Somebody over on fourtheye had an interesting thought about it.
Maybe they are going to do one of those Pearl Jam, Big Four or U2-like Concerts with Theater simulcasts in various cities. Blair does seem to mention just about every place in the world as a possibility for the "Winter Tour."
Then again, that would be way to easy to record... So I'd say chances are pretty slim.
But, I thought the chances of them actually being on Guitar Hero were pretty slim too.

While it seems unlikely, that is an interesting thought.
Though I think that any performance by Tool shown in an movie theater would be prerecorded with heavy editing. Perhaps an Imax 3D experience...

This news isn't suprising in the sense that Maynard has given signals that he wants to change the way he tours. Its possible we will see tours announced more frequently, but with fewer dates.

Of all things TOOL in my life, this is hte single most surprising thing I have ever witnessed. I came to work today and found out Puscifer is doing a tour in feb-march. Obviously this rules out Tool for a while, right? WRONG.
17th and 18th of January. Puscifer starts Feb 23rd.
This leaves enough time for a 3 week tour? Does that sound reasonable to everyone?
The last TOOL tour was west coast only so chances are they may swing east?
Possibilities:
-California (maybe twice or x3) = 100% for sure
-Texas (x2) = 100% i'd say
-NOLA again?
-Kansas/Tennessee/Middle of USA area
-East coast.... Atlanta/Virginia/DC/Charlotte/NYC/Boston (2-3 of these)
-TORONTO?! (please?)
-Montreal and/or ottawa/Kingston?
-Cincinnati/Colombus/Detroit/Cleveland
All of the above are very good possibilities if my assumption is correct. I cannot see them doing west coast only 2 tours in a row. plus 3-4 weeks seems like enough time in between tours, and enough to cover all or most of the above cities.

Definitely a short tour, my source tells me no dates later than the 18th of February (though that won't necessarily be a date on the tour.), and that the ones announced are most likely the first two dates.
Also hinted that Tool should be playing some different material this time around.
Im pissed enough that I missed the 2010 tour... I will fly to see one of these shows this time around.... just hoping that I can walk a few blocks from my apartment instead... living in Philly now a days... which gives me easy access to DC, Philly, NYC, and Boston shows should they be gracious enough to head east

Did your source mention anything about Coachella by chance?

Kanundah, even more surprising than when they opened with Triple Optical?
I'm not trying to pick on you, but it's pretty funny that you say how surprised you are an then immediately try to predict an entire tour.
I'm not that surprised considering Blair basically said it in the news letter.
Does different material mean new material, or just different material?
As at the beginning of every new tour, I will say a quiet prayer of desperation, pleading to hear Distance x Rate = Time live one more time in my life.

Heh, the date predictions is just purely my speculation based on the timeline of the tour and the fact that the last tour was only west coast.
Regards to being surprised about the tour - absolutely there is no way anyone saw this coming! Considering that the SAME DAY we found out about Puscifer tour for Feb-March... I'm sure not a single soul would have predicted a remote possibility of anything Tool (let alone a tour) in the small gap in between christmas and puscifer. The past few years they seem to be full of surprises. Fuck yes.

It's pretty much confirmed Tool is playing Dallas.
The big radio station here has been playing a concert announcement teaser for monday with Tool playing behind it.
No mention of Coachella, seems unlikely at this stage I'd say.
Why do you say that? Coachella announces the line up in their own time. It wouldn't be Tool's call. Considering recent events, I'd say the odds Tool headlines at Coachella in '12 just went up from non-existent to highly-likely.

I keep hearing No Doubt, Radiohead and fingers crossed The Stone Roses.

I see Stone Roses there too. In fact, an all Brit reunion night is not outta the question. Rumor mill at the Coachella forums has SR and maybe Pulp? That works for me! The real deal would be a Spacemen 3 reunion. I can dream, can't I?
I've also heard the Radiohead, No Doubt rumors. Look, maybe true. But if Tool is available and wants to do it, GV will make it happen. 6 years now since they were last there debuting new material.

Do Americans really give a shit about that much British music?
On the balance, I like more British bands than I do American bands. Always have.
But yea, when a band like Stone Roses comes here, they'll go from playing arenas to playing a place maybe the size of the Greek Theater... unless they play a festival like Coachella.
I wish I could could get a bit more excited about the Stone Roses reunion. Their first record is a masterpiece. Problem is, I saw them last time they were in Los Angeles. Ian Brown was awful.
I'm really glad that they are going to come to Atlanta. It's unfortunate that I hear less-than-stellar things about that venue, but I'm sure they will be great.
Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful that we have any shows to attend at all, but they certainly don't make it easy on us, do they?
Anyone think they can summon Junior from the dead? We need inside information. I doubt he could give us cities on the tour even if he knew them, though. Good luck, everyone.
I said what's up to Junior at the Puscifer show on Saturday. He killed it per-usual.
I tried to pry any possible info out of him, but he said he didn't know anything yet.

To be fair, a lot of bands are doing shit like this these days. Radiohead's recent tour onsale dates and presales were very short notice and deliberately without much detail. And the NY shows they did recently only had like two days notice before tickets went onsale.
