Yea, I have had a chance to think about it too and I tend to agree. I think they just took the easy way out and did the same set since that represented the easiest path. Not that they didn't play brilliantly- they nailed it! Man, to be honest, I am gonna have to reevaluate my 'top shows' for this tour after that second night in Vegas. The only thing not making it the best show of the tour is the fact that they played the exact same set list... even Aenema would have been a nice addition. How a band can play the same songs night in and night out and make it sound as good as Tool does, I'll never know.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Just got back home from Vegas an hour ago. I will post my full review sometime tomorrow. I was in the pit, about 4 rows back from the stage on Adams side(about the same distance of when i saw them there at the Pearl back in April, but on Justin's side). I love my new shirt.

Justin did drink 2 Stellas. Maynard did say this is the last song, of the last show, of this tour (or how ever everybody else is saying) but yea i strongly believe they are done touring for 10k Days album. Adam did crack a smile and nodding his head a few times. He was an amazement all night. And Danny was f-ing intense!!!

I really hope they do the NZ / Australia tour. BDO just wasn't enough to satisfy the craving...

i'm hoping for a Euro tour in 2008. During their last visit in summer 2007, MJK said "we'll see you again very very soon" so let's hope they do

Agreed. If they'd have ended with Aenema on Friday it would have been a top fiver for me. Ending with Vicarious just never sat right with me on this tour. Seems like more of an opener than a closer. Lateralus=great show closer.
Opiate>Flood>Aenema in 1998=greatest show close ever.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

All in all the 10000 Days tour was great!!!

All the Tool tours I've seen had positives/negatives. Tool is not washed up as some have said. I thought the Aenima tour killed the Lateralus tour. I thought the 10000 Days tour was better too (I realize not everyone agress with this statement).

All tours have been great and I can't wait for the next album and tour!!!

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

I have a general tour question. Does anyone know any of the songs that are played in the pre-show before Tool comes on? Specifically, any of the songs that are played right after Iron Maiden. From the 3 times I saw them on this tour it was the same songs in the same order each time and I thought they sounded cool but had no idea who they were by. Anyone have any ideas?

Just finished watching the whole Vicarious DVD and extras.

Gave me goosebumps. It is out of this world, visionary, creepy, amazing.

Inspiring.

Does not have any live concert footage. And i understand now why it took so long to create this masterful piece of work. I am even more appreciative of Tool and Alex Grey's beautiful pieces of art after watching this.

Go buy it now!!! Its worth your meager $10.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Well, it would appear that the tour is over. Even if they do play another leg early in the new year, it'll be too far for me to travel to, so either way it's over for me.

I had a completely killer time during the five shows I experienced. Seeing them in August of '06 in Calgary was special, because I had yet to see them. I felt that they were tighter in the summer (at Bonnaroo) and during this mini-tour. However, they may have been a little more into it earlier on in the tour, or seemingly more excited about it, given the fact that they were still just beginning to unleash their new art upon the world... which sounds hokey, but could very well be the case. There might have been more of a "buzz", if you could call it that, in the air last year, than say this year. Personally, I haven't grown tired of the new album or this tour, but some never even really got into the new album all that much, so I can see why seeing multiple shows on this tour might become sort of stale after awhile. Not to sound like a supposedly all-seeing all-knowing conceited asshole, but it would appear that the Tool that I know and love, differs even significantly from the Tool that others like (importantly: Tool is Tool, either try to enjoy what they want to do, or don't bother wasting your time and money, for your own sake). I know, I know, this goes without saying; we all get something different out of it. What I'm getting at here: Most big fans who saw them on this tour but were disappointed are kind of stuck in the mindset or the feel of Tool's older stuff. If all you can think about the whole time you see them is: "Oh I hope they play Opiate or Undertow or H or Prison Sex" and so on, then that's a shame, and you would have missed out on maybe enjoying what they were playing. Or maybe you had the right attitude, and the new shit just doesn't do it for you, and that's cool too. I personally treated a couple of friends to some shows on this last mini-tour, who aren't total Tool fanatics, and they had an absolute blast! Whereas some people who have written reviews on this thing were UTTERLY PISSED RIGHT THE FUCK OFF, in spite of what I thought was sheer brilliance, because of Maynard's attire, or there being too many lasers, <insert other cynical remark here>.

I can understand someone not wanting them to end with Vicarious. I too felt that it wouldn't feel right as a closer. But having seen it within the context of their current set, it makes sense to me.

I think their sound is always good at shows, as compared to other bands I've seen in arenas.

I love the further tweakings of songs, and love how every night offers a slightly different take on the various parts of songs. Lateralus has so many more dynamics and layers to it, compared how it was played on the last tour. Frick, I'm too tired right now to really hash out a sweet encapsulated review of five near-two hour experiences that I feel opened a lot of doors for me, musically and otherwise.

Thanks to Adam, Justin, Maynard, and Danny. I hope we haven't seen the last of them. It'd be sweet if they released some live recordings....

Hey Ryan! Good seeing you there and meeting your wife. I did hang at the Bellagio most of the day Saturday and went 4-1 on the sport betting (also killed a fat cigar and like nine rum and cokes). Yay me! Did you guys get to tour around a bit to the other casinos? Was hoping to run into you at some point before the day was out. Oh well!

Yeah I think that was one. From what I saw at the Thurs Pearl show in Vegas, the music was running off a macbook where all the mixing boards were. I wish I could find the setlist of songs that runs off that macbook somewhere. Anyone else remember/know any?

