If so, I think I remember what it looks like, and I remember Filter playing there, but I don't remember anything specific about the show.
I (reluctantly) admit to going to see Hootie there back in the day, but like the guy above posted, I don't think they got their start there. Hootie did play there from time to time, but it was more of a "metal" venue (I swear).

Junior,
Did you do the Filter tour when they opened for White Zombie? What a show it 'twas! I saw the one at Salt Air; I was a junior in high school and I was a HUGE Filter fan when short bus came out. "Watch your back, I've got mine....!!!" I think that was right before I saw tool fo the first time ever at Salt Air, with MJK painted blue.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
I went to Target (3 different stores), Barnes and Noble, Borders all around So Cal and I didnt find the magazine!!!
WTF???!!!

I seem to remember White Zombie/Filter doing 2 nights at Salt Air. I remember it was really hot in there and Seana (from Zombie) got hit in the head with a boot. She nearly got knocked out, and kept playing in a daze for the rest of the show, occasionally going behind her bass rig to get her pupils checked by the doctor on call. Rob Zombie didn't see her get hit by the boot and thought she was just being lame. He announced to the crowd that they were witnessing White Zombie's final show and they were breaking up. They didn't that night, but did by the end of the year.
Those shows were in February or March of 1996, I think, and the Tool show was in November of 1996.

As I. Haven't been that captivated with reading material in quite some time. You know...the can't put it down mode...good thing I'm not in college or anything...hehe...
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
Anyone else read the April 2008 newsletter?
First time in awhile it's actually worth the read. Blair hints that tool is seriously considering doing something that he, (and the fans) would never suspect they would do.
After a couple reads, my best guess is "promoting a product." Of course, it should be noted that I also predicted "The Pot" dvd would be released alongside the Revolver issue...
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
The Revolver thing is cool. Definetly read some stuff I've never heard before. Also, upon a re-read of all the original articles from Spin, Revolver, and whatever else with the coinciding records, I noticed how much fucking misinformation they print. The one article starts off by mentioning 10k Days will be "their first official release since 'Lateralus' in 2002*". Simple mistake, okay fine. Not when you're talking about Tool though.
What really drove me nuts though is the attempt to sound so descriptively clever when refering to the music. The one article gives a whole bunch of jibber jabber about how the mix on 10K Days is so dense and huge, it's hard to decifer drums from bass from guitars. Actually a pretty fair assesment. Than cites Lipan Conjuring and Intension as examples of this. Hello, did ya listen to the fuckin record? The other funny one was something about Danny's clever use of electronic samples in the song Lateralus. I think Lateralus is one of only 2 songs on Lateralus that features NO SAMPLING (if you dont count the wooshing loop at the beginning of the song).
The Alex Grey piece was cool. He seems like such a gracious dude. I really like that the band didnt allow him to see the summer '02 stage set until the Radio City show.
*Edit- And before someone says it, I doubt they were counting the singles. They meant Lateralus, for sure.

I was extremely fascinated by reading what the guys said about the creative process. I've always listened to what they said about compromise, but never realized exactly how much strife and friction is going on when developing their music. It makes me appreciate their work so much more knowing what it takes to get it out.

Good read for sure.
It's nice to be reminded every so often that they are just a rock band. After an album cycle where they've built themselves up to be a behemoth package with an epic album and live show that grows in spectacle with each ensuing leg, they need to start from scratch in a small room with a guitar, bass, and drums.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
Junior,
1996, those were some good times. It is amazing how many times we've crossed paths. RATM in Spanish fork, Filter, Tool (at least 5 times) and probably more. Why didn't Filter work out after short bus? That was an album that I could put on and love every song. Forgive me if my question sounds stupid, because many bands never make a good sophmore album but Filter just had so much energy at their show and a great release I thought they would go on.

I've been to Barnes and Noble, 3 different grocery stores, 2 news shops, and Borders Books and I still haven't found the magazine yet either. WTF?!? Where are you guys finding the new Revolver mag?

If they dont have Revolver at Barnes, then they must be sold out at your location. I picked up my copy at Hastings, which isnt a very big chain at all. So if Barnes AND Borders both dont have it, you should ask if they have any more copies in back or something. Just doesnt make much sense that they wouldnt carry Revolver.

I'm not sure. I know that when I've done stuff for "industry" magazines I've almost always been allowed to proof-read before they publish, but I hear that's normally not the case with "rock" magazines. Being that Tool like to be in control of most situations, I would find it hard to believe that they would agree to do this magazine without some kind of "final cut" clause, but maybe not.

