Mabey Maynard is singing from the perspective of someone coming to terms with someone who'll claimed they'd really die for them, but when it comes to it they're really just leading them on, and the guy is really hurt and betrayed because he really really belived the person would really die for him.

I'm having a hard time even trying to understand where you got this idea from.

Well, in my head Maynard is singing it like hes actually asking someone this. And pretty much a whole dimension is blown open when you start thinking about lyrics writing in speech.
Imagine a person, say a christian (just using it as an exaple) questioning the whole thing, and this person prays to Jesus to ask 'You claimed all this time that you would die for me...' Well, Jesus did pray to God after the last supper not to go through with it all despite he knew it was coming. (or so I was taught since a too young age)
The person within the song thinks that because of that split second of doubt he is fake.. Or mabey the person lied all along.
Bear in mind this is simply my opinion though...

If he claimed he wold die, shes asking him to die, for her.
Stop pandering , and wipe that suprised look off your face and GOODBYE!
This is difficult to explain, ill do a try: all of life we believed in being something more.
More , that, someone would do it all for us. Well if he's tge guy steppin up to the plate,
then he better be loud because we've had it ! Die like the plan you got from God or something, and get out! Even she starts in " to ascend you must die, be crucified, for our sins, your lies, goodBYE!! - its about how one man cant save the whole sum of sins or at least not this guy. Our sins"" and your lies"" now what was Jesus' bigger lie? Thats one you'll have to figure out.
Its not just a song about saying goodbye to christianity, its a song about a liar, a coward, a falsity, a character(well erupted) , but also a song about saying goodbye to someone who lies to you with the mask of virtue. "Not all martyrs see divinity, but at least you tried"
Weighing it among the theme of the album is so interesting. I feel the that it's the writers' oppinion that this "jesus christ" is nothing. His religion failed, he was a character idol, he was part of himself taking down everyone else, never looking from within (his heart). Because everything he promised were just words (the maynard air guitar at the biggining of the song) they were just words. They have little or nothing to do with what happened.
And if it didnt come quick enough(so long, we wish you well)
There is a belief in there though( you could be the one who savies me from my own exsistance) but they realize its a facade and yet she still wants him to die , holding him to his word. But then in the end life goes on and they prepair for the NextOne!
