Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

We know the next tour will be filled with phenomenal new material, but will they fill in with rarely played older songs or the usuals? Either way is fine with me but, of course I would love to hear some reflection, triad, opiate, you lied and I will always enjoy Maynard's dick.

I think we all know deep down the next tour will be new tracks plus Stinkfist, Jambi, 46 & 2, Aenima, Lateralus & Schism

Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

eulogy (would be an appropriate opener considering how they've been opening recent tours)
jambi
stinkfist
parabol/a
schism
right in two
flood
h
lateralus
aenima
third eye

edit: we all know it wont happen since there will be new songs out to be played, but if there was a spring/summer 2012 tour, this setlist would be fantastic as they finalize the new album....

I'm holding out the hope for the rare songs combined with new material. Maybe I'm just a naive optimist.

I don't know how many of these I've done, but this is what I'd go with right now.

Flood
Jambi
EBA/The Patient
Swamp Song
H
Third Eye
Intension/Right In Two
Cold and Ugly

D/R/T

Reading this makes me feel pretty fortunate to have seen alot of these songs. I would have to add Eulogy to the list also, that song is one of the all-time greats for me.

Tomahawk opened the summer of '02, and in Boston Mike Patton joined the band onstage and played a synth (?) for Triad. It was pretty cool seeing my favorite singer ever join one of my favorite bands ever on stage for a jam, definitely a special moment for me as a music fan.

Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

I do enjoy the set list fretting well before the tour even starts.

The thing is we have no idea. I'm still pulling for a double album played in it's entirety with no older songs.

I would love a double album. I would also love a tour where new material was played along with an old album played in its entirety. Like how Primus did with Sailing the Sea ocf Cheese and Frizzle Fry only Tool can do that with Undertow, Aenima and Lateralus.

NO fucking shite right?! I would not mind paying up to $200 per ticket, face value, directly to the band if that became their mantra from here on out!

Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

Sadly, given Maynard's frequent comments before, during, after shows... Tool is not a band I see doing the whole "here's an old album in its entirety" thing. Then again, that APC tour did happen.

I think we'd all pay through the nose to see Lateralus front-to-back plus an "encore" or a couple older classics. Won't happen though.

When I saw all three nights of A Perfect Circle at the Fillmore in San Francisco , 2 out of the 3 shows Maynard commented how he playing these albums in their entirety was "not the best idea I've had". SO it seems unlikely that that kind of thing will happen again. Although maybe he was referring to the fact that they played ALL their songs over a 3 night span, which means the rehearsals must have been intense for the band to learn and relearn everything. I saw Puscifer last winter and (spoiler alert!) they played their entire new album, but not in order, just was in the set with older songs in between. So who knows

Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

So, with NIN announcing that they'll be back touring this year through next, what are the odds both NIN and Tool will play the same event at some time in late 2013 early 2014?

Yeah, yeah, sonnyboy, I know you saw them both in Austria or whatever. And, yes, I'm still jealous about it.

Whoops, meant to put that in the general thread.

As far as setlists go, trilogy or bust.

Yes, and here as well. I'll probably write up a proper review after the tour has finished (just trying to avoid spoilers for those trying to keep a lid on things).

Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

What a surprise.

Tool releases an overpriced "limited edition" version of the Opiate EP-Goes on tour and plays it live.

So much for the "oh they are over that period" argument regarding setlists with the failures to play anything off of Opiate or Undertow (minus Sober).

Yep. Send more money kids.

When did they say that? I've seen Tool five times since 2007 and I've seen them play Opiate, Sober, Intolerance Swamp Song and Flood.

Spiral Out.

Tool didn't say that-The fans here did claiming they moved on from playing songs from Opiate in particular.

And they have the gall to ask for what $500 or something for VIP passes? Wow. Point is Tool is just fleecing the hell out of the fans. Barely 90 minutes on stage, playing the "hits" primarily over and failing to do the most simple thing-put out new material will eventually cost them its fanbase.

Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

Multiple sold out shows across Australia and New Zealand says the fanbase is still quite happy to fork out over $130 AUSD to see them play those shows (which, I should add, have all been pretty damn rapturously received thus far, a handful of unhappy internet reviews aside)

If you find their conduct is diminishing your fanship of the band, that's a shame. We've all been there with various bands over the years.

Me, I'm happy to pay the money I paid to fly over Australia to see the shows I saw, and I'm happy to keep waiting until the next album is ready for release. But that's me, and I claim only to speak for myself.

Fair enough, I interpreted your post as though the band said that. I agree the argument that Tool never change setlists or play old stuff is invalid. I think most us agree that it'd be nice if they changed more than just one song a night in the setlist.

