Re: Expectations of live shows?

Honestly, more Chet Zar/Cam de Leon input on the live art would be quite interesting. No big bands will play small venus out here anymore (minus Slipknot but...bleh) so just as with the NIN show, I'll probably be seeing them at the Savvis which means a less personal experience but, it also gives the opportunity for a massive array of art, lighting, projections, etc... In any case, it'll be damn unforgettable anyway, even though it's still a tremendously long time away before they come to St. Louis. -.-;;

When they do a tour for the album, the shows will deliver the goods.

The bulk of the set, a few here and there sprinkled amidst their older hits? I'm curious to see what kind of visual themes they're going to be working with this time around. I honestly don't know how they could top the Alex Grey backdrops/screen projections. If anyone could though I suppose it would be them. Let's hope it doesn't get Bono extravaganza-like though. Wouldn't expect that from them though. Actually I'd prefer more minimalist this time around, emphasizing music over everything else. The syncopated light show and color themes should remain intact though imo. Give me your thoughts on what you'd like to see visually as well as the setlist.
Just like last tour, or any other band, It will be 2/3 new and 1/3 old

At the time it was damned exciting to see them in such an intimate venue, but when I went to subsequent shows later on in the tour... well, compared to their later shows, the Berkeley shows sucked. No video screens, no Alex Grey backdrops, and they just didn't have the musical and technical formula down right yet. Don't get me wrong, it fuckin' rocked to no end, but it's indescribable to be there when they extended Schism and Lateralus to the synched-lights and video images.

Again, I say they accomplished in the Lateralus tour to do to the eyes what they do to the ears. I want my goddamned live DVD so bad.

Ack, I'm all nostalic right now, watching a bootleg of that absolutely beautiful tour. I can't fathom how they're gonna top themselves this time... but I know they're gonna.
You are correct. If memory serves, it was the second show of the tour after Anchorage, AK. I was at the 5th or 6th show in Billings, MT.

I doubt they will tour Europe with a half hearted visual setup.

Fesitvals perhaps, but not the full blown tour...

Re: Expectations of live shows?

I really don't know what to expect this time around.

It'll be visually exciting, I'm sure, but what that entails....we shall see what we shall see.

I wonder what Maynard's set-up will be. I understand he doesn't like to play in front of Danny's drums because of the volumes they play at. Plus, Maynard hates bright, flashing lights, so I think he'll be in darkness again. Probably behind everyone's backline , so he's able to hear himself and he doesn't have any stagewash from Adam and Danny and Justin. I hope they don't put Danny in a plexiglass box, like some bands have done. Haha....that would be funny, though. Although it would be even funnier if they put Maynard in a plexiglass box centrestage. Suspended above the crowd like David Blaine. Hahahaha. It could happen.

It'll be interesting how they work out the practicalities of playing so loud on stage.
I'm sure the sound engineers hate them, but that's what they like.

Maybe they will play in the round.

Re: Expectations of live shows?

The absolute best Tool show I've seen was at the begining of their '01 tour. They opened with Stinkfist played the extended version with the extra solos and all that. But the really awesome thing about it was that throughout the show they would come back to the main riff from Stinkfist. So they would be playing The Grudge break into a solo section and then transition into the main riff from Stinkfist proceed to rock our brains out then tie it back into The Grudge, kind of like a 'rock opera' Tool style. The did that for almost every song. Maynard never left the shadow of the small video screen, and AJ and JC just stood in place like statues for most of the night.

It was all about the art both musically and visually. It was almost like the band didn't want to be on stage they just wanted to 'express' through their music. I know that's a really shitty review because I really do not have the words to express what was going on, anyone that was in Reunion Arena in Dallas you all know what I'm talking about. It really was a religious experience. Anyway, if they did something like that, open with a 'classic' and keep that as the theme while they transition to other songs it would be most enjoyable.

Re: Expectations of live shows?

My expectations: Playing around 3/4 of the album on the mini-tour, generally sticking to the same songs each time. They'll also throw in a few of the radio hits from older albums as well as one (maybe two) random, lesser-played songs. As far as visually speaking, I have no idea what to hope for, except that there will be video screens with some kind of craziness played on them as always.

My hopes (this is a pipe dream I'm sure): This is more for the actual full tour. But I hope they play roughly 2/3 of the new material, a hit from each previous release (opiate, prison sex, 46&2, lateralus, for example), 3 or 4 less often played songs (jerk-off, undertow, 4 degrees, pushit), a cover or two (no quarter, stranglehold, you lied). Visually speaking- Hopefully a setup that revives their stage presence. I miss the energetic Maynard, up in front, going apeshit to the music. New and different stage decor/on-screen visuals.

Almost every song, they would use it at different times. Like when they played Euology they played the entire song like the record but the 'outro' was Stinkfist and it transitioned into something else. I think the highlight was when AJ was doing the guitar solo to parabol/a and they broke into it the whole place went nuts. Tool rose to an entire new level in my book with that show. I mean I knew they were talented but that was something else. I'm seriously tearing up just thinking about that show. There were 6 of us, some of which had never seen Tool before but have seen them since, to this day we only talk about 'the show'.

Paraflux, owns a stetson and rides a horse *waves from Dallas*. Do you ever go to any Dallas/Ft. Worth shows? I've only seen Tool in the DFW metroplex, I'm curious how they shows change when they play other cities.
