Maybe it's cause I wasn't expecting much... but that show was pretty awesome. The grudge is (possibly) my favorite Tool song... so to hear it live again for the first time since 2002 was a pretty amazing feeling.
The new stage set up looks alright, but some of the visuals were a bit cheesy. I'm not opposed to the whole 'looping cg' stuff Tool does, even when its super derivative. But some of tonight's stuff looked a little rough or a little early? CG that might a few more passes.
There as some legit new visuals though...like the red, undulating, steel waves.
I have watched a lot of Tool live over the past few years and this show definitely felt a bit different; it seemed like Maynard was a bit more into it than he has been recently. I noticed it particularly in songs like 46+2 and Stinkfist, two of which he's recently been kicking back through. It was a great feeling to hear him joking a bit, and seemingly excited to perform.
There were TONS of fuck ups though, the most I've ever witnessed in a Tool concert (either that I've attended, or seen video of)... but I really liked it. They were raw as fuck, and watching them fix their mistakes real time is actually an incredibly interesting and impressive sight.
Some of the new jammy stuff was strange, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love it. My experience with Tool's forays into electronic soundscaping has always left me feeling pretty optimistic about them incorporating more and more electronics into their sound.
The crowd was pretty obnoxious, and unfortunately, it didn't seem they were that into it. Then again... I was pretty far back in the crowd. Still, I feel like we would've gotten another song if the crowd was a bit more receptive. At the end of the show, I think Danny signaled to the rest that it was definitely over ... because until he actually walked right up to him, Adam kept his guitar slung over his shoulder, seemingly ready to play more.

so so good. so fucking good.
agreed, lots of fuckups though - the hell happened at the beginning of AJ's solo in Jambi?
dig the new lighting, makes the stage look way bigger and compensates for no video screens on the band.
especially loved the full white stage lighting right in the flightpath of planes.
crowd around me were for the most part awesome, except for the cialis commercial happening in front of us. i was also really far back.
i basically shat myself when they started teasing no quarter.

The band came out dressed as Led Zepellin. Danny with his fake moustache as Bonham was gold.
They proceeded to play No Quarter and I lost it. So good. Right into the grudge then parabol/parabola then opiate...damn
Adams talk box failed during Jambi and he got pretty pissed
Visuals were awesome..especially the cathedral look during Opiate. Nice touch. So glad I made the drive for this show

Here's a pic of the Opiate Cathedral look. Also that's Maynard dressed as plant and Danny dressed as Bonham

Also Adam played No Quarter with a double neck SG to channel his inner Jimmy Page. That's all for me goodnight!

I've seen that in countless recaps, and I must say I've never once heard anyone associated with the band refer to it as b'boom or anything to do with Crimson. That always confuses me.
It's just Danny doing a solo. Tonight's set list just says "DC Solo w/Synth".

Repost from the other thread, sorry, seems like only activity from people at the show is happening in here, not the thread for this specific show:
So good!!! My 28th Tool show, just got back to the hotel.
The setlist was a welcome change, such an absolute TREAT to get No Quarter, The Grudge, Parabol, Parabola, and the extended Opiate.
Tool sounded amazing, as always.
Do have to say though, the crowd was maybe one of the worst I've had to deal with. Saw 2 fights, a person shit and piss all over themselves and their clothing, people that were saying how they flew out and paid just to disrupt the show....WTF is up with that?!
Aside from that, amazing times with amazing friends! Thank you Tool!
Also, if ANYONE has an extra Tempe poster I'll pay good money for it. I waited in line for hours only to find they only had 600 of them printed and that they didn't set any limit on what a person could buy, so it was told to me that someone bought a whole rack of them to resell on Ebay. If someone can help me out, I can definitely help them out with whatever price wanted and maybe a cool trade or something?! Shoot me an email: [email protected]

So the cell service last night was horrible. I moved around trying to make it work to no avail. Talked to a bunch of folks and it was effecting everyone.

Yeah, that's typical at festivals and other big events I've found. The existing network just can't cope, and no one gets any coverage.

I have no idea about last night, but danny was definitely mixing b'boom into his solos last year. Unmistakabru.

There's definitely a section that takes inspiration from B'boom no doubt, but calling it a cover is a bit of a stretch.

Danny takes his favorite parts of songs and mixes it all into his solos......if memory serves correctly.

The festival, itself, was a bit weird. All the round and round with the city, the eventual loss of the lasers, and a few other odd occurrences.
Dating back to May, it's been a long path just to get there.
We got there on Wednesday, and were "show ready" around 6am on Saturday, so I'm glad to finally get out of there.
I think the results were good, though.

very detailed review to come when I have the time.... however some notes:
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE.
no quarter was amazing as well.
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE
parabol and parabola! the ending was absolutely epic. I cried.
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE
opiate extension was similar to 2014 tour. really cool.
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE.
the "new jam" they played was similar to what they did in 2014 however it is longer and more complex. this is absolutely the thing that will be on the new album. no doubt about it.
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE.
the visuals were magnificent. lasers not necessary. BEST junior performance ever. seriously. the new setup really lets him shine. kudos buddy.
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE.
will go into detail on this later. but the visuals, jesus christ... they re-did them. even for the staple songs like jambi and aenema, stinkfist, etc. all brand new visuals.
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE.
the festival setting sucked. fucking linkin park fans moshing and talking and trying their best to ruin the experience.
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE.
jambi was an epic fail. talk-box solo obviously did not work. adam was pissed. the entire solo was done without the talk box portion.
THE MOTHER FUCKING GRUDGE.
...did i mention they played the grudge?

Congrats to you and anyone else on having your Grudge cherry popped. Some of the best moments of my life hearing/seeing that song performed. I gotta say, I spent a lot of the last decade wondering if the decision to keep certain songs out was simply because certain people physically could not perform them.
Not the case. Maynard absolutely crushed it. Thirteen years is a long af.

Tool was raw a f@ck! Which I didn't mind at all, made it more personal I think, I know Adams a perfectionist but you also have to admire the beauty in the inperfections. Great show, awesome work on the lighting, really cool with the row of lights off to the sides of the stage, props Junior, and to video for some cool changes

Re: General Tool Discussion
Tool was raw a f@ck! Which I didn't mind at all, made it more personal I think, I know Adams a perfectionist but you also have to admire the beauty in the inperfections. Great show, awesome work on the lighting, really cool with the row of lights off to the sides of the stage, props Junior, and to video for some cool changes
