so what are your thoughts on the theory that the Gov Ball Contract saying they need to be debuting new music? (which by the way i haven't bothered to try and research- can anyone verify that?)
When i read about the negotiations, I had the thought that they might drop on a streaming service for a period of time before they sell physical albums… which they could do through their online store and drive the price with some art/packaging goodies. I also was wondering if they would dabble in VR/360 video. The gorillaz have some shit like that coming soon and that would be some next level shit for the videos AJ & Grey put together.

I would say that all contracts are different and that anyone suggesting Tool must debut new music to headline a festival are drawing a long bow.

I dont think they would get involved in anything where they would be forced into anything of that nature, and i wouldnt be incredibly happy if they played the whole tour and then decide to drop the new album at the very last show. I do think that they could play new material starting with the first show of the tour but knowing that everybody is uploading the shows almost instantly they would most certainly like to have listeners hear new material on a proper setup and not recorded from an iphone. so in the end im conflicted about it all. i say one whole new song right from the start and the last show involving something very special involving that song as well as a big announcement or maybe a new video or something unexpected. i do believe in my curveball theory but not on what exactly this will turn out to be.

The idea of Tool debuting a new album at a show is complete fantasy.

^100%!! The only time I have been surprised by a Tool/Maynard show was his birthday at The Greek in LA was when Danny and Justin came out and played Sober. Also I have been surprised by certain songs but they would never play a new song live or wait till the last show of this mini tour to play a new song let alone a new album. Face it my Tool loving friends, we will know when an album has been recorded and unfortunately there is no evidence of that yet.

its not my fantasy as i am happy with the music they have produced, and in fact i am terrified of a new album and what it might sound like, a mixture of drunk wrestler intro songs and mystic occult lounge tunes is what the current influences are pointing towards. maybe it will kick ass but todays tool is not the same as the tool i knew and loved, im indifferent to it really, i want it mostly so i can stop my brain from making connections of blairs crap and what it smells of.

got to enjoy apc in Tulsa the other evening. Thats the first time Ive got to see them and it was a pretty good show. Maynard was very talkative throughout the show and even goofed off with a couple shake weights in the middle of a guitar solo. Said he got them as a birthday gift and was gonna try and get a quick workout in. One thing that I did notice with this show compared to all the tool shows I've seen are the vocals in the mix were great. Crystal clear up front and you could every word he was singing/saying. The lighting was bueno as well, dunno if thats juniors work or not but I appreciated it. Got lucky enough to snag a signed poster and would definitely go see them again.

Iv tried to find some actual proof about that governors ball rumors. Even compared past headlines with when their albums came out. While a lot of them have had albums come out around the timing of this festival it seems to just be a rumor to me. Iv only seen people post about it on reddit.

It will be kind of nice to be able to see the setlists before I buy my ticket for San Jose. If its the same setlist as the last tour, I'll probably pass.

Yeah i wish i could have know the setlist before decided to make the trek to St.paul from Chicago but iv always wanted to see them on back to back dates so i went with it.
I will say that the set from the last 2 tours is probably my favorite from the last 5+ years or so.

So wait. There is a rumor that a promoter put in the contract that Tool must perform new music?
That's rich.
And an awesome rumor to start if you want to drum up interest in a show you were promoting.
Not even Golden Voice has that power/balls.

I don't think that's anything more than a few eager Tool fans on reddit adding 2 and 2 and coming up with 5.
Tool are an established act, coming to a location they haven't played in some time. The promoter knows they will sell a decent number of tickets without a new album, and at the end of the day, the money is all they are interested in.

For those in NYC, that last tour actually followed a real album release. Must be nice to have too many tour dates in your region!

Pretty sure must of us have traveled a good amount of distance to see them. Unless you live in cali its pretty much required to see them more than once every 10 years lol. Especially if you life in the midwest/east coast.

TOOL TOUR SUPPORT ACTS
Tool is pleased to announce that prog rockers the "ONCE AND FUTURE BAND" will be the support act from Fairfax, Virginia through to St. Paul, Minnesota. TOOL is also excited to bring their good friends "THE CRYSTAL METHOD" as support for the rest of the shows - beginning in Calgary, Canada through to the San Bernardino, California show.

Looks like I am getting the "ONCE AND FUTURE BAND" in Hamilton. Anyone have any input on them?
I know who The Crystal Method is but I have no idea about the other one.

Here is an article on them: https://glidemagazine.com/179341/future-band/
Sounds interesting to me....
With Once & Future Band, they corral Pink Floyd-style psychedelia, virtuosic rock, and sparkling prog pop into dramatic fare that recalls certain icons of the eight-track-era -- and rarely just one of them at a time. Advanced study of Yes, Queen, the aforementioned Floyd, and later Beatles, just for starters, is revealed on "I'll Be Fine," with its mantra of "Love is in the air." Bold harmonies, trippy keyboards and vocal effects, drum and guitar solos, and melodic hooks mark the meandering six-and-a-half-minute master class. It pales in comparison, though -- by no fault or lack of its own -- to the lead track and single, "How Does It Make You Feel?" A surge of melody, color, rhythm, and flamboyance with no small debt to ELO, the song introduces Once & Future Band with enough fanfare to provoke the envy of many a peacock and statesman. Robinow's vocals move in and out of effects, vibrato, octaves, keys, and time signatures in the course of the song, yet are often overshadowed by elaborate drumming and downright rapturous keyboards and guitar. While remaining in a dynamic range, the album offers some variety, too. "Rolando," for instance, gets super jazz-funky with doses of brass and "wah-wah," to reference the George Harrison tune. There are only seven tracks on the album, but few listeners are likely to feel short-changed given 38 minutes of densely packed tunefulness, and the chops to pull it all off.

I can't imagine sitting through 3Teeth again. Don't know much about The Crystal Method but seems they are the better option this time around.
Wow, final APC show tonight. Got front row- can't wait! Then Tool fires it up in two and a half weeks. MJK is one busy dude.

The bands I've seen supporting Tool over the years (excluding festivals) are the Melvins, Jakob and Cosmic Psychos. Are are pretty good bands in their own right and I enjoyed them.
When I look at support bands in the US over the years, most of them (Tomahawk, Fantomas, Meshuggah, Isis) are bands I'd happily check out if they toured on their own.
The supports in the last few years, with the exception of the Primus tour haven't looked so great though
