Reaching Outward for Inner _____.

Instead of trying to formulate an expansive exhaustive theory to how everything in the work ties together I'm only focusing on the three tentacled eye and the parasite.

Because Vicarious is at the beginning of the album, and this is based on how TooL progression seems to flow, I feel like the atmosphere of this song/video is also the beginning of a spiritual evolutionary process. With TooL, it seems like this is the grand quest that we all are innately a part of since birth. And, one of the most important tools of this quest is perception (since it is something that shapes itself continuously and both consciously & unconsciously).

Reference Definition (as seemingly used through the song) : experienced or realized through imaginative or sympathetic participation in the experience of another

So, the founding perception of this song seems to be that we are living through someone else's eyes -> living through someone else's life-> living someone else's life. The significance of this is easily grasp if you were trying to wear someone else's shoes or glasses. This simplicity in this is so silly and stupid it's easy to overlook. But, I'm sure if you take a step back and find yourself looking through unfiltered/objective/unbiased eye's you'll find yourself surrounded by people trying to fit inside a framed life that was built by/for someone else. But, we see it so often we are desensitized to it and often blind to it. The neat thing about the eye is that if it stares at something to long it's negative completely neutralizes the image. The same thing happens to us unconsciously.

All of us have been born into a culture that already has an instituted interpretation of what righteousness means and how we can go about living out that ideal. Hence, we are also born into a life where the term 'role model' and 'ideal human' have been objectively defined. This is the locust/parasite in the video.

Many people often repress parts of their personality because they are in some manner striving for this rigid state of being because they have been programmed to believe that it will bring them some form of external divinity and salvation. The argumentis that these mannerism will bring about the end to all of our worldly problems and remove many of the barriers of our mortal lives, such as overpopulation, famine, ignorance, bigotry, violence, greed, generalized fears & insecurities, and apathy all the while establishing and promoting friendship, good health, and a since of purpose and well being.
That is at best. The truth is that it gives very mixed results across the board and signicantly represses some essential/fundemental aspsect of nearly all individuals. NEARLY ALL INDIVIDUALS. This is the Three Tentacled Eye in the video.

I feel like this concept is validated by the scene where the parasite "births" the eye, the eye floats to where the third eye is often depicted on the forehead, and drifts off to become the gigantic three tentacled beast that stirs up dust clouds and eventually knocks the subject on his back.

In short, looking for salvation outside yourself will only create problems.

...then the parasite burns up and the eye stops functioning when the subject activates their inner source or some shit like that.

OP's aside:The thing that pisses me off about TooL vids and songs is that the '(re)solution' part of their work is usually under a minute in songs that are 7mins+. Life is not like that. The solutions to our psychic problems often span our whole lives (which many of us never achieve), then we lose bodily function, and go right back into the ground...and the sun keeps burning and the world keeps turning.
