The only crime 10k Days committed was that it wasn't as good as Aenima or Lateralus. Apart from that it's fine.

I agree Aenema was life changing. Especially after seeing them live for the first time in 1998. No matter how much I like each album since or before, Aenema will always be my favorite.

I agree...whatever album/song turned you on to TOOL is gonna stick with you. For me it was Prison Sex/Undertow. When that album came out music in general was in a lull. Blew my mind. Then I went and seen them live. And that was life-changing for me. Haven't missed a tour yet. (Except for King Crimson tour. I had tix but went to jail and missed the show .lol)

A truer statement has never been made about 10k Days. It's good, but it's fighting for third place in the TOOL catalog.
On a funny note, thanks to Kanaduh committing "The crime of the century" by taping the VIP experience, I got his ticket for the following night, thus getting to have my pic with Adam.
Then the other day I was showing my Pops some phone pics I had taken along the way and the adam pic popped up.
"Who's that?"
Me "adam from Tool"
"He looks like a ghost."

I believe Undertow is a solid third place.
1. Aenima
2. Lateralus
3. Undertow
4. 10,000 Days
5. Salival
5. Opiate
I am not bashing 10,000 Days, I really like that album but it just doesn't have what the other three have.
Salival has some filler on it but You Lied and the live version of Pushit almost put it in fourth place by themselves. Not to mention No Quarter and Third Eye (live).
It is sad for me to put Opiate at the bottom because I love it and it is a classic. But the length of the EP just doesn't allow it to go anywhere but the bottom.

one thing I find interesting is that although I agree that (very clearly) Lateralus and Aenima are superior albums - I listen to songs from 10,000 days far and away more than any other song/album for many years now.

10,000 Days is the last album I really started learning things from, and so I listen to it most frequently now. It's a solid album and has some stunning moments on it, though I do agree Lateralus and AEnima are stronger. I want to say the interest in it comes from having the albums for less time, but in my case I bought all their music at once, so it isn't really a factor--I think perhaps 10,000 Days is an album that takes a longer time to really appreciate on the same level as the others.

for those of you that can make it, definitely check out the Primus shows with Danny Carey. Unfortunately the closest show to me is Detroit - which I was going to drive to but by then the regular drummer will be back. oh well

I would absolutely love to. I know Larry La londe personally. Although its been MANY years since weve spoke. We grew up in same area (el Sobrante) and have watched him since he was in Possessed and Blind Illusion. Ive seen more Primus shows than any other group. We would go every weekend to watch them at Omni . So yeah...would be awesome to see that show.

Yes...it comes out tonight at a midnight release. The 10k days puzzle gives you GPS locations of places you can get a copy. Rumoured to be a concept type album where Adam and Justin switch places and MJK on drums and Danny on vocals. Also when you combine this new album with Opiate , Undertow, Aenima, Salival , Lateralus and 10k days, you get a 24 hour long super TOOL track that also syncs to every Brady Bunch episode when played. Also during the tour for this new album, junior is going to drop the big light show and do something a little more personal by runningaround the venues with 2 flashlights. Genius!

yeah, midnight ...TONIGHT - guess i found that out the hard way, huh? should've known better, albums usually drop on tuesdays. (STUPID!!! IDIOT!!!) guess that's just how excited i am. heheh ...heh. but anyways ... i'll be even more ready this time. :grabs gps and brady bunch boxset: haha, and i had a feeling something like this would happen. there were even some leaked images of chet zar painting some crazy shit while binge-watching the series earlier in the year. and given how formulaic those episodes were (even for a sit-com), it was only a matter of time before tool worked in some sort of artistic overlay. this whole 'freaky-friday' instrumental thing, though, is catching me a little off guard. but, i don't know, i figure if any band could pull it off it'd be tool. afterall, adam and justin use the same bass-ic amplification (see what i did there?). danny sang on lipan, i believe ...and maynard ...well. .. . ummmmm .. .. hm. ...shit! HE'S TOO GODDAMNED ONE-DIMENSIONAL!!! uhm ... uhm. ... megaphone beat box?!

Also when you combine this new album with Opiate , Undertow, Aenima, Salival , Lateralus and 10k days, you get a 24 hour long super TOOL track that also syncs to every Brady Bunch episode when played.

yeah, midnight ...TONIGHT - guess i found that out the hard way, huh? should've known better, albums usually drop on tuesdays.

This wouldn't happen to be ToolArchive, would it? He does some great stuff.
I covered one of the pieces they've been playing this past tour.

yeah, him.
that was fantastic! this is from the extended Opiate middle section. All I picture when I listened to this was drunk-Justin dancing and waving around on stage in a 2001-maynard-esche movement. it was so refreshing to watch. this riff WILL be on the new album. guaranteed.

Hey, thanks very much! I love this one but seriously want to put the other one together, it is my favorite of the two riffs they shared this past tour. I sincerely hope they both end up on the new album, I love reading people's stories about hearing the riff for Wings years ago, for example. I felt disappointed for my friend that went to this past concert with me, he left to get beer during this segment. I had told him specifically before the show, stick around for the segues and Opiate if they play it, there's something special coming! And he missed it. But it was a joy being there, I was third row and was absolutely ecstatic. I would do definitely do the VIP experience again, though I'd prefer to do it when my income is such that it doesn't cost half my year's salary!

That shit is cool. I watched opiateofthemasses (another Tool Youtuber, he does quality covers, but the coolest thing is that he has a set up really close to Adam's live stage set-up) do a lesson on the live version of Stinkfist. I'd like to go back and see if I can cover it :) I like the harmonics he uses there.

Agreed! It's such a small and subtle change but I really think it's pretty fucking badass.
I love how over 15 years Stinkfist as a live staple keeps evolving and becoming better and better.

Also interesting how they are using it to close the show instead of start it. Leaves you wanting more.

last night i went to the Russian Circles show in toronto and after the show i ran into the band at a pizza place down the street from the venue. spent 10 minutes talking to the drummer and bought them food. asked a lot of questions specifically about their experience opening for tool in Europe a few years ago.
he said that Adam was one of the nicest people he has met - very genuinely awesome person and very friendly/down to earth. Danny was also a really cool guy.
what I found particularly interesting is that he mentioned nobody from russian circles was able to meet Maynard over the entire duration they opened for tool. that's pretty funny.