The "Short Bus" tour went for about a year and a half. Richie and Brian started to suffer from the old "creative differences" that always seem to be the cause of band troubles, and there were also some chemical dependancies starting to form. When they started to work on the next record, it all blew up and that just left Richie. It took him awhile to get it back together, and since Brian had always been the one with the "studio sense" he needed someone to take over that role, which ended up being Geno (who had previously been the touring guitar player and dealt with a lot of the MIDI stuff live).
All in all it took almost 3 years to get the 2nd record done.
By the time the 3rd record came out, the drugs were gaining control and Richie finally did something about it. I'm curious to see how the new one turned out. I've run into Richie at a few shows around LA and he seems to be much clearer, humbler, and optomistic than I'd ever seen him.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
I found my copy of Revolver magazine at Borders on the 5th, there was only one other copy left after I purchased mine so either they didn't get many copies compared to other magazines or they're going fast.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
bought 2 copies last night at borders. Lots of Good stuff! I've read about half the mag and some of the older interviews i had forgotten, so they seem somewhat new.
Junior,
They should had definitely had a longer interview with you, but we already know most of the answers from hanging around here ;P.

Cool Tool edition of Revolver.

I try to keep it mostly to two colors at a time...It keeps the power of what's going on in the moment better if you keep it simpler. It's still bold but simple.
That seems to be the philosophy with their songs too.

I think probably the stupidest thing I could have done on 10,000 Days was put myself out there as much as I did with the tracks "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)." I'll never make that mistake again. It just took too much out of me emotionally, mentally, and physically. It's just too difficult in what I would consider a hostile environment....I don't want to do that anymore.
Ugh, bummer. I'm glad I got to see them perform it a couple times.

Playing "10,000 Days" in concert was very challenging but infinitely rewarding.

i just saw Rush 2 nights at Nokia in LA.
both very good but 2nd night was better
anyway, they're using a similar lighting rig to what tool had last year, especially the UFO style lights that descend from the trusses and focus on the members (specifically alex lifeson). they even had the same small rings illuminated that you may remember from tool's intermission when they would scan the crowd. anyway, have a good weekend

Damn. I wanted to see Rush but I was simply not going to give ticketmaster an almost equal amount of money in surcharges as the ticket was. NO WAY IN HELL. Can we just take these guys out to the gulags or something? They're ruining music...A NPR short from 2006 is really the only thing I've seen/hear challenging them besides Pearl Jam, and that was, what, 15 years ago?

I noticed a few similarities, too.
It probably has something to do with me ripping off (er, being inspired by?) stuff I've seen Rush do over the years. ;)
The 3 rings on this last Tool tour were inspired by a photo I saw from an early eighties Rush tour (Signals, maybe?). Those didn't move, but they kinda looked the same.
Rush's lighting designer (Howard) is a partner in the laser company that Tool uses.
He's been with Rush since about 1972.
I told him I was "borrowing" his ring idea.
Tool did use the lights with the LEDs on the front before Rush did, though (they're called SHOWGUNs).

So, I went to the local FYE (only place in this town to get a rock mag) yesterday in an attempt to locale the new Rvolver magazine. Couldn't find it, so I asked the guy working there with the thin, long goatee and spiked hair if they have any more issues. he says, "I guess not". "It's a Tool exclusive issue, so I am not surprised" was my response. "Oh, I'm not really into Tool any more, since I found out Maynard hates his fans" was the nonsense that I heard next. "You know that song 'Hooker with a Penis' is about his fans, and that's not cool" All I could say was that the song is about a particular fan and that he just does not "get" Maynard. While driving home (mentioned before, there are no other options to buy it in this town) I thought to myself, he really is the fan that Maynard was talking about in 'Hooker...' and I'm glad he has that view point. One less bottom-feeder staying away from the next live show...whenever that will be. Maybe if I can get my hands on this Revolver, it will hint at future plans.

I'm gonna give Junior a break from interrogation and pose this question to anyone who can answer it..
So I was perusing Youtube for video from the first night at Madison Square Garden in October '01, and believe it or fucking not, Youtube offers NOTHING on this gig. Which is semi-suprising.. but.. In my travels I discovered a 3 part series of video called "Tool, In Studio with Sylvia Massey". It was basically 25 minutes of the band fucking around in the studio while making Undertow. Maynard goofing off. Adam designing the sculptures. The shooting of the pianos with shotguns. Basically shit you'd NEVER have access to.
Has anyone else seen this, and I'm just incredibly late to the party.. ?

saw it last year. Pretty cool videos and inside look.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
It sure clears up any miniscule doubts that they are not just another goofy band in the recording studio making records and going through some other-worldy process. Darn. haha.

You are late...there is a whole thread about this somewhere else on t.d.n
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
I read the entire Revolver issue the second I got it. I found the section about the Opiate album really inspiring. They were dead broke when they signed their first record deal, yet they still elected to take less money so that they could make an album without the record company pushing them around and telling them what to do.
I think that's the problem with today's music. Too many bands are being lured into shitty record contracts, and the music is suffering because of it.