Fortysix & 2
Ænema
Schism (ext)
Lateralus

Vicarious

Wings for Marie

Pretty awesome. Heard all songs from 10,000 Days. Perfect. Yay!
I still don't understand why they did not do all of Intension. I mean, I was pretty puzzled by the lack of The Pot and Right In Two on a more consistent basis. But normally they have played every song off every album in its entirety at some point during their tour for that album, correct? They never played Intension all the way through.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

So as far as the shows i have seen these are the songs i was lucky enough to get played for me:

Opiate
---------
Opiate

Undertow
------------
Sober
Flood

Aenema
------------
Stinkfist (both extended and non)
46 and 2
Pushit
ions
Aenima

Lateralus
------------
Eon Blue Apocalpse
The Patient
Schism (both extended and non)
Lateralus (both extended and non)

10,000 Days
-------------
Vicarious
Jambi
The Pot
Wings 1+2
Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned
Right in Two

Highlights for me were pushit (i almost shit my pants when the intro riff came on), opiate (saw this at a show where my third eye was wide open... nearly collapsed it was so powerful), Lateralus extended version with cody from big buisiness (HOLY.FUCKING.SHIT), Wings (just fantastic live), and Right in Two (powerful)...

oh yeah. the entire coachella set. haha. never experienced a show with more energy in my life. ever. absolutely incredible.

Anyone know which remix of Peter Gabriels "Games Without Frontiers" Tool had on their preshow playlist? It's definitely not the Massive Attack version, but it was all extended and cool sounding.

Trust me dude- I am sporting a tremendous woody right now because of the DVD! That, or the viagra just hasn't worn off. :P

There's also a thread about the DVD in the Interact/Socialize section. That's where I have been posting about it.

Also, came across some decent Youtube footage of Nokia

No, Maynard never sang Intension afaik. The band often did large segments of the song. Actually, the only bright side to SD Street Scene was while they were trying to get people to ambulances, Tool did almost all of Intension (mostly thanks to Danny riffing on it until the band joined in). But Maynard never sang his part.

Yeah, it is very strange that "Intension" never got aired out this tour, specifically because it's a song off the album that they're touring for. It's also a song that isn't vocally strenuous on Maynard. I wonder if they would ever finally air it out on the next tour, it would be kinda weird if they did.

I cannot get enough of that riff that he's been playing prior to Schism. So bloody awesome. His Forty-Six & 2 synth intro is sweet too. Also, that part he often now plays after the wicked drummage during Lateralus, which leads into the remainder of the song. His talk box solo during Jambi I always enjoy. All the sounds he creates during Stinkfist; all the little transitions and what not are always done so sweetly. Fuck, he's a master at all that he creates.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Hello everybody. How yall doing?

I would just like to reflect for a few mins on what ive witnessed this past year on this tour. This was my first Tool tour ive ever been to. Been following their albums since Aenime, but never had the time/money to go to a show until now and I am satisfied beyond what i had hoped I'd be. Really great preformances, albeit i have nothing to compare it to, but... I enjoyed what i saw.

Got my tickets for the Southaven Mississippi show in early Feb right before Danny messed his arm up and thought i was screwed..well i did get screwed out of a ticket i baught for my buddy with the intention of him buying it from me , but he went back on his word and stuck me with a really overpriced ticket from some online ripoff site (ticket was like $240-ish, 6 rows from the front, and never got used). they rescheduled and I was at work (offshore), but had some other business to take care of that week so i got to come home and go to the show :)

Went to it and came back to work. Came home from my normal working hitch(2 weeks on and 2 weeks off) and drove solo to Baton Rouge to see an absolutely psyche-melting show hilighted by Pushit. I cannot stress enough how honored i feel to have seen this song. Has been my favorite ever since i bought Aenima. I was on my way to the show with no ticket and almost turned around but i had a hope they would play this song, and they delivered. As soon as i heard those opening riffs i felt like an electric eel had slithered into my pineal gland...hahaha awesome show.

Thought that was the last time i was gonna get to see them, and they sprang this little extra leg on us and i got to go to the New Orleans show on 11-17. I refrained from reading the setlist and reviews so i would be suprised with what they played and got Flood! Almost as good as Pushit...almost! That long-posterior extended intro was pure aural sonic power...loved it.

Dont know about yall, but i am totally happy with what ive seen. I think Tool is the modern day Pink Floyd on account of the machine like cohesiveness and musical direction they have taken and how they have grown. I am only 22 ys young and have never seen Pink Floyd live, but from their concert footage i have seen and personal accounts from those that were there back in their heyday I draw that conclusion. Just as progressive, just as psychedelic and just as meaningful.

I really hope yall enjoyed yourself and i hope yall have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year (i am at work for both holidays)!!

Setlist breakdown:

Opiate - None

Undertow - Flood

Aenima - Stinkfist (extended and non extended)
46 & 2
Aenima (encore at 5/15 Southaven show)
Pushit WOW

Lateralus - Schism (ext)
Lateralus (with requisite jam in the middle)

10kDays - Jambi
Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned (absolutely meant to be played live)
Intension intro/ Right in Two (very very very good)
Wings/10k days
Vicarious ( a stinker for me as i like that song the least of any tool song)

Thanks people here at the boards for your answering questions and kindness.
Thanks Tool for your relentless touring, flawless preformances, and ever-growing creativeness and positive messages night after night after night.

Peace people. Love Yall.

You know what Adam does well? Sustain. He gets notes out of that guitar to hold on for 30+ seconds all the time. It's not just some studio trick. Of course the easiest example are the bridge notes coming into the final riff of Rosetta Stoned. But he does it elsewhere too live. Schism, the suble tones on Wings 1. I watched him intently during the Nokia show. He barely moves at all. But his guitar, that tone... it moves.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

I bought the "signed" Houston tour poster from printmafia.net. But there is nothing signed. If I wanted the regular poster I would've paid $25 at the show instead of $40 from them. Anybody else buy from them and expect them to actually be signed? I am going to email them and see what they say. Just wanted to know if anyone else had this experince.
