I believe instead of "Credulous at best your desire to believe in..." he is saying "Could you at least divest your desire to believe in...

Anyone think it could indeed be this??

Don't think so either. Despite of it actually being "credulous" if you listen closely, "divest" wouldn't make any sense here, as in most other songs Maynard is encouraging not to give up believing in "the good part" in everyone of us.
