I skimmed through and don't know if this has been mentioned, sorry if it has. But what about "Cutting all i know right in two"? I hear this in a few of the times he says it. I definitely can't hear "Gotta", I definitely hear the C sound. I also can't hear divide either.

It seems to me that the lyrics of Right In Two consist of the words, "Cut and Divide it all right in two," as opposed to the other ideas that show up on the lyrics page.

My initial thought after hearing the song and listening to the lyrics was that "right in two", and all of the cut and divide business had to do with reproduction.

Either that or "Gotta divide it all right in two." Either way the posted lyrics are not correct.

and ive managed to narrow it down to
"gotta divide it all right in two" (about 2/3rds of the time i hear this distinctly)
"cuuuuuuuuut it all right in two" (i hear once per time through the chorus)
and
"cut and divide it all right in two" (which i hear almost at random points)
all 3 are close enough for me to sing along to the song and all 3 have pretty much the same meaning so were really splitting hairs from this point forward.
once the man himself prints out the lyrics well know for sure... until then any of these variations is fine.

While I have not posted anything as yet, I feel the lyrics to this song are somewhat in dispute even up until now. I spent quite a bit of time when the album first came out, coming up with various propositions as to the lyrical content/meaning of this song.
The song's obvious meaning (to me) is that as humans, we have it in our nature to want what others have. This directly addresses the deadly sin of Envy. It's possibly come as a result of the war on Iraq, as it has directly affected many of us here in this country. However, the issue is global and not to be listened to only in a time of American strife or war.
Since the evolution of the opposable thumb, we have dealt with intelligence, strength, and many other factors playing a part in the "dominance of our species."
Here is my interpretation of the lyrics, keeping in mind the MEANING behind them, and what the singer might have actually WANTED to say and for others to hear in his song:
Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.
Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden.
Silly old monkeys
Where there's one you're bound to divide it
Right in two.
Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason,
And this is what they choose?
Monkey killin monkey killin monkey
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs they forge a blade,
And where there's one they're bound to divide it,
Right in two.
Right in two.
Monkey killin monkey killin monkey
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs they make a club,
And beat their brother down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability,
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.
Cut and divide it all right in two.
Cut and divide it all right in two.
Cut and divide it all right in two.
Cut and divide it all right in two.
Fight til they die, over earth, over sky.
They fight over life, over blood, over the air,
And life over love, over some, over none,
They fight til they die, over what?
For their rising.
Angels on the sideline again
Benched along with patience and reason
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering when this tug of war will end
Cut and divide it all right in two.
Cut and divide it all right in two.
Cut and divide it all right in two.
Right in two
Right in two
I in no way think these lyrics are 100% correct. I do feel they are one of the best versions available and I have spent a great deal of time on them.
Any feedback and other interpreations are appreciated.
Thanks,
Chad

Chad,
good job.
In the "benched along" part I was tempted to go for something like "pendulum with patience and reason...". But I have to admit "benched along" works better.
I think this is as close as anyone could get absent the real deal being released by the Man himself.

Chad,
did you have a stab at decyphering lyrics to other songs as well? I'd very much appreciate your insight on some parts of Jambi. There are several loose ends there that need tying up, most notably the final two verses and the verse immediately following after "compromise our fulcrum".
Thnx

I actually do have other songs I have spent quite a bit of time on. I've been a strong follower for quite some time, and typically can figure out what Maynard is saying in most instances. Sometimes with help, sometimes without. I generally cull all the ideas, and then come up with a final version. One the makes sense and sounds good with the vocals we have.
For Jambi, this is what I have at this moment. I am less sure on this song than some others. The Pot I think is also my other weak point on the album lyrically. I just don't buy into "Got lemon juice up in your eye" even if it is.
JAMBI
Here from the king's mountain view.
Here from the wIld dream come true.
Feast lIke a sultan I do.
On treasures and flesh never few.
But I.
I would.
Wish it all away.
If I thought I'd lose you just one day
The devil and his had me down.
In love with the dark side I'd found.
Dabblin' all the way down.
Up to my neck soon to drown.
But you changed that all for me,
Lifted me up turned me around.
So I. I. I. I.
I would, I would, I would
wish this all away.
Prayed like a martyr dusk to dawn.
Begged like a hooker all night long.
Tempted the devil with my song.
And got what I wanted all along.
But I, I would, If I could, I would.
Wish it away.
Wish it away.
Wish it all away.
Wanna wish it all away.
No price you could hold; sway.
Or justify my, kneeling awake, my sinner.
So If I could I'd wish it all away.
If I thought tomorrow would take you away.
You're my piece of my mind, my own,
I said I'm just trying to hold on, one more day.
Damn my eyes!
Jambi!
Damn my eyes!
If they should compromise our fulcrum.
Watching me divide me,
Then I might as well be gone.
Shine on forever.
Shine on benevolent son.
Shine down upon the broken.
Shine until the two become one.
Shine on forever.
Shine on benevolent son.
Shine down upon the severed.
Shine until the two become one.
Divided I'm withering away.
Divided I'm withering away.
Shine down upon the many, light our way.
Benevolent son.
Breathe in union.
Breathe in union.
Breathe in union.
Breathe in union.
Breathe in union.
So, as one, survive.
Another day and season.
Silently just save your poison.
Silently just stay out of my way.
"Watching me divide me, then I might as well be gone"
Followed later in the song by:
"Divided I'm withering away"
These two lyrics make sense together and also sound the most accurate in conjunction with the song. I am sketchy on a few parts of this song but feel these lyrics hold up to some of the better versions out there.

