Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Wish i'd made it for lateralus, but life was hetic then. Thought the 10000 days show at Tingley was top notch. Very fun and entertaining had a swell time. Bought a $40 shirt since they weren't selling beer that night. Like the shirt quite well. wouldn't have minded having a beer or two but i've gotten a bit more mileage out of the shirt. Probably caost the same as a beer or two. Hopefully we'll see them again??

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Hands down...the debut of Pushit in San Diego last May was the best performance of the tour in my mind. "Here's one we haven't played in a while". It wasn't just the song itself, but the crowd's reaction to the song that topped everything off. Luckily I have one remastered recording of Pushit from this tour for memories. I can hardly listen to the album version anymore as it feels weak by comparison.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Performance wise, I think the San Fran show was the best, based on the boot. Each song had a little extra umph. Setlist wise, the best show was Mansfield MA, 2006 which was the only show to include Pushit and Flood in the same set. The two San Diego shows were great as well. Had a chance to catch them both. I think that San Diego shows were the turning point of the tour. They picked up the show a notch. The first couple US legs were good, not great and visually not up to par with past Tool shows. At the start of 2007 leg after Danny's surgery, there were a couple of meltdown shows, in particular the Reno show which was before San Diego. The visuals and playing came together in San Diego and carried through the rest of the 2007 shows.

Saw Columbus OH in 2006 and Atlanta, Greenville, Cinci and last LV show in 2007. Favorite was LV because of the small venue. ISIS favorite opener. Flood at LV favorite song.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

coachella 2006. first show in nearly four years. waiting for 7 hours infront of the stage to get as close up as i possibly could to see tool for my first time (after missing them for stupid reasons during the lateralus tour... which i will never forgive myself for)... started about 10 heads back from the front bar. was crushed by the 60-80 thousand ppl in the crowd all pushing forward on me. waiting. waiting. waiting. then the intro bass drone of stinkfist came on after a quick greeting by MJK. that is something i will never forget. permanently imprinted in my memories as the greatest musical moment i have ever experienced in my life. once the guitars kicked in the 60-80thousand ppl there erupted into a straight up warzone. most intense experience i have ever had. by the end of stinkfist i was 1 head back from the front :-)

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

We did a 'top shows' earlier in this thread so I won't re-hash. But I agree with Phosphorescent Button that certainly one of the best moments of the tour was the debut of Pushit on that second night in San Diego. "Just think of us as a cover band". Here are my top 'moments'

Staples Center, LA (first leg, first night) - debut of 10,000 Days
Cox Arena, SD - debut of Pushit
Nokia Theater, LA - Rosetta Stoned
Coachella - All of it
The Pearl - All four shows
Pukkelpop, Belgium - double time part in Schism

Hm, obviously it's kind of tough to nail down specific moments but I could go on. I still put that first night at Staples Center in LA as the best show though. Wings 1&2 debut that night.

As for opening acts- the best opening act (or band that went on before Tool) for this tour was Nine Inch Nails. Never been a huge fan but I changed my tune about them after their performance. They're damn good. I think you could also count Massive Attack in that mix. Tool fans were pretty hard on Massive Attack, but actually, they were amazing. As for the non-festival bands, I love Melt Banana, but I saw them headline their own gig here in LA.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

10,000 days debuted the first night staples 9.7. that was a better show than the night after

2nd night was weird, they encored with wings 1+2 followed by lateralus but dropped opiate from the setlist and maynard complained about getting sick.

This leaflet recently found during moving house routine:

"The Biggest Day Ever

It's going to be a huge day and everyone will be there. All the current members members of Tool will be there......blah blah blah......The great and the small. No-one will be exempt. Even I, (the writer of this leaflet) will be found there, and so will you. You will be there on that day! So what is this huge day that is being written about here? Is it some sort of music charity event? No! Not in any way! This big day is none other than God's Day of Judgment....blah blah blah....Christ....sin....blah blah blah...."

Ah yes... that was a good Big Day Out... Nope, you never did manage to convert me by name-dropping the headliners.

I saw the 10,000 days tour twice, once in AC and once in Reading (any pictures from those show le me know please). When they played flood in Reading it was arguably the best live moment I have had from any concert. They were both good shows though and the setlists were pretty good.

I'm busy moving on with my life, trying to earn a wage.
Waiting like everyone else for the next time Tool does something, whenever that may be.
Currently doing lighting for corporate shows, as well as some TV lighting for Telemundo and NBC Universal.

The January 17th business was much ado about nothing.
There was something relatively minor planned for that day, but it still hasn't happened. As minor as it was, I'm not yet at liberty to divulge what it was.

I still read that newsletter as being a very "opposite" based alternate universe. Hence the green pen instead of purple (green and purple are opposites in the spectrum).
Also, January 17th and December 14th (last day of the tour) have something in common. They are both 17 days from New Years, on opposite sides of it.

For most of the US tour there were 6 buses.
Passenger count ranged from 4 to 11 per bus.
Most buses are capable of sleeping 8 or 12.

European buses are slightly different, and buses are not used in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Australia and New Zealand is all flights, and Japan is a mix of flights and trains.
The tail end of the most recent European tour was all flights because of the distances involved.

Yeah, but Danny doesn't usually bust his bicep. I guess the delay that caused put the tour back too far and they had to cut off some of the planned shows.

you mind sharing how the entire stage show and equipment is transported venue to venue considering having to fly great distances to get to the next one?

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Well the best part of the last round(s) of touring for me was being on the west coast and being able to see ten shows of the 10,000 days. One sentence if I can to highlight each of them:
06,
Oakland mini, Front row Orch A, Adams side face from Ticketmaster, girlfriends 1st Tool show.
Fresno, Two kick down tickets for me and my boy great ambient jamming and the scream during Stinkfist.
The Gorge, Driving over 1,800 mile round trip to get there, Maynard walking around on stage during Rosetta.
Sacramento, Home town show, extended Opiate, good stuff.
Oakland, "so where were we" my 1st Right in Two

07,
Vegas x2, Just the fact I was able to make those shows with the new dates and hooking up with some really cool cats from the board. 1st night Adams Jambi solo no vocal box. 2nd night Swamp Song.
Reno, 3rd show in a row is there such a thing as a bad Tool show?
Spokane, Never been to Spokane so I went, needless to say I won't be going back, 1st Flood.
San Francisco, this was sweet 16 for me and I could not be more happy at a Tool show than I was that night. Took 2 friends, it was there 1st show man did they get a jem. Pure magic could not have been any better of a show to end my run.

In ten shows the only thing I missed was Pushit. Just hope I don't have to wait 4 more years to get a chance to hear it.

In the US in 2007 it took 7 semi-trucks to move the gear around.
If the show ended around 11pm, everything was usually in the trucks and on the road by about 1 or 2am. Load in at the next city usually started at 8 or 9am.

At the end of the 2007 European tour, everyone and everything had to be flown to Serbia, Croatia, Greece, and Turkey because trucks wouldn't have been fast enough.
For that a Russian Antonov cargo plane was used.

Hey junior what did you do throughout the day while on the road working with Tool? When did you have to actually start working?

My day usually started around 10 or 11am, which is when I would set up the lighting console, run the control cable to the stage, and set up the 4 lights that were out by me.
Then sometime between 1 and 3pm is when I would start focusing the lights and doing general programming changes, which would last until usually around 5 or 6pm. At that point I would turn the system over to one of our lighting crew members (Adam), who also did lights for the opening act.
