Tool albums

If you can objectively measure art, who's better:
Mike Portnoy or Neil Peart?
Joe Satriani or John Petrutchi?
MJK or Chris Cornell?
Justin Or Paul (of TooL)?

Maybe compare albums:
Lateralus or Scenes from a Memory?
Ashes of the Wake or The End of Heartache?

Bands:
TooL or Dream Theater?
Soundgarden or Pearl Jam?

How do you "objectively" define which of any of these things are better? Since it can be done, pick just one of these comparisons, and objectively define which is better, and tell me why.

I would have to argue that an emotional connection to the music is a big part to what makes music good. A song can be technical, and creative, and (insert objective measure) and still be boring as shit (hence Dream Theater).

I also have to ask one question: you said that because you have a background in music, your opinion should be regarded higher than someone elses who doesn't. But regarded higher by whom?

Helpful, aren't you?

Having re-read the shit, I'm going to add another question: would you consider emotional reaction to music to be a part of how you judge music?

Re: In my current opinion, Undertow > All other Tool albums

Ya think so?
I find it kind of disturbing that people can't figure out what you've been saying, Pheeze. Its a pretty straightforward point, even if this thread didn't really call for it. I get pissed off too when people with no musical knowledge attempt to tell me which music is better than others. Not like I haven't been playing music for the last 11 years...

See, you play and understand music, so you're able to seperate your personal tastes and preferences from the music's objective quality. Most people aren't able to do that, or even to see that it's necessary.
