Elgyn, everything about the dog photo is just perfect. I love the branches growing out of the plaster and the dangerous electrical wiring!

SSS, I hope the expert critique you won in that contest went well for you.

Re: Photo of the Day

Took this one last night. For some reason I'm reminded of Cloud City from The Empire Strikes Back. I hope this looks alright on other monitors. I'm replacing my stone age LCD (that I got for free back when LCD's were "fancy") and getting an IPS LCD very soon.

that is really cool, hushy. looks like snow in the background. normally it might bother me but i think it works really well that the bottom of the car bleeds in with the foreground. maybe thats a monitor thing, though.

yeah, it wasn't my intention at first, but when I got home I decided to edit it that way. It reminded me of an 80's ad--there's some kind of headline at the top and then the text goes in the black space.

Although, my friend was shooting with me and I was using his lens and vice versa, and to my chagrin I think his version came out a little better:

Re: Photo of the Day

Dying Wombs of Dehiscence

From The Prophet

Death XXVII
By Khalil Gibran

Then Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death."

And he said:

You would know the secret of death.

But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?

The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;

And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.

Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.

Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.

Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?

Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Re: Photo of the Day

Love the owl photo RaG3aH0liC - they're hard to see for a start, so to get it in focus with the flash is a good effort.

Here's my mates recording studio:

It's 4 photos stitched together in Photoshop, and I've done it the studio's website, which I'm working on at www.newnoiserecording.com.au.

Re: Photo of the Day

Rios Apurimac y Tambobamba, Peru

ENTRANCE OF THE RIVERS

Beloved of the rivers, beset
By azure water and transparent drops,
Like a tree of veins your spectre
Of dark goddess biting apples:
And then awakening naked
To be tattooed by the rivers,
And in the wet heights your head
Filled the world with new dew.

Water rose to your waist,
You are made of wellsprings
And lakes shone on your forehead.
From your sources of density you drew
Water like vital tears
And hauled the riverbeds to the sand
Across the planetary night,
Crossing rough, dilated stone,
Breaking down on the way
All the salt of geology,
Cutting through forests of compact walls
Dislodging the muscles of quartz.

Pablo Neruda
Santiago, Chile
1950

Resting on the Apurimac
(after a 4,000 ft descent from left, preparing for a 5,000 ft ascent to right)

I ABSOLUTELY love that photo. It almost looks like Chicago is in the background.

Just more incredible work. I'm always in awe at the way you can turn something we see pretty often into something so beautifully unique.

Fantastic work, SSS.

Re: Photo of the Day

a ways back in this thread (pg 22 or 23), I took photos at Luray Caverns. Here are a few newer ones
Dream Lake - the water is about 16 inches deep to show an amazing reflection of the stalactites above

Re: Photo of the Day

Here is another of dream lake (w/different white balance settings) -- trying to find settings that work in the cave is the hardest part, but the scenery is out of this world

this photo is looking up a 30 ft / 10m column - the pics don't show you the proper scale

That's awesome, I didn't know I had such a distinctive style.

I love the photo of the Chili dog - Great timing.

I like your first w/b setting better, rage. its amazing what a little adjustment can do for a shot. heres some mandatory fall photography, basically the same shot with white balance adjustments.

i put my cheap digital camera's lens up against the glass of my friend's fish tank, snapped a pic without realizing the flash was on, and forgot about it. This is how it turned out. i wish that i owned a fancy decent camera., but i found this curious nonetheless. :)
