After listening to this song and watching this video for the first time I changed completely as a musician and human being. His drumming is hypnotizing. That's all I can say.
I really like the fact he holds his drumstick under his arm when he picks up the mallet to stricke his gong! and then, without losing tempo, takes his drumstick back again.
Wasn't he using his elbow for that action? I'll have to watch it again...
Allright. This discussion has been around like forever, but here goes:
As a drummer and musician I can tell you, in terms of technique and rhythmic knowledge (as well as applying that to a song).. Tomas Haake > Danny Carey (***). Although, besides technique and stuff, there is also a matter of taste and personal preference when it comes to telling which drummer is "better". It's very subjective. Danny may be a bit more creative with percussion etc, as well as using new (electronic) drums. On the other hand, I think Tomas' kit (especially his snare) sound better compared to Danny's (and by that I look at Meshuggahs Nothing from 2002, and Tools 10,000 days, three years later (better sound-technology)). In the end it's a matter of taste, I think both are awesome drummers.. but still.. check this out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BatXT196-Qw
Tomas Haake is great. But i do have to say (to me) Danny trumps him and Meshuggah in general. I do like Meshuggah though. But i dont see how they are comparobol (I dont know how to spell :S) Tool is too good to be compared to anyone.
I think Danny is one of the most creative drummers, at least in rock. I also think that his drumming is a crucial part of the composition in Tool. I mean, some compositions are based on Danny's drumming. I love seeing him playing, but i wish I could see the whole video. There are so many songs and parts where I'd like to SEE his drumming.

There is definitely no denying that this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing video clips in the history of my eyes, but I would really love to see DC in that polyrhytmic bliss section . . . "Embrace my desire to . . . " --- _ _ _ --- _ _ _ --- _ _ _
<-- Post no. 666. Take that Christ.
I agree...there are much more interesting drum parts in this song.
