Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

It's great to read these reviews and hear my own thoughts echoed. To me, last night all that mattered was Wings. I knew at the first notes of the song how important that performance would be, but I wasn't expecting what would come. I was seated to the left of the stage on the first level above the floor. When Maynard left the stage he was just below me and wiping his eyes after removing his glasses, and I've never been so emotional at a concert as a I was after seeing what he was going through. It was with great appreciation that I watched him fight through the remainder of the song. I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only teary-eyed Tool fan. I almost lost it at a couple points:
Ignorant fibbers....spare me!...That line is worth so much.
All of the beautiful praises of her being the only worthy enough for God.
Then the climactic...Give me my, give me my WINGS!
Ugh, that was a tough, yet beautiful moment.
All I could think after the show was that they might never play that song again, and that I had been present for what is destined to be one of the most memorable moments of Tool's live performances.
That was the third time I saw them this week, and I was planning on skipping the second Staples show for monetary reasons, but now I don't see how I can.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Definitely a great show.

Isis was a good opening band. Other than the guttural singing/yelling every now and then, they've got a good sound.

Only my second Tool show, but just as good as the first. Though, the 6'6'' guy standing a row in front of me created quite an obstacle. Looking forward to seeing tonight's show without having to jump up and down, bob my head side to side and climb on my chair in order to see the stage. Sorry to the folks behind me.

And then of course, to the wasted dude...oh man...slapping eveyone's ass, grabbing on to everyone one around you...passing out...waking up and then wandering off...you missed a great show man.

Finally...met some cool people in my row...to all of you...keep on, keep on, keep on.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Great show . . . . . too bad I missed a significant portion of it thanks to the band and their lame ass, no class, meathead mentality security dipshits! The band apparently still has a holy and sacred complex about their image (i.e. absolutely no pictures of the band may be taken at anytime during the show). So to all you tens of thousands of fans out there who have taken live shots of the band: Fuck you! They do not like you!

Did anyone else notice the six-foot sign staring you in the face as you entered the arena with the rules . . . one of which clearly stated that there are to be no cameras with lenses larger than 3 1/2", which is consistent with the Staples Center website which says no professional photography or flash photography:

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n185/photodab/IMG_0369.jpg
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n185/photodab/IMG_0374.jpg

I had just told my buddy, "Dude, I might need to go back to the car. I don't know if they're going to let cameras in here." Then I saw the sign and thought, "Sweet! My little Canon Powershot w/ the flash off is fine." No such luck. About midway through the show, some jerk-off grabs hold of me and asks me to go with him. He then ushered me past the side of the stage (which was pretty cool) and told me that I could either give him my battery, my memory card, or leave the show. When I said, "Bud, you have signs right at the front entrance that says my camera is fine", he and someone else then ushered me into some side room with some other guy. They all pretty much told me that the sign I'm talking about didn't exist. Turns out, it's because they work for the band and not the Staples Center, so they don't know the fucking rules or Staples Center's posted policy. The guy then has me pull out my ticket and shows me where it says, 'no cameras, audio/video devices' in fine print. I'm sorry - I really am, but when I have to pay $450 to some broker for two tickets, I'm simply looking for the seat number and the fact that it says 'TOOL' on it. I don't study a fucking concert ticket. When I put my wallet, cell phone, and CAMERA into the little bowl as I passed through the metal detector, I would think someone would have informed me that it was a problem to take the camera in.

Anyways, I was cool and calm and offered to comply by giving them my battery. The new guy then says, "No. The battery AND the memory card." Then I'm like, "Hell no! That has pictures of me and my wife on vacation. I'll delete the fucking Tool pictures, but you're not getting my personal shit!" So then the fat-ass says I have to leave, and before I know it there's about a dozen security guys there to escort me out. So now I loose my cool and I say that, "I need to speak to someone's manager NOW! This is complete bullshit!" The supervisor of Staples Center security then shows up and starts to talk with me. He was cool as hell, courteous, polite, and understanding. He listened to what I had to say about the confusion and then asked me to answer one question, "Were you aggressive with the bands security at all?" I said, "Absolutely not. It wasn't until I realized that I was being strong-armed out on to the sidewalk that I got pissed off." I simply tried to talk with them, get them to understand the conflicting information, and offered to reasonbly comply.

