Has anybody noticed that right at the start of this song theres like some water noises and what sounds like a boat?? anybody got any ideas on what this might mean??
I always thought the OBVIOUS answer was that it was a huge bong hit, and that any discussion is what ELSE it could be. I've heard that it's Adam Jones' pigs underwater, but why would he try to kill his pigs. I've heard it's a vacuum cleaner underwater, but there'd be something like "Sorry we electricuted you, John" in the liner notes. So I gotta stick with a huge fucking bong hit (Maynard's got good lung control, not that I'm pointing to him or anything) and Danny doing some light cymbal rolls in the background.
It's definitely someone drowning or being submerged in water. Think of the overall theme of the album, beginning with its title. Think of the song titles - swamp song, undertow - think of some of the lyrics ... caught in the undertow ... knee deep ... this is not the rock I thought it to be ... there is a nautical theme here my friends.
there's just no way it could be a bong hit, i mean at first it definately sounds like that, but towards the end of the intro when it like starts to turn off and then on, if it is up loud enough and you listen closely, it sounds mechanical, like machinery trying to start back up. That is why i have always thought it was a motor boat
that's what i always pictured, it's like someone riding on a motorboat in the middle of some remote swamp with no other human contact for miles, then his engine just gives out and he is stuck there.
