Here's a whole background on the subject http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippy
and through reading it, I admit that there are some aspects of the hippy culture that has flourished throughout the 80's, 90's and beyond, but the lable hippy, really isn't prevalent as it once was.
So with that in mind, I just don't think that MJK is saying that in the lyrics of Vicarious. But who knows, (well he does) I may be proven wrong some day when the lyrics are released, but until then, I'm going with "happy haze" which makes the most sense to me and is what I've heard all along.
|
I think you're taking the word hippie out of it's context. The phrase is, hippie haze. Meaning stoners. Meaning vegging out and staring blankly into the TV. At least that's what I get out of it. Add to the line, shouldn't have to say it all again, as if the people hes addressing have a memory problem....
just my thoughts about it.

Oh, I wasn't replying to anything he said in particular. I just keep checking the "offical" lyrics (the ones he has posted on the site) and it still says (drown on grave and ground/??), where instead it could say ...(drum/drown) on grave and ground.....

I sometimes hear this as "Pull your halo on out your head please and give a listen", as if Maynard is asking the self-righteous among us to admit that they are
as fascinated by bad news as the rest of us.
I could be way off base, though......

Why keep people seeing these lyrics as anything better than other guesses? Lol. Thinking about it is funny. They're just a random compilation of wrong thoughts.

During the show in Honolulu i had noticed that this line sounded differently a bit. Also i noticed during a listen that it sounds the same on the second repetition on this line. It sounds like it is saying... la, la la, la, la, la-Lullaby.
After thinking for a bit about the lyrics preceeding this line, it actually makes a bit of sense. Death rattle... Lullaby; Both being infantile references.

I can't deny what you heard at a show, since I wasn't there (and I didn't notice anything different about that part when I saw them) but I'm definitely not hearing 'lullaby' in the recording.

Uhhh, Huh?"Death rattle" as a phrase refers to someone's dying breath, usually accompanied by some sort of cough or other forceful exhalation, and has nothing to do with infants, infancy, babies, etc.. unless you're referring to SIDS...

"She used a poison in his tea
and kissed him goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til' someone dies
Don't look me at like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother, holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky cryin',
"Why, oh why?"
Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.
Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Will write us the story so
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so
Why can't we just admit it?
Blood like rain come down
Drum on grave and ground
Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal
Sing to the death rattle
La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie (x4)
Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out
Your happy place and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been ...
We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I.
For me, the hardest line to hear in that song is the one following "Pull your head...," which I find pleasantly ironic due to the fact that the listener is being asked to "give a listen." :)
Edit: Added underlines because the bolds weren't doing it. Also, sorry again if these have been posted this way and proven wrong. As I said, I havent read the whole goddamn twenty-two pages. :)
|
I think this song is a breeze, compaired to the others. I think JesseAK is near perfect here.
My 2 discreponsies(sp) are "..the brave nor bold WERE RIGHT, AS THE STORIE'S TOLD." and also, (and this is a little anal,) "...we just admit it....we just admit."
Other than that, cudos on the "Pull your head on out your happy place and.."
This was my first detailed look at this song.

yeah, i always thought that the bad-ass beats thereafter had something to do with how the rain (of blood) pattered the ground (in a cemetary ...or maybe a battlefield, at war? sounds like we're marchin, eh?). what d'ya think?

I always thought it was
Pull your head on out your headpiece and give a listen...
Like a headpiece that, say, an anchor might wear on the fox?

I just want to explain why I think things are how they are.
First, I think it is " Part vampire, part warrior, carnivore, and voyeur. Stare at the transmittal, SINK TO THE DEPTHS RIGHT OUT OF LI-LI-LI-LI-LI-LI-LI-LIFE...." Yeah, I know you can't hear any "f" sound in there but it's certanly possible.
Also, I still think it is, "Gradualist, at best you're designed to believe in angels in the hearts of men, Pull your head on out; you'll hear, pay reason, give a listen, Shouldn't have to say i all again." To explain this one... I think this a rip on Darwinian gradualism, as opposed to 'punctuated equilibrium' (as described in 'forty-six & 2')... It still supports evolution, but in a different way. Do your research, and tell me what you think!

Ok folks, here are the exact lyrics:
Eye on the the TV
'Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be, like...
"Killed by the husband"
"Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son"
"She used a poison
in his tea...kissed him goodbye"
THAT'S my kind of story
It's no fun 'til someone dies
Don't look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying,
"Why, oh why?"
Cause I need to watch things die... from a distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
YOU ALL NEED IT TOO, DON'T LIE
Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Neither the brave nor bold
WILL WRITE US the story's told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
I need to watch things die... from a good safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so...
Why can't we just admit it?
Blood like rain falling down
DRUM ON GRAVE AND GROUND
Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and Voyuer
Stare at the TRANSMITTAL
Sing to the death rattle
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie (x4)
Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
But pull your head on out
YOUR HEAD PLEASE, and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive... so it is, so it's always been
We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

Maybe this has been said - I dunno - I'm not going to read through 17 pages to find out.
"Stare at the sensemittal - sing to the death rattle"
It's a portmanteau - taking part of one word and combining it with part of another word to create a word more tailored to the context of what your saying.
Sensmittal = Sensation+Transmittal
transmittal
n : the act of sending a message; causing a message to be transmitted [syn: transmission, transmitting]
Stare at the television signal, the show, whatever, that makes you feel a certain way - that elicits certain senses in your mind - your emotions. The broadcasting of an emotional trigger.
"Stare at the sensemittal"
EDIT: Honestly, I hear the "S" sound clear as anything at the beginning of the word... - I mean... is this really even debatable? I'm certainly not the only one that hears this, right?

Good job Benjamin - once again we see eye to eye - my wife was working on it with me and on her first listen she thought it was
"Pull your head on out your happy ass and give a listen' but - that couldn't account for the AYZ sound - on the other hand, 'Pull your head on out your happy haze and give a listen' matches spot on for the phonetics and makes total literal sense. - Though I do concede that it may be 'hippie haze' and not 'happy haze' - both make sense and it's hard to tell which one is said for sure.
Also, take this into consideration, doubters:
cred‧u‧lous /ˈkrɛdʒələs/ Pronunciation[krej-uh-luhs]
–adjective
1. willing to believe or trust too readily, esp. without proper or adequate evidence; gullible.
He's saying you have to be blindly gullible to believe there are angels within the hearts of men - pull your head out of your happy haze and pay some actual attention. There's very poor evidence to support the idea that our hearts are good.
Kudos.
Now about the 'sensemittal'...

Oh, and I'm banking on it being
"Eyes on the TV 'cause tragedy thrills me" - I just can't not hear the 's' at the end of the "I" sound
"Eyes on the TV"

The comma might need to go after the "pull ur head on out," then its repeated, making sure we know what he wants us to pull out. Then he says listen, he doesnt want to say it ALL AGAIN
Credulous at best
