Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

Just walked in the door from the show and it rocked. Marysville is in BFE but Maynard and crew put on a damn good show. Sober, Lateralus, and a unique version of Opiate were just a few of the none 10,000 days songs played, and every song performed from the new album kicked serious ass. Will be seeing them again in Oakland in 18 hours.

WORTH EVERY PENNY

The show was great! No probs with the crowd; everyone seemed to just enjoy themselves. Didn't get caught smoking bud(BONUS). The Maynardisms were great. The sound was perfect, and I liked the exteded variations on some of the songs.

I liked the show so much that i bought two overpriced $40 t-shirts, and a $25 poster.

Thanks Tool for one of the most entertaining nights of my life.

Schism
Rosetta Stoned

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

Great show, nothing new though, except we didn't get to hear lost keys. Schism was sped up a bit in the middle, and Stinkfist led directly into The Pot. A couple of cool jam times, but pretty much the same thing people have reported from previous shows. Cool visuals including an all-white stage floor where images were projected (would have missed it if you were on the floor).

There were quite a few Maynardisms, some of which I could not make out:
Something about "... thats the alcohol ...", "Thanks for comming tonight ... there's a lot of hotel porn out there you could be jacking off to instead ...", the crack pipe reference that is reported above, and something else that I am missing.

I re-read my post (above) after I posted it and realized that I made the show sound mundane. It was far from that, so to clarify: Danny's drums were nothing short of amazing. Adam and Justin both rocked throughout the night, including through some very cool jam sessions. I loved Adam's voicebox solo in Jambi, that sounds very cool live. And the sound was some of the best I have heard at a concert (at least from where I was in section 105). The base drum was intense! Thanks TOOL for another incredible experience!!!

BTW, Isis was extremely cool, check them out if you havn't already.

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

As the above posters have mentioned, the show was incredible. Danny was amazing - I never realized he used two basses. Adam and Justin were even better live than they are in recordings. Tool totally proved why they are one of the best rock bands ever last night. I was sitting close enough and right in the middle of the amphitheatre that my girlfriend and I had a near perfect view (aside from people in front of us standing on their seats some of the time) and were in a position to hear almost everything, we were able to understand everything he said. The comments were as follows:

After Stinkfist: "Just a reminder of who's in charge. That would be the alcohol."

After Opiate: "Thanks for coming out tonight, we'd love to stay, but there's lots of hotel porn to jack-off to."

After Sober there was a huge pause and it seemed as though the show was over. The band got together in the middle of the stage and sat down. Everyone in the amphitheatre held up their lighters and lit them. It was very cool. They then broke into their last three songs, which were so awesome I couldn't remember what songs they had played before those. Anyhow, if you haven't seen them, GET TICKETS AND SEE THEM!! Worth every penny!

Edit: oh yeah, and ISIS was pretty cool too. Vocals were a not so good, but sonically they were really cool. Kind of a mix between Tool, a sound like mushroom head, and Pinback. The drummer is real good too.

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

They sounded great as usual, but how could they not playing the exact same shit every night. Sorry but my attitude is a little bad what with the same setlist, and I actually thought MJK was being lame. During the band sit down he was laying down on his face. The crack pipe comment was a little out of place as well, considering the whole arena had lighters up. Adam & Justin actually ran offstage to get their own lighters to join in. Maybe Maynard was grumpy after a bender in Vegas on Friday, who knows? Justin was the highlight of the show, interacting with the crowd and jamming his ass off.

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

i was just telling my wife that i thought the berkley show with king crimson was the best sounding one i had seen...until last night. as far as a live show at an outdoor venue it was clean. the bass was awesome, justin was very animated, danny was bad ass as usual, maynard's voice was very audible and he seemed to be into it. hopefully we'll get to hear something new tonight or tuesday.

HOLY SHIT!!! THE FUCKING GONG!!! I'M STILL VIBRATING!!

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

Awesome show. My first live TOOL show, and one of the best shows I've been to. Sometimes I didn't want to look away from the screens, the artwork was so trippy and cool! I loved the reflective floor and all the colors too. Overall, awesome show. They could have played longer though! There was like an hour between them and Isis; they only ended up playing for like an hour and a half.

"Do you believe in time travel?"
-Maynard, right before Opiate

"As much as we'd love to stay, we have to get going. There's a lot of hotel porn to jack off to."
-Maynard. They played like four songs after that.

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

Awesome Show! My bf keeps saying "great Tool." It was a beautiful night with great people and great music. We're heading out right now for the Oakland show...

After the interview I heard with Justin and Joe Maumi (I think that's how it's spelled - Sorry, Joe, if I got it wrong) on 98 Rock on Friday night I was REALLY hoping they would play Wings/10,000 days last night - I even wore wings to the show! Oh well, maybe tonight. It certainly doesn't take away from the awesomeness of the show last night and I can't figure out what they would drop from the current show to fit those songs in.

Okay. Gotta hit the road for Oakland.

