Yo...Couple questions: Anyone know of Edison, NJ? I'm staying there on Sat night. It's about 30 miles away from Manhattan, little more to the actual venue. Should it be pretty easy to get a cab for that distance? Where I live that's about $40 for 2 people I think. Train tickets are surprisingly expensive as shit for the distance. $100-160 for a round trip for 2. Or, would anyone reccomend trying to just drive on in there? I've never been to NYC, not sure about parking and all that. AND FINALLY....what are some good bars nearby the City Center? After the show, might stay in town for awhile, or just go back to good ol Edison for the night. Thanks in advance to anyone who tries to help out.

try this for getting there and back. it will take you about 30 minutes or more to get to NYC from Edison. Instead of driving into NYC (which is NOT a good idea, traffic is HELL there) --- drive from Edison to Secaucus. You want to drive to Secaucus Diner on Paterson-Plank Road. http://mapblast.com/(45yhsc55bjalzr4...outeUnit=Miles
I can help you figure out exactly where it is if you do this.
Anyway, if you drive to this diner in Secaucus there is an NJ Transit BUS that is less than $2.00 that will take you DIRECTLY to the Port Authority in NYC. Just park your car in the diner parking lot, that's where I always park and never have a problem.
This way, you are still driving but not all the way into NYC and you are saving money by not taking the train. The bus stops running I think around midnight though, so if you stay in NYC later you could at least get a cab BACK to your car, which I'm sure will not be too expensive. This is the way I've always done it if I didn't feel like taking the Greyhound from here.

You can take the New Jersey Transit train from Edison to NYC Penn Station for $15.50 per person roundtrip. A cab would be REAL expensive and I wouldn't drive into the city. I'll be taking the train from Rahway.
EDIT: Another reason to take NJ Transit: you can drink on the train!

this sounds a bit better option than mine, but what if they plan on staying awhile after the show and there is no late train?

8 days away... nice. So, I'm probably splitting an expensive room 4 ways with friends, or, I might just train in on NJ Transit each night (North Jersey Coast Line.) Anyone else coming up from NJ, we could meet on the train with drinks and head over to the City Center together. I'll be hopping on the train in Belmar and heading up to Penn Station.
I'll be taking the train in from Rahway. Which day are you going?

Still searching for a ticket. Please understand the emotional stress and agony of what I am going through right now. Please, if anybody has any connections to an extra seat... I have cash and can offer MUCH more. I'm not looking for scalpers fees but maybe we can negotiate. I've been searching day and night.
Seriously, we got an arena tour coming this fall with a bigger setlist

Thanks for the heads up, I was only looking at Amtrak. Appreciation.

What are the best places to sleep for FREE in NYC ?
Train stations ? Central Park ? Any suggestion welcome.
I sure the hell wouldn't sleep in Central Park! I would definitely think the best place would be in Penn Station. It's well-lit and always a decent number of people around, so nothing would happen to you there.

Thanks. But...$72 at least, for one night ? That sounds like a lot to me. I've seen a couple hostels that charge around $15-$20 for a bed in a dormitory.

thx for the advice.
When do bars shut in NYC on a Saturday night ? I might as well just drink the night away...

when you consider the location, it is well worth it. only about 10 minutes WALK to the show and is close to everything -- Times Square, Port Authority, Central Park, etc. I'd rather pay that price and be able to walk anywhere i need to go with no problem.

I'll be taking the train in from Rahway. Which day are you going?
I'm going both days. I'm gonna consider staying in the city one night but with the train schedule I can easily make it home both nights, we'll see. NJCL goes through Rahway, I was thinking about taking the train between 5 and 6, getting to the city at 7 or 8. Which day and what time were you planning on heading up?
I would say probably the best place to sleep (if you have no other options) is on the subway train, theres always people riding them no matter what time so if you sleep on a train no one pays too much attention. Parks are no good because you can get a ticket for criminal tresspassing, not supposed to be in a park past certain hour, depends which park sometimes 9pm sometimes midnight.

I'm going both days too, but I'm going alone on Friday. So if you want, let's meet up on the train on Friday. Bring a couple beers and get a cheap buzz going before we even hit the city. I'm good with heading in between 5 and 6. We can nail down specifics as it gets closer. If anyone else wants to meet up on the train or later at a bar near City Center, let us know.

anybody who needs a place to stay should see if the bigapple hostel still has room. they are 35 a day, and by the look of google maps about a 10 minute walk from central park as well as the venue for the show

sounds good to me, we'll lock plans down next week. I have myself and 3 others who will be down to have a good time, we'll strap on a backpack of beers and catch you at the Rahway stop for sure.
Anyone who can help......I have tickets for the show on the 20th and was going to stay at a Hotel near the Meadowlands in Secacus(about $300 a night cheaper), take the bus into the city from the hotel and take a cab back to the hotel after having a couple of drinks after the show.
1. How hard is it going to be for me to get a cab into Jersey from NY, especially at 2-3am?
2. What will the cab ride cost? It's only 4 miles from midtown.
Thanks
I guess you've already had a bunch of replies to this, but I just wanted to say that I would definitely NOT take a cab from NY to Secaucus. That would cost you an arm and a leg, and probably your first born.
There are shuttle vans that run all night long that go from the Port Authority back over to Jersey, and vice versa. They cost $2 each way. I'm not sure how far they go, since I always get off as soon as I get into Union City (right on the other side of the tunnel, b/t Secaucus and NY), but you could always get off and then get a cab once you're closer to the hotel.
Anyway, that's how I always get back and forth to the city: those cheap little vans.

Also, is anyone planning on going to the Alex Grey gallery before the shows? I'm going both nights, but I'll be by myself on Friday, so I'm looking for something to do. Seems like art and beer are the best options.

Toolarmy has people talking about Heartland Brewery before each show, as well as the Alex Grey led CoSM tour before Saturday's. I've never been to Heartland but I've been known to drink beers so it's all good to me.

I plan on being there at 6:30 for the Alex Grey tour. Should begin a perfect night

New York is mad expensive. I got my tix for face value, so if I felt the need to justify overpriced snobby microbrews, that's all I need! Expensive or not, it will be full of hyped up Tool fans so I think the atmosphere will be great. You can always order sodas and dump in mini bottles if alcohol is your poison.
I JUST GOT 3 TICKETS SATURDAY NIGHT!@!! HOLY FUCKEN SHIT!!! IM GOING!!! WOOOOOOOOOO! TOOL!!!!!!!!
HOLY FUCKEN SHIT!! MIRACLES DO HAPPEN!!!!!! I CANT BELIEVE IT!!! OMG!!!! TOOL!! ORCHESTRA ROW O!!!! 15TH ROW!! HOLY FUCKEN SHIT!@!!! IM GOING!!!!
WE ALL NEED TO MEET UP YOU FUCKERSSSS!!!!!!
aww! everyone hurry before the scalpers get them!!!!