The supervisor then allowed me to check in my camera (which I was later able to retrieve), and apologised for any inconvenience. He then (himself) escorted me back to my seat on the floor because 'Fat-Ass' had taken my ticket. He also said the band's security was supposed to check in with him before anyone is ejected. He could tell I didn't mean to cause any trouble and he was well aware of Staples Center policy. He said that usually it's fine and that concerts usually allow cameras nowadays, but that a few bands still do not. Hey TOOL: There's cell phones now w/ 3.0 megapixel cameras. You gonna ban phones too??? What's the big fuckin' deal? It's your right and I understand that, and I tried to respect that when I found out it was your wishes. But for YOUR employees to have that kind of attitude with YOUR fans is fucking ridiculous! It should be YOUR responsibility to make sure the venue doesn't give conflicting information. I've got fuckin' Ape Boy dancing like Maynard next to me and some guy in front blowin' smoke in my face all night, and I get kicked out for my little camera. Don't get me wrong - Maynard is awesome to watch, but you don't want to be standing next to him while trying to watch a show, . . . unless it's really him.

After all that, I did get back in time to see the debut of Wings/10,000 Days, thank God. It was awesome! I would have been so pissed if I had missed that. So glad they all decided to do it despite how difficult it must be for one of their members. It was touching to say the least . . .

I would love to see them tonight, but I think I've still got a bitter taste in my mouth about the whole thing. Oh yeah, . . . after the show on the way out, an usher pointed out to where the band's people had taped newspaper size print of their rules on the window:

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n185/photodab/IMG_0373.jpg).

Don't know how I missed that!

Sorry, but I had to vent.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

There were definitely problems with Maynard's mic last night. At one point (can't remember the song- Vacarious?) I saw him pulling the mic on the stand to him and singing into that while still playing the keyboard because something was clearly wrong with the mic mounted on the keyboard.

He also was barely audible during that first verse in Wings just before he walked off, so I agree with the above ^ poster there were more problems than just the emotions running through Maynard that led him to leave the stage.

I also noticed that Maynard barreled through the verses in Rosetta Stoned (throwing off the timing for the band) and the sound for his bullhorn contraption was pretty horrible and inaudible overall. He also botched a few lyrics here and there in other songs where he normally does not have a problem (although the thing he does leaving out 'ground' and 'down' in the second verse of Right In Two is apparently intentional).

The rest of band were clearly flustered and not as tight as usual in some spots. They blew the section coming out of the first verse in Lateralus, which is just not something they normally do. FYI, a sure-fire sign that something is amiss is whenever Adam turns his head towards Justin and Danny- that means either he just fucked up, or they did. watch for it tonight.

Bottom line- there was a price to be paid for getting Wings and Days for the first time. Maynard's energy and nervousness over peforming it for the first time in front of a home crowd (along with mic issues) were affecting everyone and everything it seemed.

Other than this stuff, the show was the best arena rock show I have seen. The mistakes and sound problems got trumped by a great light show, high emotions for Wings and an oustanding performance from Adam (best I have seen him). I think Adam was the emotional and musical anchor last night that everyone leaned on to get them through. The talk-box solo in Jambi was as good as he can play it.

/rant on

My experience was a little tempered by the fact that I made the mistake of bringing someone with me who hadn't seen Tool since Undertow. All she could talk about was how "Maynard doesn't move around like he used to!" and "He needs to come to the front of the stage and interact with the crowd!". She said that about 10 times and I finally said "Look, Maynard hasn't done that for the last 10 years, so it's you that needs to make the adjustment to him, not the other way around. This is what he does now." She then said, "Well, I don't like it" and I replied "Well I LOVE IT!". That shut her up for a while but then I had to hear it again after the show. Sigh... my other buddy who was with me had a great time. It was obvious that we were both moved by the show, and I can't help but wonder why some people can't just shut up with their dissenting opinions when it is clearly detracting from an otherwise special moment for others.

/rant off

See you all tonight!

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Second tool show, and holy shit.
Wings For Marie/10,000 Days... those songs are so powerful.
I could feel Maynard's emotions as he sang it.
When he walked off stage, i just wanted to sit down and cry for him.
Those two songs were totally worth it.

