Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Junior made it sound like they were offered some festival shows so they're filling in the empty space between those festivals. Beyond that, I'm not really sure. Some people have suggested that they're using the tour as a way of getting back into the groove of writing and being together so they can start work on the next album.

Tool committed to doing three large Summer festivals, and planned the other non-festival dates to fill in the gaps.

Some bands also do mini tours to use the money to pay for production expenses on an upcoming album/project.

The stage volume from the guitar and bass rigs was louder than the limit on their own without the PA being on (Adam and Justin are quite loud onstage). The decision was made to pay the fine upfront so the sound engineer wouldn't be hassled by the sound police during the show to turn it down and could just do his job as normal. The down side to it was the lifetime ban was mentioned after the fact.
Brilliant ;-)
Wouldn't it be production manager's job to find out the decibel limitations of the venue in advance?

Or release albums 5 years apart... or have the music video released a year after the album... and the second video released 3 or 4 years afterwards.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't San Antonio screwed a couple of times during Tool's last tour? It seems like I remember complications on two different occasions prevented them from getting their show. I'll be purchasing tickets for the San Antonio show this time around, and I'm curious if anybody knows what the venue is like. How's the sound? And about how big is it?

Yes we were screwed a couple times, but they eventually made it up. Venue is where the Spurz play, large arena. Sound is not 1/4 as good as the Dallas show is gonna be!!!

Dammit... Why'd you have to go and say that?! lol I tried LIKE HELL to get tickets to the dallas show which would be much closer for me, but to no avail. I feared San An's venue would be a sucky. Now I'm questioning whether or not it's even worth going.

After only getting a single ticket through ticketmaster, i paid $400 for a second ticket to the 2006 McFarlin show in Dallas...questioned the decision every second...until they came out on stage!

you only get this opportunity once, so suck on it while you can. i'm through with arena rock shows...the sound always seems to suck compared to amphitheaters and the like.

Nokia is a great venue, and i'd reccomend it over Houston and San Antonio any day...the sound at Toyota Center was terrible in 2007!

You should definitely go. The venue that they're playing at in San Antonio is big, but that's been the case for a majority of their shows for the last ten years, except things like the 2006 mini tour and other off-hand shows. I think that a lot of the shows they did in Europe during 2006 - 2007 were at huge music festivals. It will be a special experience at the AT&T center in SA.

Just a question I had been meaning to ask Junior sometime; do you happen to remember the show in Tulsa, OK during the 2002 summer tour? It was at the Pavilion building behind the Expo Square Center. I was really surprised that Tool played there, considering that there was no balcony and the entire show, floor and seating was general admission. Do you remember anything special about it? it's always stuck out in my mind as a very weird yet mind blowing show. It felt more intimate than some of the larger arena shows.

Shit dude... I've seen the bootleg videos of this show, and I've seen a lot of bootleg Tool shows in my day. Rest assured, it was special. I wouldn't normally say that, but if anybody can get some audio/video from that show, they would be very pleasantly surprised. It's odd you even mention it. Honestly, it was the first bootleg I saw that I thought really did their original studio recordings justice... so clean and flawless.

I hope San Antonio turns out to be a good show. I really do.

If I remember correctly, the most memorable thing (to me) about that show is that there was an Alpaca convention in the expo center and they were out walking around by the buses. First time I'd ever seen an Alpaca.

If you can point me in the direction of some bootlegs for the 7/25/02 Tulsa show it would be greatly appreciated. I've looked for any kind of audio and video since the show, and I do remember seeing (maybe on distortiononline) that there are recordings of it but I've never been able to find them. I would love to relive that show.

And Junior, I also remember the Alpacas. That was pretty funny, I forgot all about that until I read that. I've been to many Pow-Wows at the Expo Square while I was growing up, it would have been great if there was one the same day as the Tool show. Two highly spiritual events in one day.

I've done sound for Pow-Wows when I was living in Minnesota, back in the early '90s.

That's very awesome. I've been meaning to catch one sometime soon. Well, to get back on topic, how likely do you think it is that if the ATL show ends up being on the 28th that a show somewhere like in Little Rock or New Orleans pops up?

There's still a pretty good chance you'll be able to get tickets to the Dallas show. They almost always release a bunch of good seats about 72-48 hours before the show. Just keep checking ticketmaster in the days leading up...

I dunno. My experience with the smaller venues is they typically don't release tickets like that just before a show, especially if the show is a "hard" sell out. But I guess it varies from location to location.

