i dont go to this site much so someone may have already discovered what i have and if so then this post should be removed.
awhile ago i was searching the net for those songs with hidden lyrics when played in reverse like stairway to heaven, another one bites the dust, and theres a song on the wall i forget the name but alot of artist seem to do this stuff and i thought i might as well see if tool has since they all about hidden meanings and what not.
my first test was on the track lateralis since maynard does the fibonacci buisness. i've reversed the whole lateralus album and lateralis is the only track in which i've found an interesting little something. at the end when maynard sings "spiral out, keep going, spiral out..." a few times, when played in reverse, I can still hear him say "spiral out" four times, its quite clear, sounds a little wierd obviously because it in reverse but i think it definately clear.
heres the link to a sound clip that i made. it first plays the section forward then reverses it. let me know what you think and do your own research on thier other other albums, there may be more, i'm too lazy to check.
ya i just think its interesting that its in the same place and says the same thing. i've heard alot of other examples of so called reverse messages and what not and they suck compared to this. i agree though, its not as clear as it is forward. thanks for the comments.
That is definitely intentional... that's as clear as any reverse lyrics I've ever heard (at least among those that can't be heard played forward).
Going all the way back to high school, I remember the song "Pry, to" on pearl jam's vitalogy says "pete townsend oh you saved my life" when you play it backwards. It's about as clear as "spiral out," but that kind of thing doesn't happen by accident.
this is going to take a while, but for the benefit of me and others i will take every tool song and reverse it tonight for you guys and anything that i find i will take down the song note where in the song to is and what is being herd...

... Are you kidding me? People still try this "Play it backward!" stuff?
Wow.
If artists are still going through the effort to produce backwards phrases, why wouldn't the fans attempt to find them? If you think this wasn't intentional, then, well, think harder.
Here's a technical site dedicated to backwards masking. There are accidental ones, and there are masked engineered tracks that are "bare to the naked ear" when played.
The main reason i wanted to post this is because it's the only time i've heard the same thing in both directions. i kind of have an idea of how one would go about making a hidden message when played in reverse but to make it say the same thing sounds really hard. its not like those words racecar that are the same spelled backward, its has to be the same when pronouced in reverse and although i belive this was intentional, it seems hard as hell to achieve.
It is FUN!...who cares if it is intentional or accidental or just a mind game...it's FUN! and INTRIGUING! :D:D:D
Thanks for the post! :)

nkazoura,thanks for the tip!
quite interesting, another point to look out for in tool's wonderland.
by the way, this is maybe (though it's a really hard judgement to make) tool's most beautiful song.

one thing i do know is that if you really turn it up during the slow part you can hear "step out" repeated in the background. for example "embrace my desire to step out step out step out" check it out.