And that hug between Adam and Maynard was moving.

WFM/10000days + sped up part of schism = highlights.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

wow. to all of it. this explains a lot for me guys, thanks. I wasn't disappointed in the show, but it was so different than how Tool shows were described to me- now I see why. I also did not know the whole story behind Wings 1 and 2. Now that I do, it all makes sense. I hope they will play it again tonight. see you there ;)

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

My 3-rd TOOL show, all this year. I would enjoy anything TOOL plays, but I was hoping they would play 10,000 days this time. When I heard the first note of wings I was skeptical, this could actually be wings, or they could just make it an intro to another song. After 4-5 notes I knew they were goin to play at least part 1. When they started part 2 I got even more excited. Once MJK returned to the stage I knew they were going to finish the song. Exceptional experiance. Thank you TOOL for being so great, everytime. I don't know how you can top yesterdays show, but if anyone can it's TOOL. See you tonight.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Me and my pal T Mat were in Premiere Seating #17; for both of us, our first time seeing Tool live. It was a very special night for both of us. Starting with Stinkfist was very meaningful to me, seeing how it is the first Tool song i ever knew of. When Danny did the synth drum intro halfway through the song, I nearly wet myself. 46 and 2 was just breathtaking, of course featuring Danny's solo.
10,000 Days, as an album, still hasn't warmed up to me yet, but I very much enjoyed The Pot, Jambi (especially Adam's solo, which is a little cheesy on the album, but i absolutely loved last night) and of course Wings/10,000 Days. My admiration for Justin Chancellor grew tenfold after this... Everyone knows he's a brilliant bassist, but seeing him pull it off flawlessly (complete with zeppelin style sitting) was just plain cool. The middle section of Schism, a sped up version of the original, was very dramatic, and flowed nicely into the original. Also, the end of Right in Two was brilliant. Lateralus was epic...a very nice treat for first timers like ourselves... At the end of this, The four just sat down for about 5 minutes, next to eachother. One of them (I could not tell who) held up a lighter, which of course incited the whole crowd to light up the arena with their own peripherals...a sight to be held! they saved the best for last though... Aenema blew me away...moved me to tears even. I couldn't think of a more appropriate song to end such a glorious night with, especially in the heart of Los Angeles itself.

We were in "limited view" seating, although I think it was probably the best seating i could have asked for with $45. Maynard was on our side the whole time, so i enjoyed his usual antics. Seen him with APC a couple times, but this was much better. For the first few songs, the stage looked like a dance floor, a pretty white. Then the lights and cinematics kicked in and livened the appearance of everything.

My only complaints concern the numerous teeny boppers behind me bursting my ear drums with their cat-like screeching during the most inappropriate of times (ie when the band played soft). I almost wanted to shoot myself when one girl said "i don't know why people get out their lighters and cell phones, but i just do it when they do!!" and laughed at herself in irony. ARGH.

But nothing hampered us from having a good time. I will definitely catch Tool in the future. Not tonight though, sadly; I haven't the money. But I am in no position to complain, having heard 10,000 days, Lateralus, and Aenema.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

The show was amazing. Seeing Wings performed for the first time was indescribable. I really wanted to hear Right in Two and it was everything I had hoped for.

I just saw them in Vegas last week and this show delivered so much more impact. Especially since there were no lasers and there is so much light outside in Vegas. Last night the visuals were almost overwhelming at points.

I was just behind the soundboards and thought I saw Justin checking out Isis. If it was him, he casually walked by and it seemed no one really noticed.

While they took their intermission, Maynard just laid on his back at the back of the riser. Danny helped him up and gave him a hug before they got started with their encore. The whole emotional scene was intense.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Not much left to say. You guys all summed it up pretty well. As soon as i saw Justin and Adam trade their instuments for a special one for the next song, i knew wings was coming. Also, maynard was messing around witht the keyboard and i knew vicarious wasnt till later, so something new was coming.

