uhh, isn't the album version a bunch of out of sync babble ANYWAY? what does it matter if he isn't singing about DMT encrusted donuts, and instead rants about michael jackson? as long as it"fits" together, it's fine.. also , when I saw rosetta in '09, the lyrics were spot on, with good tempo and pitch

I love the production of Tool shows from the Lateralus and 10,000 Days tours and I can't say that one album tour is better than the other. I do miss Maynard up front in costume though.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

I'm sure if they played Third Eye for ~240 shows straight, that a great many of you would be bitching as much as you are now about Rosetta Stoned. But yeah, I for one very much welcome the return of Thrid Eye. I DO very much enjoy Rosetta Stoned though. I think it (especially with Lost Keys) was quite impressive during the summer shows of '07.

I'm from the Rosetta Stoned "great on the album, so-so live" camp personally. Not that they perform it badly, it's just that Maynard's vocals are too hard to reproduce live, and for whatever reason that bothers me.

Yeah I'd agree to that.

Rosetta is awesome live. I like the babbling, and the visuals are tremendous. and plus (sorry Adam), Justin and Danny really shine on that song.

.... please don't remind me.

What the fuck was Tool thinking when they decided to do the EXACT same setlist for EVERY SINGLE SHOW with no exceptions, AND it was the exact same setlist as the 2007 fall tour before that (minus wings/10 000!!)

baffles my mind when I think about it.

on the other hand, that trip was still the most life changing experience I have ever had. what a crazy summer.

uh, no - it's steady, with a strong rhythmic element, and definitely not out of sync with what the other guys are doing. have you ever tried singing along? it's pretty easy once you read through the lyrics a few times

i don't care if he changes lyrics, just as long as he tries a little bit harder to stay steady with the band - usually his psychobabble is just distracting, though

Ummm...open for Tool in the United States. Please.

Saw someone reference Birds of Tokyo...maybe Junior...a while back. The singer of Birds is also in this band.

I'm casting my vote. Tool. Karnivool. US. Winter. '11.

To be honest I don't think Karnivool are the type of band Tool would tour with.

Agreed. I can see the sort of progish connection there, but something sets off my "meh... I don't know about this" sense with Karnivool, and always has.

I know it starts with the name. But it goes beyond that to the entire vibe of the group. I don't know something just feels... off.

Also, not to keep beating a dead horse but I still can't get over the ambivalence regarding Rosetta Stoned live. Different strokes and all that but man, I can't imagine that (on most nights anyway) not doing it for you.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Not saying the peeps that don't appreciate Rosetta live aren't the "Musical minded" (Says the idiot on the Tool forum), but if you've played an instrument for any fair amount of time, the song would molest your mind in a sweet, sweet orgy of syncopation and time signature poon. The notes aren't complicated like John Petrucci on an acid binger or anything, but when you realize how it all comes together, it's impressive that it makes any musical sense.

(I think the 50 second tack-on ending was basically Danny Carey saying, "Lets show some bitches what's up.)

MUSIC IS AN EXPERIMENT.

(If you're doing it right.)

It's certainly not the end of the world if they play it, I'm just not a huge fan of the vocals through the megaphone shtick. It's cool to mix it up like on Stinkfist, but for an entire song, it kind of grates on me. (despite my avatar!)

This probably stems where I saw a rough version or two on the 10K Warm Up Tour, including when it was the opener in Dallas. It was a bit of a jackhammer right out of the gate.

Funny you say that, because I have the exact opposite opinion.

My first ever tool show on the same mini-tour you're speaking of, in toronto.

the first tool song i ever heard live? lost keys into rosetta.

it has had a special place in my heart ever since.

My first ever live song was Intolerance. Imagine my joy at hearing it at 18, 19th and 20th shows nearly 20 years later.

Oh yes. They did something similar in Duluth (in fact I'm pretty sure Duluth was the first city they busted that out in) and holy shit... it was unreal.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

I saw them open w/ Lipan Conjuring on the mini tour =)

Is there any youtube footage of this alternate version of Lost Keys?

And come on, you guys have to admit it was pretty damn awesome how the lasers kicked in during the rhythm section breakdown of Rosetta during that leg of the tour.

On another note, I dig Rosetta Stoned live. I'd much rather hear Rosetta Stoned than Schism, Vicarious, or 46 & 2. It's just a really fun song live and a trippy song on the album.

Is there any youtube footage of this alternate version of Lost Keys?

And come on, you guys have to admit it was pretty damn awesome how the lasers kicked in during the rhythm section breakdown of Rosetta during that leg of the tour.
Dude, are you in AZ? I was totally at that show. It was awesome.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Yessir.

All this 2006 warm up tour talk has me thinking, can we have another one for the new album?

Seeing Tool in an intimate, seated venue is infinitely better than the larger GA venues. That warm gig had the most respectful, diehard crowd of any Tool show I've ever been to. Deafening roars after every song, yet quiet and peaceful while they were being performed. When they took their little intermission on stage it was a standing ovation the entire time, like, couldn't-hear-yourself-think-loud. Ahh, what a great experience.

I don't think so. There are some that catch bits of it, but none that capture in any way what it sounded like at my show (Duluth, GA) at least. A lot of it was like an intro to Lost Keys, which itself is kind of an intro. Weird/heavily effected vocal samples talking about acid or aliens (was very hard to tell) and Danny working that EMS Synthi AKS. Lots of insane bass that really floored everyone around me, myself included.

The few videos/audio I've seen or heard of it didn't get that part, only once Lost Keys itself had started and you are only hearing the remaining bits of the other thing they did.

And yeah, the laser effect in Rosetta Stoned on that tour was phenomenal. Being dead center in the first row of seats off the floor, it felt like that wall of light was going to slap us all on the head. Coupled with the amazing "lights out" cue, it was pretty breathtaking and one of the better laser/lighting moments they've had on all the 10,000 Days tours.

On another note, I dig Rosetta Stoned live. I'd much rather hear Rosetta Stoned than Schism, Vicarious, or 46 & 2. It's just a really fun song live and a trippy song on the album.
fanboi alert - we're allowed to say whatever we want without having to apologize for it. we certainly do not "love and appreciate everything Tool do," and we don't have to. don't worry, i'm sure their feelings won't be hurt.

Where did I apologize for anything? I'm not even talking to Tool, I'm talking to Junior.

The dude has been cool enough to post on these forums. It's fine to show appreciation every once in a while.

that's what I keep saying, the visuals really made Rosetta Stoned the live tour de force that it was. In 2006 it was good but in 2007 it was even better.

Rosetta Stoned is actually one of the songs I would most want to see them play again.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

I agree with the people above about Rosetta during the 2009 tour.

The first lasers of the concert kicked in right after the "god damn, shit the bed!" before the long instrumental in the middle of the song. That really surprised me at the first show in Denver... definitely didn't expect to see lasers in Rosetta.

Also, I'm pretty sure it was the Atlanta show where they started using the new Lost Keys version people are speaking of... with a weird voice-over intro as Justin fucks around with his sounds before actually starting lost keys. AND i think it was somewhere between the atlanta and toronto shows where they added the asteroids videogame from atari playing on the backdrop while the lasers were on during rosetta.

Summary: Rosetta fucking rocks live.

Yeah. Sounds very interesting too without the 2nd guitar. A slightly different twist on things all around. I like it. Cool new percussion.

Also interesting to see the visual elements crammed into that tiny Bowl stage. Actually looks kind of cool with the different screens/walls that close together. Almost like one gigantic screen (which is something I've always hoped they might do one day).
