You must be really insecure because I don't really see where I was trying to be an authoritative figure over you... but I *was* giving you shit, maybe you just mistook the two. It's just an internet board, calm down.

Though I may agree with you on your points that's the second time you've told him to "calm down" which is the perfect way to rile someone up, especially someone who's already kind of there. But you know this, don't you?
He apologized for any misunderstanding on his part, seems decent enough.

This Mp3 still freaks me out.
"Gunshot... " ?
Okay that would fit up with "steel barrel reversing your shady inference" but that's not what he sings, lol.

Naaaaaah, can't be.
"Violent fingers" is neither humorous nor effective as a serious phrase.
It does "make sense" but in too obvious of a way.
It just doesn't seem to fit.
Most tellingly, it doesn't sound anything like "violent".
I just listened to it to make sure and I guess can understand that one might hear "violent" there. I still don't.

I'm still sure that it is the real lyric.
Listen to that live file, it gives much more insight on the lyrics.

Well after listening to the live track & studio track quite a few times, I've found this is what I sing along to...
Who are you to wave your finger?
You must have been out your head
Eyehole deep in muddy waters
You practically raised the dead
Rob the grave to snow the cradle then
Burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass
So don't go tossin' your stones around
You must have been high
You must have been high
You must have been...
Foot in mouth and head up ass
So what you talkin 'bout?
Difficult to dance 'round this one
'Till you pull it out, boy
You must have been so high
You must have been so high
Steal / Borrow ; Reaper save your shady inference
Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent
Now you're weepin shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must have been high, high
You must have been high, high
Who are you to wave your finger... so bored of it
Eyeballs deep in muddy water... fuckin hypocrite
Liar/lawyer, mirror show me: what's the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent
Now you're weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye, eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle, you must have been
So who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your mighty fingers at me?
You must have been out your mind!
Weeping shades of indigo
Shed without a reason
Weeping shades of indigo
Liar/lawyer mirror for ya; what's the difference?
Kangaroo be stoned he's guilty! - ask the government
Now you're weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye, eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must have been high, high, high, high
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
You're balls deep in muddy waters
Can't ya Please!--you must have been out your mind!
Now I admit some of it doesn't make the best sense (Can't ya puh-lease!???)
And I threw in "so bored of it" as I absolutely hear a "b" sound both studio & live, though I do like subordinant better.
Also for the studio version I sing-a-long as "Steal / Borrow, Reaver save your..." Though I am perfectly willing to believe that it should be reaper and that they've turned the p spitting sound right down :-) so that you can't hear the p at all.

I have no patience to read through 15 pages of mostly adolescent bickering, so I'm just going to post what I want to randomly, and what comes of it, comes of it.
On that, I feel bad posting another (unless it IS buried somewhere between pages 5 and 14) version of the Liar/Lawyer line, but...
I'm hearing a more political version. Sounds like ...
"Liar, Lawyer, Mirror 4-year, what's the difference"
...to me. A hit on the 2nd term of the Bush Admin. I don't mean to start anything, it's just another possibility I wanted to add for consideration.
Secondly, I'm not familiar with the "indigo tears/weeping" being a term, slang or otherwise, for fake tears, so that may just be my shortcoming, but does anyone think this may be a reference to indigo children? Just another idea I'm throwing into the Pot.
hahahaha. Seriously though.

i have a new suggestion for the "steal, borrow" part:
steal, borrow, reap or save your shady inference
it makes more sense and it definetely fits well
::edit::
my bad, this isn't a new suggestion, but it was a suggestion by mikaveli75 and communication that was ignored and so i'll bring it back up

After being an ass and insisting that there was no way the last "Eyeballs deep" sounded like "You're balls deep", I withdraw. After hearing 3 live recordings, they all are clearly not "eyeballs" but something more like "you're balls"
Thank you, have a nice day.

Wait... is it just my southern accent, or are the words "saviour" and "save your" phonetically sound the same?
Because for a while, I thought "pen" and "pin" were the same, but evidently not.
And I think you're one comma too many. Wouldn't it be "Steal/borrow refer, save your shady inference" You know, like weighing both "shady inferences". Unless you think you hear the word "or" inbetween "steal" and "borrow". But it's late, and the sung double syllable(sp?) in "steal" is something I don't wanna get into in this post.
Mainly just asking the question: "Are the words "saviour" and "save your" phonetically alike?"

If you were to speak with proper phonetics, which most of us don't really bother to do because we're all lazy, savior/saviour and save your aren't phonetically the same. You have savior, which ends in a "yer" sound, and save your which ends in a "yohr" sound.