One last thing though. Does anyone else think the reason he walked off was because he messed up the lines? I was singing along in my head and im pretty sure he messed up under all the pressure/emotion. I would love it if i could be told otherwise. I instantly got reminded of the video on youtube of maynard throwing the mic when he lost his voice in parabola. I really hope it was due to emotional reasons. I could totally understand that.

read my review - i still do think that this might have contributed to the whole incident. i was also singing along in my head and felt that one of us messed up. of course it just might have been me ;)

I could have sworn he did the first few words of later in the song, and just stopped when he realized he was off. I felt like i was one of the few sober people at the concert so i would think my account would have some credibility...

/nods in agreement

You are on to something here (along with kabir) because thinking back now I believe it did happen. It seems like there were a few things conspiring against that first performance of Wings. But I guess that just makes it all the more special that it went off so well and with so much heart.

Hey Kabir & I CHAS I,

Sorry guys, but your account is a little mistaken. Maynard walked off in Part 1, not Part 2. During the "You believed in me . . . " and returned for "Broken, fell at the hands of those moments that I wouldn't see, 'cause you're who prayed for me . . . " He didn't mess up or forget the words, he just got a little choked up, and somehow found the strength to continue. It was actually quite impressive. Then they all nailed Part 2, especially after Maynard cried out "Give me my wings!" Rhythm section was unfreakinbelievably awesome.

P.S. Thanks for the site Kabir.

What an amazing show. I had a great floor seat (thanks to the hookup thread) and had a great time.

A little disappointed not to see anything from Undertow, though. Oh yeah, Wings live.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Holy fuckin' crap! That was the best show ever. I was just bewildered. The tempo of The Pot was a little fast at the beginning, as was Vicarious, but they were still awesome. The visuals were just amazing. I've seen Tool on acid before, and I was completely sober last night and it was the best psychadelic experience of my life. I felt like I was tripping. I don't want to repeat everything that's been said about the show already, but Wings/10,000 Days was amazing live. I was aggravated with people clapping to 10,000 days like it was a fucking camp song or something. It just ain't that kind of song in my opinion. Anyway, can't wait for tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the faces behind these avatars.

O.K. Now I'm thoroughly confused after you and 'I CHAS I' corrected me. Maybe he messed up in Part 2, but did he walk off in Wings or 10,000 Days? I concede I may have unfortunately still been fuming and distracted due to my experience mentioned in my previous post.

Thanks!

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Best Tool show ive ever been to.

I cried multiple times throughout the night. Had to wipe the tears from my face and act tougher than I felt - lol. The only group in history that will ever be able to do that to me and Im positive of that. Just thinking about what they have given me through the years makes me almost tear up right now like a little bitch. Im not one to cry over much.

I can't believe our show last night was finally the one that debuted 10K Days... fucking awesome. Also my first time hearing RS live, which I've been waiting for since assholes at the San Diego show last month got it canceled for the set).

A+++ show, no negatives to speak of from my end. Possibly not only the best Tool show ive ever been to, but the best concert as a whole out of hundreds in my life.

Yes, Wings. It was amazing. Everyone has already expressed pretty much every emotion I felt last night. I laughed, I cried, and everything in between. I wish I could see them again tonight, but no luck. I'm pretty sure the reason Maynard left the stage was because he got caught up in all the emotion, I was in section 113 and saw him wiping his eyes, and I think the reason you guys "heard" different lyrics is because his voice was giving out from all the emotion. Why else would Adam give him that huge hug at the end? Last night was a very memorable experience. It will never be forgotten...

P.S. Does anyone know the setlist for ISIS last night?

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

I thought Isis was great but I wish they would have played a little longer than 25 minutes.

OK I don't know if anyone has noticed and I'm not about to look thru every thread to see, but does anyone else think the stage kinda looks like a lab? An Area 51 lab maybe? I noticed their crew was dressed in lab coats and with the stage being mostly white. Not to mention the various UFO visuals and the footage of Area 51 on Rosetta Stoned. And those round light fixtures that came down and kinda looked like UFOs with multiple lights. What do you all think.

Seeing the setlist for the second night, I would't trade this show for any other.

This show was one of the top 3 show's i've seen from them, getting a big boost in standing due to the lack of Sober. It was better than the second night...

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

This is my 5th Tool show since 1997. The problem with a band like Tool is that they are so outrageously good that they keep setting the bar higher for themselves. Eventually, they just aren’t going to be able to live up to previous shows, and I hate to say it but tonight the concert fell a bit short of my lofty expectations.

