Anyone else think the point at the beginning is that his voice is "Soo Hiiigh"? Awesome song by the way.

Yeah, this is my favourite song after Vic. Shit, if they would've just picked this one as the single....

i got my friend to listen to the start of The Pot, and he asked if it was James Blunt singing it!
IMO those intro vocals are terrible

I heard from a pretty reliable source that Maynard achieved that particular vocal by having Blair hang from his scrotum by his teeth while singing it. Seriously.

Let's never compare Manard to James Blunt ever again, heresy I tell you. I wouldn't say that the vocals are the best but it gets your attention none the less.

I actually enjoy the opening vocals. I find it nice that Maynard is experimenting with his voice and not being afraid to "shed his skin" so to speak. I have the utmost respect for the man.

This is nothing new for MJK, here's a list of his more melodic performances to the best of my knowledge
Eulogy, end of Jimmy, Parabol, end of Lateralus, Disposition, little bit in Undertow
In the past he's just had insturments in the background, makes it a little harder to discern. I think it's a tribute to his power as a singer that he can bust out a little a capella.
FLAWLESS a capella, might I had, man has the voice of a god

i agree after listening that this is a great song, but did anyone else think it was a maroon 5 song before the bass came in?

This kind of funny, but when I first heard "the pot" i honestly thought it was some guest jamaican chick singing with the whole "whacha talk bout.." begining part...that was only for a few seconds, then I realized it was maynard with his nuts in vice singing that part while channeling a long dead voodoo priestess! ;)
That's a joke, but I'm serious about thinking it was some jamacian chick at first.
That's a testament to his incredible vocal range!

maynard is fucking amaizing. ironically i was toking up at the end of 10000 days when the pot came on and i nearley fell out of my chair. it took me a second to remember i was listening to tool. imo its one of the best endings of any tool song.

Damn right! It's euphoria hearing 'the man' sing. He makes me O. I'd marry him just so he could sing me to sleep every night.

I really like the intro vocals to this - really helps to emphasize the blues theory basis that pervades throughout this album rather than a metal/ trip root. This song throughout is loaded with blues vocal stylings - when he shouts "high" in later repetitions, he demonstrates a method of vocal control that is fairly atypical for metal, but commonplace in blues. Also, I always respect any vocalist who is as willing as maynard to break outside his comfort zone as a vocalist - like the first verse of the grudge.
Also - for those suprised at the sort of bluesy rhythm to these songs, particularly this song, listen to his work with Danny Lohner as Puscifer - those songs are entirely based in blues vocals.

The first time I heard this, I immediately suspected that it was recorded backwards. Does anyone remember some reports a while ago (from Alex Grey I think) that Maynard was not singing actual words? This would explain this theory, although I've just read this german interview which suggests it may have been guide vocals that were heard.
Thoughts?
(apologies if this has already been mentioned as I've only just ventured into the song forums)
