Setups you've heard 10K days on....(Audiophiles!!!)

I was wondering (for those audiophiles out there) what are some of the nice setups that you've heard the album on.

This is what I"ve got....Energy C7 Floorstanders being powered by an Arcam A-50 and a Rotel CD player.....connected w/ Verstarr cables.

I cringe whenever I hear "iPod". To me that's like condensing the sheer magnitude of an 88-instrument symphony orchestra into two shitty techno ear pieces.

There's nothing wrong with portables while commuting as long as you upgrade from the stock earphones. The ones that come with iPod are the worst sounding shits ever produced by a legitimate company...the ones that came with my original Game Boy 15 years ago sounded better. I have a problem with iPod itself and just sold one I had bought a couple months ago after getting sick of being forced to do everything through iTunes, an extremely shaky piece of software, and the thing getting scratched every time I looked at it.

Hand-cranked Victrola with custom soundbox, sliver oxide stylus bar, and engraved soundarm.

All I'm getting is a rather loud screeching sound followed by a pronounced *THUMP*. This album sounds awful. Maybe I should try 78 rpm instead? The sound just ain't swingin' like I thought it would.

Sorry--just felt like it...

Yeah, us Yanks have no idea what kind of cool superior audiophile equipment could be available in New Zealand though. You could have all kinds of secret technology hidden and only have to hide it from the LOTR tourists. Haha.

Besides it sounds impressive--I would never question you!

Re: Setups you've heard 10K days on....(Audiophiles!!!)

Correct where I'm wrong please, I need to educate myself as far as audio quality and this seems like it may be a good thread to ask some stuff

Being a CD that isn't in 5.1, doesn't it sound more distorted on surround sound systems? What is an ideal setup for playing CD? Simplying finding 2 high quality stereo speakers and a receiver?

I play it through my Xbox 360 and my Onkyo 1000-watt 7.1 home theater, but on stereo since it is CD. I've been hesitant to use surround speakers for a source that isn't 5.1 or higher.
---
I also must say I thoroughly enjoy the sound on my Shure noise canceling headphones I got as a gift, they're definitely worth the $300 my dad paid

Koss headphones (better bass than Sennheiser).

Mark Levinson 14 speaker, 300 watt RMS system in the car.

Cannot play Tool on home stereo because neighbours would collapse on ground with ears and arses bleeding from what surely must be the music of Satan himself. Not to mention I would be revealed to them as something other than a conservative family man who works hard and loves his wife and daughter (though is occassionally known to yell at or give the dogs a kick in the ass).

Good headphones most of the time, but when I want the neighbours to enjoy too, I just put it through my logitech z-5500. Might sound shitty to you because it's logitech but try one ;)

You are correct Sprial. A CD that's recorded in stereo (as this one is) needs to be reproduced in stereo. All you do when you take a stereo disc and play it in 5.1 is create a fake 5.1 that sounds mushy and shitty in general. The basically take any out of phase signals coming out and re-direct them through the back and center speakers...and the cutoffs aren't set right for any sub either.

Definitely stick to playing it through stereo bud.

I also must say I thoroughly enjoy the sound on my Shure noise canceling headphones I got as a gift, they're definitely worth the $300 my dad paid

God this album owns on headphones eh?? Damn.....

Re: Setups you've heard 10K days on....(Audiophiles!!!)

a modest but amazing sounding system non the less... impressed my paradigm and marantz fans for sure... chaintech av710 using fubar to unlock the wolfgang dac, running optically to a sony dav s-amplifier receiver through behringer monitor 1cs and a custom sub using monster wire... cost me about $150 sounds like $2,000

That's two very nice systems.
I'm guessing you've done lots of upgrading over the years.
BTW, how much was your sub(Martin Logan)?

Oh yeah!

Power Conditioning/Delivery: Richard Gray Power Company "Substation" isolation transformer and a Richard Gray "400 Pro" for perfect power

Amp/Receiver: B&K AVR507 7.1 THX Receiver

CD/DVD player: Sony DVPS-9000ES SACD/DVD player

Speakers: Boston Acoustics 7.1 Hidden Theater System
3 - VRI793 front speakers
2 - VRI595 surrounds
2 - VRI580 back channels
4 - Sub10F subwoofers being driven by 2 Boston SA1 Amplifiers (The front 2 subs are wired as the .1 channel, the back 2 subs are wired to the left and right surround channels.

When/ or if live DVD ever comes out, I have a 100" Stewart Filmscreen "Firehawk", and an Epson Cinema 800 projector.

Obviously, "10,000 days" is a CD, so it's in 2-channel, but the B&K, with THX post processing, does a great job mixing the disc in multi-channel. The CD is very well recorded, probably one of the best rock recordings ever. I'm glad Tool mixed this CD with more "bottom-end" (that's bass) than on "Lateralus". Lateralus (great album of course) sounded a little thin, and edgy. They got it right with this CD, much warmer sounding. I had a chance to hang out with Billy Howerdel (APC) right after "13th Step" came out, and we were talking about recording techniques, and he mentioned during final mixing of 13th Step, that he added an extra 1/2 dB in the bottom end to take the edge off.

Cheers
