Re: !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!
That's seriously an amazing find. Bravo, man.
It's almost frightening to hear how similar the instrumentals are.
I might just save this to my iTunes library and tag it as Reflection (Reverse). How sick is that? It's just as awesome backward as it is front. Only Tool...
edit -- I just played a bootleg backwards, and the instrumentals sound more in-check than the studio version! mind = blown.

whoa...that just tripped me out, i found myself kind of hypnotized by it about half way through. i can't make any words out though, but maynard sounds like he's singing some indian tribal song or something. that's insane how similiar it sounds instrumentaly, that's freaking awesome...it's like a new tool song for me...thanks

The reason this is sounds so much alike played backwards and forwards is because this song was made using the fibonnacci sequence, (a series of numbers in which the next number is the sum of the previous two) ie this number sequence: 1 1 2 3 5 8. This song uses that formula backwards and forwards ie: 1 1 2 3 5 8 5 3 2 1 1, the numbers being the syllables in the way lyrics sung, drums are beat, and guitar is played. Also seen in Lateralus with the lyrics "black, then, white are, all I see, in my in-fan-cy, red and yell-ow then came to be, reach-ing out to me, lets me see 1 1 2 3 5 8 5 3.

so thats why the lyrics sounded very similar backwards!
Re: !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!
yea I always wondered about that reverse re verb thing he used. But I never thought of reversing the song. Good thinking. I'll listen to the version you posted today.
Re: !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!
So, the vocals to reflection have always struck me as weird. When I first heard it, I thought they were all mashed up, the individual words or phrases were recorded at different times, and then put together roughly. Then I heard about the reversal idea, and it was then that I thought maybe the vocals are recorded in reverse. This is not to difficult to do on a basic level, but obviously a lot of time would have gone into the recording of this song. When I got round to reversing it myself, it was difficult to make out the vocals very clearly because of all the reversed music going on around it. But having reversed some other Tool songs, (Schism, Parabola, Lateralus and H.), the vocals do sound cleaner. So my theory is that some, if not all, the vocals were recorded in reverse.
Re: !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!
Some of the words in the first (last part of the original song) actually come out very clearly in reverse, like the original poster says. I hear "foolish" quite clearly and "save" and "live". But I cant really make out any direct meaning for myself. Mayve its just coincidence. Or a very subliminal message. I want to listen to this next time I do shrooms, heh. Its a very interesting idea, sounds great backwards. Like alot said, especially the start... totally chaotic.
Re: !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!
have to agree with just about everything, quite an awesome discovery and I wouldn't ever put it past TOOL to make a song that sounds 'normal' backwards. Really liked this...
Re: !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!
It could work, it has a "Reverse" feature, but im not sure how to get the actual song file to the recorder thing. I'm trying to get it from windows media player but that apparently not working

The windows sound recorder app only reads .waw files.
You need a converter... ill edit and paste a link if I get the time.
Re: !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!
You can also change the soundinput(or output? always muddle them up.) from "microphone" to "stereo mix" so it records what you hear. Then you can record the normal Reflection and after you've recorded it just play it backwards.

What you need is Audacity. It can be downloaded for free at:

Re: !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!
I don't think this is an awesome find. It's rather nothing, rubbish, garbage. I've got no keen observations when it comes to music and I have always thought of putting this song backwards. Did I do it? No. Why? Because I knew the reward of doing so would not be worthy of the effort.
So big fucking deal you've got some jumbled lyrics and the song sounds sort of similar to it played normally. It's merely a coincidence and if not--it still isn't interesting. I can flip my avatar in photoshop and while it will sort of look alike, it won't be the same. Amazing? No.

This isn't either.
Waste.
Of.
Time.