Let’s start with the positive aspects of the concert. Without a doubt, the set list was a dream come true. Basically they gave us their entire new album as the main course, with some old standbys sprinkled in for dessert. As much as I love the song “Sober”, I was perfectly happy to see it get sacrificed for the greater good of the show. Seeing 10K was just as amazing as everyone else described, and during Rosetta Stoned we got a full on sing-along with “But I forgot my pen, Shit the Bed Again!” And Jambi is the BEST live song every…fucking awesome.

My main problem with this concert probably has more to do with the venue than anything else. As we all know, Tool relies heavily of mixing their visuals in with their music to provide the viewer with a full on audio/visual orgasm that leaves him pleasantly numb. When I came into the Staples center before the show and saw that HUGE black curtain hanging behind the stage, I got really excited imagining what would get projected onto it. Or maybe what was behind it? Much to my dismay, it was not utilized at all. Besides the paltry 5 foot screens on the stage, I was forced to crane my neck to the scoreboard to see the visuals. Is that a Tool video or did Kobe just score 81? Fuck if I know because I couldn’t see it.

To their credit, they tried to supplement with lasers, but I just wasn’t buying it. I went to a cool laser show in the 80s when I was a kid, but that was the only time because I quickly learned that LASER SHOWS SUCK! And what the fuck happened with all of those lighters? I know people were trying to entice them into an encore, but LIGHTERS? I was fucking embarrassed. This is TOOL, not Journey or Motley Crue.

Maybe the lighters were there in a symbolic gesture to give the band some energy. They just seemed plain tired to me. Shit, look at their schedule and it’s easy to understand why. After the fact I hear that Maynard has been sick, which I guess serves as somewhat of an excuse, but then again that could be the fault of the aggressive tour schedule. And even if you’re sick, just a little acknowledgement to the crowd would have been nice. Say something…anything to us. At least have the courtesy to call me a douchebag or a hippie.

Sorry, I’ll hop off my soapbox now and try to close on something positive. The simple fact is that a Tool concert is like pizza or a blowjob – even when it’s bad, it’s still good. And this show was far from bad…it just didn’t inspire me quite as much as past performances. They are still the best band in the world and I will continue to support them in every way shape and form. I just hope that the next concert is at a better venue.

Second Tool show, saw them at Coachella. This was a thousand times better, but it would have been even better had my girlfriend been there with me.

Great reviews everyone, said everything I wanted to say and better. I was in the nosebleeds with my friends... And the show still fuckin rocked. Personal favorites, Forty-Six & 2, Ænima, and Schism. They did a perfect job with some of the extended tracks, I was stoked.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

maynard walked off during wings pt. 1 (within the first 3 mins of the song). i was row 1 floor 2 dead center, 100% guarantee when this was when he walked off. adam looked at justin, who raised his eyebrows in a "well fuck now what" kind of sense. the personal security of tool ran over to maynard, who composed himself and returned to stage. to note, maynard exited stage left, the band entered and exited stage right (where their dressing rooms were). from what it seems to me, he did not fuck anything up, its an understandably emotional song for him and thats what it was.

regardless, who cares. thanks for the great show and sorry for the overanalyziation. keep playing the music we love and we'll keep giving you our $$

My first tool show and even after 4 days of rest, my heart still pounds just thinking about about it. What else is there to do in life after seeing such beauty and hearing his haunting voice. To much to soak in all at once. Thank you tool for still being around and letting me have my one day...

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

this show was so utterly brilliant. I was dead center back of the floor on the elevated risers, i did not notice maynard leave the stage during wings. rosetta, right in two, wings, 10,000 days was stellar. must have been nearly 40 minutes of music from the new record. i really liked the tree of lights and the lasers were Ok kind of fun, but a little bit over the top for what i would expect from tool. this was a better show than the 2nd night.

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Finally, I've been waiting almost a week for the admins to allow me to post so that I can give a review.

First off, THIS SHOW FUCKIN ROCKED!!!!! Definitely my best live concert experience ever!!!!!! Others up there are the Metallica Black Album tour and the Led Zeppelin Reunion Tour. So emotional and so damn Hard!!!!