I can definitely confirm that for some of the larger venues patience is a virtue. At the start of the second leg of 10k Days in SD I could not bring up good tickets for the first show, even though I was searching furiously the moment tickets went on sale. So I passed on getting anything and instead just checked TM every day. About 2-3 weeks before the show I suddenly brought up 4th row tickets on the floor. It was damn surreal and I still remember clicking that "Purchase" button for them in disbelief. Great seats!

Same thing happened at Staple's Center for the Van Halen reunion show. The stage for that show was completely open and the venue figured out it could open up the side sections to the immediate left and right of the stage. I got tickets literally two rows off the floor and right next to the stage. Again, great seats! And that was about 2 weeks before the show just checking TM periodically.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

Saw the NINJA show last night at Shoreline. And lemme tell ya, while the sound in the lower bowl is phenomenal and the bass response kind of bordering on ridiculous, that place is corporate HELL. I dunno if I'd want to see Tool there. Felt like Disneyland was surrounding you along with season ticket holders from all the biggest silicone valley company's (Google's complex is next door)...then again, the lawn will never sell out...NIN raped. I don't get why people were saying they were lacking something. Trent was on and the strobes were rad (although, probably not as cool as the lights in the sky tour). Really wish I coulda seen them on that leg! JA on the other hand...who let Perry Ferrell next to a mic in the first place? God damn that guy sucks. I mean, he can sing, but what a doucheeeeee.

Junior, do you know if NIN' lights are triggered or timed, or do they go with the flow like what you and Tool do?

Felt like Disneyland was surrounding you along with season ticket holders from all the biggest silicone valley company's (Google's complex is next door)...then again, the lawn will never sell out...NIN raped. I don't get why people were saying they were lacking something. Trent was on and the strobes were rad (although, probably not as cool as the lights in the sky tour). Really wish I coulda seen them on that leg! JA on the other hand...who let Perry Ferrell next to a mic in the first place? God damn that guy sucks. I mean, he can sing, but what a doucheeeeee.

PF's voice was paper thin but musicaly speaking, Janes did blow Trent and the boys off stage. Navarro, Avery and Perkins KILLED it.

Both bands were awesome. Much better than expected and the NIN set lis was perfect!

My first time a Shoreline and thank goodness I had 4th row, cause the lawn sucks! Worst site lines of any ampitheater I have been to. Makes Irvine look perfect.

I'm not sure about the current tour, but NIN has done it differently for a number of recent tours.
As far as I know, there is typically very little room for improv and even when a human is running it they are essentially just pressing the "next" button every time there is a change. This current tour could be different, since it appears to be a bit more stripped down.
In the past they have had tours where the entire show was triggered by the same time code that was playing some of the music and all the lighting director had to do was sit there and watch the console to make sure the time code was working.

If the show is really on the 28th I'd be surprised to see the 26th and 27th both be off days.
In that case I'd look to the 26th being filled and the 27th being off. That would make a 3-in-a-row of 24, 25, 26 and a 3-in-a-row of 28, 29, 30. That would be far more likely than making a 4-in-a-row of 27, 28, 29, 30.
It's anybody's guess, though, and the ATL show could still be on the 27th, which leaves it all the same.

I guess playing the same songs for 20 years gives you the ability to be, how do you say, DEAD ON.

I thought they were fat as fuck, but I can't take the all for show Hollywood cock-rock. It's like you could almost feel their ego's waving out into the audience, taking out 50 year old CEO after 50 year old CEO. I just can't relate to their music on a personal, emotional level like with Tool or NIN or Bad Religion. There's just nothing there on that front.

I get ya. I feel the same way about NIN and Trent's faux angst. I will say that I have met both Trent and Perry and Perry was by far the cooler dude (although I spent a lot more time with PF so it's not quite a scientific comparison.)

There is no doubt that Dave is a star fucker but the man does shred and is playing better than ever.

So are we going to get a Tool date up here or what?

or at least a New Orleans one?? (my second home)

just an utter guess, but i think the dallas show is going to be recorded for an upcoming dvd box set. like the salival deal. with the pot video on it and such. just a thought, but to me that is the reason for the asterisk on the tool newsletter page. the sound of the nokia is certainly good enough for it

Really? I don't know shit about JA for the most part, but is his, for lack of better terms, stupidity, just an act on stage? From what I saw the other night I can't imagine that guy has been in charge of Lolla all these years haha, I could def see Reznor being hard to talk to though.

Not sure how you define stupid, but he was probably (almost certainly) heavily medicated on more than one level. He ripped a calf muscle a few days ago and has been hobbled by it ever since.