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

that version of opiate, the sound, the weather and being right under the moon, danny's drums, projecting onto the stage... all very very good shit. I feel much relief after all my griping about the setlist. this was the 3rd time i heard that set, but it has come a long way since the paramount in oakland. the visuals were almost cheesy at times, but overall they workd very well. the sound was not only loud and thundering at times, but the actual mix was itself was excellent. i give it an 8/10 up against touring this side of 2002. (gotta leave room for 10k days live debut tonight!)

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

This was my third show this summer, and by far the best. I was only about fifteen feet away from Justin, and holy shit did he kick ass the entire show. The sound was nothing short of amazing. Highlights for me were opiate and the massive gong hit at the end of lateralus. The crowd seemed to be in good spirits, no meatheads smashing into you, and the band looked to be into it as well. Thanks tool for an awesome show and see you all again tonight.

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

My second Tool experience. Amazing as usual. Way better than my first. No dumb people throwing shoes at maynard this time. Same setlist as the previous night. Saw an albino walking a 3 legged dog. I swear.

STINKFIST - Maynards intro was funny. "Blah blah blah.....*mumbles incoherently*" and then stinkfist starts. Had a perfect view of the stage for this one, with noone sitting in front of me. I wasn't expecting maynards HUGE SCREAM, it gave me the shivers. Maynard seemed to be really into it tonight.

THE POT - Bass sounded unbelievable tonight. Was a little distracted when this dumb girl and her boyfriend show up and stand right in front of me, even though everyone else around us is sitting down. so we had to stand for most of the rest.

46 & 2 - Cool intro....huge bass...so freaking loud and clear. the "I choose to live...." section was perfect. Maynard was really belting those parts out.

JAMBI- Definitely one of the highlights....this song is so perfectly structured. I'm not one to head bang but during the "If I leave than I might. as. well. be. gone!!!" part i almost snapped my neck. and the talkbox solo was perfect.

SCHISM - this one surprised me....I knew they would play it and knew it would be good. But it really blew my mind. The double time section was awesome....and the end just shook the whole place...almost like I was hearing it for the first time, rather than the millionth.

ROSETTA STONED - killer, i don't know how they pull this song off live but they do. During the first "Strapped down, my bed...." part Maynard was walking in circles sort of hunched over and stomping in rythym to the vocals. Adam missed a big change during the build up section but they adjusted beautifully....and maynards bull horn or whatever is went out at the end, but he noticed pretty quickly and ran over the microphone.

OPIATE - "do you believe in time travel?" "are you sure?" I remember thinking Opiate already...crap this shows almost over. The guy behind us thought he knew the words and had to sing louder than maynard. the slowed down middle section of the song was great.

SOBER - Again, the "Hits" so to speak, surprised me tonight. I wasn't expecting them to be as engaging as they were. I guess just having heard them so much...but Sober, Schism, and 46&2 were probably the best tonight.

the band took a little mini break. I think Danny lost a stick right around here, on one of his little mini drum solos, one went flying off to the left.

LATERALUS - Huge, epic. the weird lasers came out. Maynard sang with his back to the crowd the whole time. awesome...and that fucking GONG!!!!!!!

the band took a real break, sat on the drum riser, maynard layed down. The crowd busted out tons of lighters. Justin and Adam went and got 2 of their own and joined in. Maynard said "I'm confused, I thought they confiscated all your crack pipes at the door? why do you need the lighters?"

VICARIOUS - Maynard with all he had singing "Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies, Much better you than I" yeah.....out of this world.

AENEMA - Maynard summed this one up pretty well: "ahh yeah".

the lights came on the band applauds the crowd...throws them sticks, drumheads, water bottles. they bow and clap for us some more. Maynard points to his watch like it's time for bed...and the best live band walks off the stage.

on the way out....floating strangely and gracefully the complete opposite way of the huge crowd is this wide eyed albino guy walking a three legged dog. what a night capper.

I laughed, I cried, I was amazed!! TOOL is the greatest band i have ever heard. I first heard TOOL my freshman year of high school. Now I am pushing pushing 30, married to my lovely wife and i have a unbelivable daughter. The greatest thing in the world is to lay back with your baby and listen to some TOOL queitly in the background to put her to sleep. Thank you Maynard, Adam, Justin and Danny!

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

Amazing show.

Opiate is such an intense song live, it blew me away! Stinkfist was perfect for opening the show mixed with an elaborate array of lighting effects made for one spectacular performance. Tool definitely knows how to put on a concert.

It was Lateralus that topped it off for me, I will remember that performance forever. Such a powerful song...I'm really at a loss for words. Everyone in attendance that I encountered was very mellow and pleasant (though that may have been due to the dense haze of herb smoke lingering throughout the entire amphitheater - I even saw a woman working concessions take a rip off a pipe), excellent crowd for a Tool show.

ISIS put up quite a performance as well, vaguely reminded me of Opeth live.

Tool, thank you.