Second off, THANK YOU KABIR. Thanks to this site I have been able to closely follow the entire tour, and I have read just about every review for every show thus far. This is truly a great place for dedicated fans to express their ideas and opinions and share their experiences. I've been a Tool fan since Jr. High when Undertow was released, however this tour has been my first live Tool experiences and has definitely changed my perception of the band and of live music in it's entirety!

First I saw them at Coachella, which for me was a day full of amazing live performances. Massive Attack was incredible having not toured the US in 8 yrs, it was HUGE, but nothing could prepare me for the moment Tool took the stage, whom we all know had been on a 3 yr. hiatus. From the moment they hit the first few notes of Stinkfist until the the*climatic finish with AEnema, it was pure enigmatic bliss. Absolute nirvana. I have never heard so many people singing along to a live performance it was very overwhelming and almost erie like thousands of monks chanting in sync. I was well in front of the mixing board about 30 to 40 ft from the stage to the right, in front of Justin. After that show I was hooked like a LA street corner junkie, it really changed my expectations for live shows. I don't see how anyone could possibly be better live. I did not download the new album ahead of time so I didn't get to fully appreciate the new songs live, however they were still so unforgettably powerful to the point that when I bought the new album and listened to it for the first time The Pot, Jambi, and Vicarious sounded like Classics that I had heard a hundred times.

A few weeks later I saw that they were playing Street Scene and I bought tickets immediately. Tool once again was amazing but the show was a disaster. Just read the reviews. Thankfully, I took my girlfriend who was not a big fan so we stayed pretty far back just in front of the mixing board or else I probably would have been right in the middle of the chaos. I was very disappointed in peoples human nature that night and Maynard says it best, "where there is one they're bound to divide it right in two". Funny that is probably the song we missed out on along with rosetta stoned. To take what could have been such a great show and ruin it for everyone is a pity. Tool was impeccable despite the idiocy.

Left with mixed emotions and a bitter taste in my mouth I began to search for tickets religiously to the LA performances. After having a few floor seat deals fall through I managed to find a very tempting offer. Side stage tickets, Section 114 row 14. Because of seeing the first two shows I knew that I would be sitting off to the side of the stage where Maynard stands with his keyboard and would probably have a pretty good view even though the tickets said "limited view". I couldn't have been more right. The seats were amazing I don't think I would have rather sat anywhere else in the house. I was front row of my section directly to the side of the stage with perfect view of Maynard, Danny and Adam. Ill never forget when right after Stinkfist Maynard looked directly over at our section and paused to observe the roaring crowd with an emotionless look on his face but you couldn't help but tell there was a deep sense of appreciation behind his large aviator sunglasses. Also when Adam did his talk box solo he turned and faced us and I finally had a perfect view of how the talkbox functions with the guitar.

THE LA SHOW SEPT 7th.
Not much more can be said that hasn't already about this show, I would just like give my opinions on the nights events.

Stinkfist- awesome live and the perfect way to start off. That solo fuckin rocked.

The Pot- love the way maynard stops after the second line and lets the crowd finish then comes back and finishes right after. Brilliant!!!!! He did that as well at Street Scene and I loved it.

Jambi- ROCKS LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The talkbox solo really makes the song and I had perfect view of Adam during.

46&2- A must at every live show. Such a classic!

Schism- Not a big fan of this song but the double-time part makes it all worth it.

Rosetta Stoned- Finally first time to see it and was expecting it. Although he kinda botched the first part of it like Kabir said the last five minutes is mind blowing and they killed it.

Right in two- YESSSSSSSSS!!!!! I love this song and it is meant to be played live. I wanted to hear this song so bad and was absolutely ecstatic when they played the first few notes. I heard some one say they should end thier sets with this and I think that would be a great idea.

Wings Pt 1 and 2 - This I had no idea was coming and couldn't have felt more privileged when they started the song. Like sonny said when they hit the first few notes of that song is a moment I will never forget. As far as the dispute as to why he walked of stage and when he walked off.....He definitely walked of during the first verse of pt 2 like Kabir said and as far as why, looking at the stage I was sitting just to the left of where he walked off and down the stairs. He then removed his sunglasses and wiped his eyes and then put his hand on his forehead and walked passed us to my left into the tunnel with his head down. For those who know the meaning of this song and magnitude of debuting it live, it was definitely the fact that he was overcome with emotion that caused him to leave the stage. But he gained his composure and came back and nailed the song. Such a humbling and gratifying experience. The minute long hug between Maynard and Adam afterwards said so much. UNFORGETTABLE!!!!!!!!!! I have listened to the song every day since the show and it seriously gives me goose bumps every time.