Very interesting thought; I see this song as a poke at Dubya and the state of our nation under Dubya; I can see that some people here are unwilling to accept this but that's probably part of the reason they've purposely kept it vague enough for other interpretations. They want to make a point but not come right out and alienate a good portion of their fan base, after all they are probably not averse to selling records and tickets to people from all sides of the fence. Plus why "date" the song. But the mirror line at 2:40 he just says, "mirror show me, what's the difference." Nothing's impossible but I doubt the line later becomes "mirror 4-year". If the purpose of using "mirror" is to refer to the 4-year terms rather than the "liar/lawyer" reflections, it should be there both times, shouldn't it?

the weeping shades of indigo could be referred to the Blue (democrat) states as opposed to the Red (republican) states.

However I doubt that anyone writing a 'protest song' (something I don't really associate with Tool anyways) would be saying "4-year, what's the difference"; that's the point of writing the protest song isn't it, the fact that it does make a difference?

I'm sure that it's "sing your shady inference."
Therefore it could be "Reversing" or "Reaver sing" or, and I don't think it's this, "Reefer sing".
My money's on "Steal, borrow, reversing your shady inference." = "You took something which belonged to somebody else and therefore placed your own presumptive and slanderous judgement upon yourself."

Minus the "or", I agree with this one.
I checked out "Steal, borrow, reversing your shady inference" because I thought it sounded good enough. I mean, reversing: yeah, okay. But I'm hearing the "v" sound before "your" like the word "savior" (haha, reminds me of my earlier post) so I think it's a pretty good bet to say it's not "...reversing your shady...".
Still, it's a good guess. (Since opinons really can't prove anything conclusive.) I mean, if you ignore the "v" there, it could actually fit.
It's funny how much "f" and "v" can sound alike in many a song.

"Steal or borrow reefer!"
Yeah, that's the message Tool's been waiting 15 years to give us.
Please.

I just want to rule out "reefer" "reaver" or "reversing" (I thought it was reversing at first)
Listen to the aforementioned Live Pot link. If you couldn't notice it on the studio (which to me does sound like a cross between an f and a p sound, like "pf"), then there ya go. It's a p sound. I will bet anyone here $50 that when they release the lyrics it is a "P" sound.
I've already given more than enough info on why it's "steel, borrow; reaper, savior" but I won't try to argue it with you guys.
And if you think that MJK sings properly tell me what the word that I used to think was "full" (so full of it) really is, because it sounds like he's saying fool. And if the band only did with properly spoken english then MJK's lisp would get him fired (noticeable in Wings)... It's called approximate rhyme, people.

If they are using drugs as a metaphor (or literally attacking them), this might be a possibility, who knows. Just my gut instinct after the first few listens, and the many listens since don't rule it out.
1st time "Liar? Lawyer? Mirror, show me what's the difference."
2nd time "A Line along your mirror for you, what's the difference?"
Just a suggestion. The above don't fit perfectly, but from my experience, MJK doesn't always enunciate perfectly, especially when he's aiming for a little extra meaning.

i think i got everything right but the last line doesn't sound right....
Who are you to wave your finger
You musta been out your head
eye hole deep in muddy waters
you practically raised the dead
Rob the grave to slow the cradle
then burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass so
dont go tossing your stones around
You musta been high
You musta been high
You musta been
Foot in mouth and head up ass
so whatcha talkin bout
difficult to dance round this one
till you pull it out boy
You musta been so high
You musta been so high
Steel, borrow, reaper,
savior, shady inference
kangaroo done hung the juror
with the innocent
now you weep in shades of chosen indigo
got lemon juice up in your, high, eye
when you pissed all over my black kettle
you musta been high, high
you musta been high, high
Who are you to wave your finger
so full of it
eyeballs deep in muddy waters
fuckin hypocrite
Liar, lawyer, mirror show me
whats the difference
kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent
now you weep in shades of chosen indigo
got lemon juice up in your, high, eye
when you pissed all over my black kettle
you musta been
So who are you to wave your finger
who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me
you must have been out your mind
You weep in shades of indigo
Shed without a reason
You weep in shades of indigo
Liar, lawyer, mirror, for you what's the difference?
Kangaroo, he's stoned,
he’s guilty as the government
Now...
You weep in shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye
Now when you pissed all over my black kettle
You must've been high!
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Got to believe
you must have been out your mind

I've posted this a few times and no one responds.
I think there is only one utterance of the word "kangaroo" in the whole song and that's on the last repetition of that line. Here's how I think it goes:
Kinged the rude and hung the jury
With the innocent
Caned the rude and hung the guilty
With the innocent
Kangaroo be stoned he's guilty
Ask the government
The first two fit more into Maynard's writing style... knuckle, finger, elbow, shoulder - missing opportunities / leaving opportunities behind... king the rude (put them in a position of power) vs. cane the rude (put them in their place)... the last one really doesn't fit into the picture, but it makes for interesting conversation. Stoned kangaroos?
What should we do
With this stoned kangaroo
The chief says we should book 'im

I understand "eyeballs deep in muddy waters" and then "My balls deep in muddy waters" in the end of the song.
