Why hasn't this been remastered yet?

Seriiously, this is Tool's best work but it's current mix doesn't do it justice.

I hope it's not because they are too caught up in their l337 spiritual epic stage that they will not give this album the attention it deserves.

I agree. It is not their best but when I heared Sober, Prison Sex and now Swamp Song live they finally hit home. The album Undertow is really low quality.

Re: Why hasn't this been remastered yet?

This album needs it's volume levels bumped up.

Maybe they could re-release it with a DVD?

I find little wrong with it as it is. If anything Opiate needs remastering...they re-released it but I think that's slight packaging changes.

It was because of the explicit album art.

Re: Why hasn't this been remastered yet?

Hold on a sec everyone...

Undertow DOES NOT need to be remastered.

I'll say that again, Undertow DOES NOT need to be remastered.

Here's why : It is crystal clear as is. This is how you can tell the difference between a good mastering & not good mastering. You need to listen in headphones to Undertow. LOUD. You can still hear every piece of music. Now, if you put in 10,000 days, without changing the volume, it is full of distortion. If you're having trouble through headphones seeing what I'm talking about, try it through regular speakers. Too much rumble & distortion.

Rule of thumb, listen through a better stereo, don't make the album louder. Too much quality is lost.

Somewhere, there is a version of 10,000 days that is the same "loudness" & clarity as Undertow. I would definitely pay to hear that. It it the original cut prior to mastering.

Goddammit, I hate when people say shit like that. TURN THE VOLUME UP ON YOUR DEVICE. People with similar minds as you are perpetuating the loudness war and ruining the chance of getting decently mastered music.

Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gmex_4hreQ

And as I said in the Ćnima remastered thread in Socialize, both Undertow and Opiate are mastered very, very well.

and btw, thanks for linking to my thread. Some of the shit I said was a little off base, but overall the message is good.

I wasnt going to bother posting until I saw this post... finally, someone understands dynamics of shit. Undertow is perfect as it is. It's raw, gritty, everything it needs to be for what it means. Polishing it would only serve to diminish the quality. You guys want it to sound like Nirvana's nevermind, for fuck sake?

Undertow is by far my favorite Tool album.
Also Referred to as "Over the Rainbow."

About the remaster:
If any of you are registered torrent users on Demonoid.com there is an unofficial Undertow remaster. I never minded to download it, as I dont download Tool's copyrighted material, but if you are interested, it is there.

Get Audacity (it's free) and do it yourself. The album just needs some minor equalization tweaks.

Re: Why hasn't this been remastered yet?

Like the great mind of flux said....

Undertow is perfect AS IS for its lack of instrumental effects.

It's supposed to be raw and gritty mainly for the intensity and anger it reflects, but also b/c of the absence of the cool new toys they acquired from the money of Undertow. They did the best for what they had and it sounded fuckin intense. The drums even have more punch in them.

Oh well, just IMO.

:)

Meh, if you bought it, and you want to give the sound better clarity, go for it. That's my opinion anyway...

If it's given the right equalization tweaks, it makes the sounds come out more, makes it more intense. It's great, but to each their own.

you have a point here man :) it sounds like "In Utero", filthy, raw, unpolished and very very original. but still, it would be great to have it remastered i think. aenima though needs no remastering at all

Undertows recording is excellent. 10,kd has terrible recording, everything is spiked to the max, it is not dynamic at all. terrible.

If anything needs remastering it is Aenima. Drums are too soft on Eulogy and the guitar tones are really muddy. That being said it is still my favorite album, so I can only imagine how sweet it would be with good audio cquality.

There fucking better be. I want all my Tool albums of such a level where the highest peak on the whole album hits THE VERY TOP of the limit, and the rest is 'scaled' to the same volume. I fucking hate how distorted new music albums sound these days...

I always thought the audio quality on Undertow is sublime... Just go compare it to Opiate or AEnima and you'll hear that there is much more clarity in Undertow compared to the other two... but then again I'm listening to it on Vinyl :)

Re: Why hasn't this been remastered yet?

People are stupid if they think Undertow is raw...the drums are heavily treated all over this album (Four Degrees being the most obvious one), the guitars, the vox...everything is treated. It's not raw sounding to me at all. It is muddy though when the band kicks in and Adam's guitar and Danny's cymbals just kind of become one hiss.

Still love the way it's produced over 10k Days, which is a terrible mix...

Raw is not nearly the same thing as "no effects, it was put straight to tape." If you read that, maybe you're the stupid one :P

And maybe you want to upgrade your speakers when the guitar and cymbals become "one hiss". Either you're making that up (no song listed?) or your speakers are indeed fooling your ears...

Bass is too loud? Go listen to AEnima or Lateralus, where you can hardly hear it at all in comparison. I think this album really does the bass justice. Paul D'Amour originally wanted to be the guitarist in the band so since he was stuck on bass he decided to voice himself loud and proud through his pissed off tone on his Ric and you just can't help but admire something like that in a musician. After Paul left and became Lusk and now Feersum Ennjin (a band which kicks ass btw), it's easy to tell why he was no longer a part of Tool post AEnima.