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

This was my 8th time seeing Tool, and I can't believe how great they are every time. I really liked how they did the fake "encore" thing again. I remember seeing them at Lollapalooza in '97 and right toward the end of the show Maynard made a crack about how they had won a grammy so they needed to do encores now. Something about how they should just play their set and call it good, but they'd go ahead and "do an encore." So I found it funny when tonight they totally do the "okay, we're not really done, but we're gonna disappear for a second and then come back out and finish." It's the same thing every band does and takes seriously, but Tool finds humor in it and so rather than take off to the edge of the stage and pretend to disappear for a bit, they just plop down in the stage and wave at the crowd, bullshit with each other...I mean Maynard was laying on his stomach swaying his legs back and forth like some schoolgirl on a picnic! Totally awesome! I guess I just love their dry sense of humor and wit.

The acoustics were awesome and everyone sounded great. I noticed they pretty much stuck to the "singles" and I would have loved to have seen some of the odd tracks thrown in here and there. I miss the dreamy version of pushit they used to do, and I was desperately hoping to hear "right in two" but all the new songs were so amazing I was very happy! I would actually say I think the songs off the new album sounded the best of the set. Everyone was spot on, Maynard's voice was perfect as always, and Danny is always super fun to watch.

I also really liked the white stage set-up. Since it was white, it took on the colors and images projected quite well, and so the stage was always a continual piece of eye candy, much cooler than a boring black stage.

the last thing I have to say is that I am very excited Isis is playing with Tool, I've been listening to them for years and I was a little worried the fans might not give them a chance, I was pleasantly surprised that, at least everyone I was sitting near was really into them, which is awesome. They know how to layer sounds on top of each other and create some of the most amazing landscape effects with their instruments. If you missed them then please check them out on myspace or somethng...just google "isis" and you'll find them!

Thanks Tool! Looking forward to seeing you again some time (after Maynard gets those grapes harvested!).

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

Totally stunning as I expected. I read someone else say that you forget how unbelievable the live show is when you haven't seen them for a while, I wasn't able to snag tickets for the Paramount show in Oakland and so I had been building up to this show for a LONG time and had a ton of anticipation and of course left completely satisfied.
I know other people had been complaining about the setlist and the length of the show, but because they perform at such a high level they have to be organized. The show seemed to be a good length to me. The visuals they have are all timed and coordinated with the songs, so they would have to create all of the visual programing that accompanies the songs they want to play before being able to change up the setlist to much. They just don't go out there and bang a set out, they have a predetermined idea of what kind of vibe they want to project the whole time, so it's almost forced to be specific. They certaily can't just run up there and take requests or anything and still have the same impact visually as they do with the show they play now. I played in a band for 5 years and we did lots of shows.. to put on a show like that is not easy. They are beyond just about anyone else out there right now with their live show. Actually, I really can't think of anyone who even gets close. Right down to the genuine huddle/man-hug thing at the end. They respect each other and that is obvious. Stuff like that puts the icing on the cake I think.
Hightlight for me was definitely Lateralus, so powerful and they played it perfect. Rosetta was good to see live too but the way MJK sang the beginning kind of changed the feel of the song, but it was a nice live touch, he was being comical almost and I dig on some improvisation at live shows cuz you can hear the album versions anytime... I was really hoping to hear Right in Two but after they played Opiate I was happy to get that one because they nailed it.
Just hope they come back soon, hope that the rumors of a late Winter/Spring tour in the US are true. The amphitheater is out in the middle of nowhere, but it's a very cool venue to see shows at, MUCH better than the antiquated Arco Arena.
Best live band ever, so lets just hope we get to see it a few more times. If they do come back next year maybe that is when we'll get a new setlist and more songs... I think Intension would make a great live song, and it'd certainly be cool to see songs like Third Eye or Wings/10,000days...

Re: 2006/09/02 - Marysville, CA - Sleep Train Amphitheater

Yeah, this was my 8th Tool show as well, and again, they outdid themselves. Had a healthy dose of psilocybin to shake off the outside world, and my first hit of weed in a long time. They put out an INCREDIBLE amount of energy. A lot of bands have energy, but very very very few are fully aware of what it is that they are doing. A Tool concert is a ritual, make no mistake, but it is also four weird ass motherfuckers having a shitload of fun. I saw them in Oakland last May, but this one was the one they were "warming up" for! Maynard was really into it, each word carrying a massive amount of weight & sincerity behind it. They all rocked hard, the heaviest Tool show I've seen (first was in 8/2001 w/ King Crimson)

I rocked out so hard I was sore the next day, but I didn't care. I was moved, as always, more than ever before. Made me want to go out there and put that energy to use! FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!

opiate was sweet.. but i think for me stinkfist was the most euphoric part of it all.. especially that extended scream. god. great show, although all i wanted to do was run around and dance, but i couldn't of course and i'm not much of a mosher, so i had no energy release. i should pay tool to play at my house sometime.

i was the kid in the ace hardware shirt, if anyone saw me.