Lateralus, Vicarious and AEnema were all so fuckin bad ass and perfect to end the night Classic songs off of three Classic albums. Love all of these songs live!!!!!!

They really out did themselves for their home town crowd. Longest set list on the tour yet and the most songs off 10000 days played live yet. The emotions of WINGS and being the first to see it played live made it a night to remember forever. Incredible show, I never knew a live multimedia experience could evoke so many different and strong emotions. Another thing I noticed was Maynard never addressed the crowd with any comments, a few thank you's and a good nite that was about it, which to me was his way of being humble. This adds to the fact that it was a very special night for the band and everyone lucky enough to be there. At Coachella he was very sarcastic and condescending. Starting off with " Good evening hippies, I can smell your patchouli from here" and "You know this is the first live show we've done in a long time, You're Welcome." Also made a comment about everyone downloading the new album and before AEnema said something about it being LA and everyone having backstage passes. Then at Street Scene he opened with" Good evening duesche bags and dick heads" which couldn't have been more deserving considering the ensuing events.

ALL IN ALL AMAZING AND SOMETHING I WILL NEVER FORGET!!!

Sorry if this was kinda of long but all this has been on my mind for the last week and I had to get it all out. I'm sure not too many people will read it considering its a week later but if you do thanx for taking the time because Ive took the time to read just about every review on the site. Once again thanx KABIR for letting me live Vicariously through your site and Thanx TOOL!!!!! Truly one of the most prolific and epic bands of our time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 2006/09/07 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Hello, all. Long time viewer, first time poster here.

Thursday 9/7 and Friday 9/8 @ Staples Center marked my 13th and 14th Tool shows, respectively. It all began @ The Grand Olympic Auditorium back in '93. I love music of all types, but TOOL will always be at the top of my list. ALWAYS!

Anyway, here are my 2 cents:

Thursday:

Sat in Section 106, Row 8, seat 1. I don't know if it was the myriad 12-dollar Coronas, or the fact that I hadn't heard any "10,000 Days" songs live, but I thought this was a kick-ass show. Tool is ear-candy to me, regardless of whatever minor (hell, even major) imperfections there are in the set. I made a huge mistake by going with a person who hadn't seen TOOL since the Aenima tour. He kept on saying that he was disappointed by the fact that Maynard wasn't moving around the stage more. As someone here alluded to earlier, Maynard hasn't done that in a decade. To be completely honest, I spent a good part of the show with my eyes closed -- letting the magnificent sounds reach the depths of my soul. After a short while, I had to tune out my buddy 'cause it didn't seem like he was enjoying the show even 1/10 of what I was. After he ceased his bitching, his younger bro (a VIP usher) got us into the VIP boxes in Sec. 17, albeit only for the last song, Aenema. It was a cool change of scenery, though. Overall, a wonderful + emotional night.

Friday:

Sat in Floor 6, Row 1, Seat 1. THE SECURITY GUARDS AT STAPLES NEED TO BE RETRAINED!!! Wow, "overzealous" wouldn't even describe how aggressive these goons were. Being in Row 1, I had a perfect view of how ridiculous some of their actions were. Camera phone? Forget it. Scent of weed? They huddled up like football players and attacked the suspected origin of the smoke in large throngs. The one security guard that really irritated me was a young African-American woman with red hair. When people were rockin' out to the tunes, she stared at them with this quizzical/disgusted look on her face. I remember seeing this look directed at me about 3 or 4 times, quickly followed by an eruption of laughter on her part. I finally asked her what she thought was so funny and she responded: "I ain't laughing at you. Go back and bang your head to this crazy music." Even with all this madness around me, I managed to block out all the bullshit and enjoyed every tune with a real fan, my older brother.

I hope to see TOOL again in '07. Hope ya'll had a great time!