Maybe it's like this...
Angels on the sideline again,
Bench all love and patience and reason.
Angels on the sideline again,
Wondering where this tug of war will end.
if you match verb tense, "...benching love and patience and reason..."
As much as he's commenting on our nature (be it envy, greed, or any other shortcoming), he obviously has a thing or two to say about the logic of CREATING beings with that nature (sidlining [perhaps love,] patience and reason).
Also I think "right" may have a dual use in the song. Personally I think the entire song is directed at the Israel/Palestine conflict as much as it is anything. In that case, both groups feel they have an entitlement or "right" to the "holy land."
Early in the song, he clerarly says, "where there's one [territory, country, holy land] they're bound to diviDe..... A right [or entitlement to the land] in two [because they both believe they have an entitlement!] (not: "divide IT...right in two")
At the end of the song, because of the miguided, impatient, two-sided blunder (or tug of war), I belive he's wishing /praying ("lift[ing] an eye to heaven") for good, patient, reasonable thought, perhaps even love for a brother of mankind, to come to the forefront in the thoughts of men on both sides.
I hear "Guide, Light all Right, in two", or "God, light all [that is]right- in two," that is reveal what is good and just, on both parts. It may just be because of how I am interpreting it, but I hear that , mostly guide (over God), but he may interchange them as sometimes i can't decide... oh well. Makes sense to me. Does anyone else hear that, and which one?
I'm fairly sure about the dual use of "Right", and that it isn't used to mean "Exactly," at all.

I'm fairly sure about the dual use of "Right", and that it isn't used to mean "Exactly," at all.

it's most likely "cutting our love..." but the vvvv is very hard to distinguish, i think. the last time he yells it i think is the easiest way to hear it...
damn now i kinda agree that it also sounds like "gotta divide it all..." or "cut and divide it all..."
yeah we're totally splitting hairs, i give up

Well I got this CD about a week ago, and the mysterious chorus lyrics now sound like "Cut my love right in two." Now, I don't know if anyone if familiar with the story of Solomon. It goes a little something like this. Solomon was the wisest man in town, so naturally people go to him for help in resolving their differences. One day, two women come to him, each claiming (from what i can remember) to be the mother of two children. Solomon's proposal is to give each woman one child. One mother protests, saying that she would give the other child so that the two children can be together. From this, Solomon determines that she is the real mother. Interpretation of this significance should be left to another thread, but those are the lyrics I hear, and it makes perfect sense when you think about the story of Solomon.

It was one kid, and he said to cut the child in half and give each mother a half. One woman said no, she couldn't bear to see the child killed, and from that he determined that that woman was the true mother...

It wouldn't surprise me if Maynard intentionally inserted a few inaudible lyrics into the album to play with the fans' heads a little bit.

yes, i have been pondering the chorus also. i do not hear 'cutting it all' prior to 'right in two'. m does annunicate some words different than they appear in written form. a good example on 10kd is in the pot...he doesn't say the two words 'black kettle', he instead says one word 'bla-kettle'. does this make any sense? perhpas the vicadin is playing tricks on my communication skills.

Cutting my love right in two
Cutting my love right in two
Cutting my love right in two
Right in two
Right in two
That's how I hear it. It seems to me like this song is written from the perspective of these "sidelined angels-" except for this reprieve. This seems to me to be directly from the aforementioned "father" who "gave [us] humans free will . . ." and "blessed [us] all with reason." I think that is why the vocals are shrouded in that delay/echo effect- almost like they are intentionally making it harder for us to hear the voice of creation.

cut my own is also an interesting one
i think these three are the best poissiblities:
cut my own right in two
cut my home right in two
cut my love right in two
maybe he says all three, who knows, but i can hear any of them, if not all