Barely 90 minutes isn't really accurate - the show I went to was just under 2 hours long and that was one song short of a few of the other shows.

I agree that $500 is more than I'd be willing to pay for VIP, but I've spoken to many who attended the event and said it was excellent. I doubt any of them feel like they've been exploited.

Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

Again. Tool is a delicacy at this point, and should be treated as such. It's not 2001 anymore. They don't have to book, or perform for that matter, so aggressively. When they come around, you're gonna pay. Bottom line.

The prime of a band's career is not a watermark that needs to be reached perpetually. If you didn't get so see the band '97-2002.. That's unfortunate. I never got to see Pink Floyd. Them's the breaks.

And as far as 90 minutes sets of "hits" go. They don't have "hits". They play their most indentifiable songs because that's what you do when you're so big you play arenas. People on message boards that post setlists are a miniscule miniscule % of people that attend these shows. There's 40K members here, the premier Tool fan forum for over a decade. Tool has sold 13 million records.

99.99999999% of concert attendees are surprised. Every time.

Can't please 'em all.

They'll put out a new record out eventually. At their own pace. Their longevity is predicated on being on no ones time but their own.

It'll be worth it. Always was and always will be.

Re: 2012 Tour Setlist Discussion

^It was just so good to hear Adam say in the VIP meet & greet that they have got about 10 songs for the new album and about 18-20 "pieces" of music overall which they might use. Just hearing it directly from him 2 metres in front of me will keep me happy for the next 6 to 12 months or however long they take to record their next album.

Also, he gave away a few little bits e.g. he says he likes the James Bond movie 'The Man With The Golden Gun' (don't watch it - terrible Bond movie). The bad guy, Francisco Scaramanga, introduces himself by saying the 'Francisco' in a deep, drawn out way. Adam, for some reason, always liked how the actor stretched out the 'cisco' bit so Adam used that as the voice you hear on 'Viginti Tres', the last track on 10,000 days. He stretched it out even further using an old piece of equipment similar to what NASA used back in the 1970s. He said their machines made sounds that he had never heard before from any other piece of musical equipment. He thought it was cool so he put it on the album...

Anyway, May 2014 could be when their next record comes out. I don't mind waiting.

My point here is they repeatedly playing the same songs.. over. and over. and over. Would you walk away from a TOOL concert if they did this:

Didn't play Lateralus=Played Swamp Song instead
Didnt' Play 46-2-Played Prison Sex instead
Didn't Play Jambi-Played Eulogy
Didn't Play Pushit-Played H instead

My argument that the band cashes in a lot of money for a short setlist remains. They play 1.5-2 hours at most. A second and more important note is they released an expensive re-release of Opiate.. goes on tour.. and PLAYS OPIATE ON TOUR. If you cannot see through that.. Sorry. Your just too in love with Tool and you're a homer.

Homer may be an accurate statement and it may not be. Keep in mind though that the expensive reissue of Opiate sold out very fast. So a lot of people don't mind paying the prices for something that they value. You may value it as much of others and that is ok. I know if people were willing to pay me tons of money for something that I created I would definitely take the money. "Send more money......"

Perfect setlist! :D
I would trade out Wings/10,000 days with Intension/Right In Two. Just for the fact that I have not seen Right In Two live and that is one of my favorite songs on the album.

For sure....Of course I wish they would play some different songs.....mainly because I see them 4 or 5 times when they go on tour......We could all bitch about the song selections, but the point is, that they put on one of the best Shows on the Planet. I'll gladly pay whatever the fuck they ask for to see even a mediocre TooL perfromance, because it's still better than 90% of the bands out there.

Spiral Out.
there is a seed of truth here. I believe it was in the REVOLVER special all-Tool edition somewhere… maybe in Blood into Wine...i believe it was maynard talking about music being like therapy and if you've spent 10 years screaming about the same things and you haven't been able to grow and move through those bad emotions, then obviously music isn't working for you, and if it is working for you than it should grow and evolve with you. Of course i am paraphrasing and what was said was rather non-specific, but i interpreted it in the same way figuring that was a GREAT excuse for not playing certain songs.

The best part of when I saw Right in Two was screaming out "Timmmaaayyyy" at the proper time and seeing/hearing other toolheads do it too. That was sweet.

If you never did see Wings performed, it was one of the most emotional/uplifting/OMG musical journeys the band did. Of course the topic of the song lends itself to having a religious experience. I saw the debut of it in LA (both nights) and it is one of the highlights of my Tool career. Big props to Junior, he kicked major ass with that one!
