in a certain way, it's a longer album than lateralus. More songs.

Parabol was of similar length, yet served as an intro and could hardly be called commercial. Perhaps we should reserve such judgements?

Hogwash, absolute hogwash. All the songs are under 4 minutes and contain Maynard rapping verses about Freud's anal stage, and other "Pyshcology"

that text:

"...they'll confront the listener with 20 minute conceptual pieces, countless technical gimmicks, terrific melodies and extreme heaviness..."
it's just a promo text, so they tend to exaggerate. No big deal.

The strangest thing in the tracklist, to me is the length of the Lost Keys. I have always thought LK would be a monstrous piece of music and one of the longest Tool has ever made (at least that's what Blair told us). And now it appears it is only 3:something. Unless Lost Keys goes together with Rosetta Stoned. This is the only possibility to me. Still I wish it was one track instead of two. The same I would prefer in case of !0,00 days and Wings for Marie. But we'll soon see everything.

dumb people might look at the tracklist and say 'there's only 4 songs i'm not buying this!' - so they divided it up a little more. also gives them option to play parts of the songs separately - like how they shortened or left out 'parabol' last tour.

Don't get me wrong, I can stand tracks like Message To Harry Manback or Mantra, but I'm just glad that the album won't be riddled with breaks. That was the only thing I didn't like about Ænima, 5 out of the 15 tracks weren't even songs.

I personally prefer the "fillers" they add to the experience of the record.

That website you linked has insanely small text. What the fuck is wrong with whoever designed that?
Also, fuck pretty much everybody who has posted before me in this thread.

Might be some sort of reason for the lenghts being the same on those 2. Also, there still may be some segues but just not split into actual separate track numbers. Or if that didn't make any sense, the first minute or so of some of those tracks will act as segues.

Lipan Conjuring might not be the only segue on the album. Eventhough the other tracks are 5 minute+, there's no telling that they can't be long ass segues either. I hope not though

Record companies will only pay you (the artist) for an EP if the cd has 5 or less tracks, no matter how long the tracks are. Its pretty lame. It happend to TMV when they put out Frances the Mute, thats why the last song which is all one song, is split up into 8 tracks.

That's what happens when you deal with the majors. Tool have it better than most when it comes to their new contract, but I still don't think they are a "5 song per album" type of band yet.

EP and LP are separated by total length not number of tracks

He's not certain. The Mars Volta's latest record "Frances the Mute" is only 5 songs and stretches to 77 minutes, yet was going to be categorized as an EP. Hence their reason for splitting the final track into eight parts; it gave the album more tracks, categorized it as an LP and was given wider distribution.
For another example, Linkin Park's albums are only 1/2 hour long and are counted as LPs, yet Alice In Chains' "Jar of Flies" is equally long is characterized as an EP due to less tracks.

World: God, that's just the most horrible list of songs, ever, guys.
Tool: Ok, here's the song lengths.
World: Good god, that's the worst song lengths possible.
Tool: Fuck you, then, we'll just keep it to ourselves.
