I just started listening to Porcupine Tree. After TOOL holding this place for about 3 years, I think I'm about ready to hand it over to them. I've heard their albums "In Absentia" and "Stupid Dream".

1. Tool (will probably be my fav. band till the day I die)
2. Meshuggah
3. Rush
4. Killswitch Engage
5. Dream Theater
Kind of a weird mix of music but owell...
Other bands I'm getting into but don't have any CDs yet are: Chevelle, Opeth, Porcupine Tree. I've ordered Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" and it's on the way. I can't wait!
EDIT:
Oops, didn't see that part about no Tool. Owell I'll leave it anyways.
Sigur Ros
The Velvet Underground
Dntel
The Microphones
Radiohead
Neutral Milk Hotel
Dr. Octagon

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (no explanation needed. They just rock)
Radiohead (the band that no cynical intellectual should leave home without)
Deftones (only their newer stuff)
Eels (old school blues rock at its best)
The Flaming Lips (again, just their new stuff)
Zwan (mostly corny pop, but GOOD corny pop. Plus, I like the fact that their songs seem to have an "I saw Jesus flying around spreading pixie dust while I was tripping" sort of overtone to them)
The Juliana Theory (they totally sold out with their new album, their first album wasn't that great, "Emotion is Dead" is decent, but the "Music from Another Room" EP is brilliant.)
Stavesacre (yep, I know they're a Chrisitan band, but like a guy who is so confident in his masculinity that it doesn't bother him to wear pink, I'm so confident in my agnosticism that it doesn't bother me to listen to a band with spiritual overtones to their music as long as they aren't obnoxious. Wait a minute. Isn't "confident in my agnosticism" an oxymoron? Oh well.)
Also, I'm starting to get into The Books. And of course, I like Tool and A Perfect Circle. I actually think that A Perfect Circle could turn out to be a better band than Tool in the long run, if they actually get around to releasing a second album in the next decade. Then again, they lost Paz to Zwan, and they lost Josh to Abandoned Pools, and they're getting some guy from Marilyn Manson, one of the corniest bands/artists in the history of fake Satanists, so they might not be as good as they were on Mer de Noms. I know exactly what you're thinking as you're reading this, so I'll make everyone happy and shut up now.

YOU ARE AWESOME. By the way, The Flaming Lips' older stuff might grow on you later. I have taken quite a liking to Transmissions, Clouds, and (whenever I get the chance) Zaireeka, but they're really older stuff from the 80s is still pretty bad. Nothing on Transmissions or Clouds is as good as anything on Yoshimi, but some have argued that Transmissions is better than The Soft Bulliten (I'm not one of them, you see the problem is Transmissions doesn't have songs by the names of What Is The Light, or The Gash)
And it's real awesome that there is one other person here who likes The Books.
I think you might be right about A Perfect Circle. I personally didn't like most of Mer De Noms, but I think it showed incredible emotional potential for future releases (kinda like how I feel about Dredg, though i'm not sure if dredg will get their shit together enough, but for good bands, third times a charm). But then again, losing paz and josh and gaining someone from MM is not a good sign. I don't think APC will ever be as broad or epic as tool, but that's the idea really.
Anyways, some others:
Kraftwerk
Autechre (older stuff, before they made noise crap)
Stereolab
Manitoba
The Dismemberment Plan
The Pixies
Sonic Youth
Circulatory System
Yo La Tengo
The White Stripes
Anathema (strongly recommended for any Tool fan)
Dillinger Escape Plan
Elliott Smith
Kyuss
Opeth
Strapping Young Lad
Pig Destroyer
Screaming Trees
Vintersorg
Anywho, I've heard a couple songs from The Soft Bulletin, and I think they're better than a lot of the stuff on Yoshimi, so I'm definitely picking it up. I like Wayne Coyne's voice when he's singing "dream pop" or whatever the hell you would call the last few Flaming Lips releases, but it kind of grates on me when he's singing rock, even though some of their early nineties stuff is good. I haven't had a chance to listen to Zaireeka; I don't think I have four CD players lying around my house. Oh well. I'm going to college in a couple of months, so I'll buy Zaireeka before then. Also, I'm not the only person who likes/has heard The Books. There are definitely some other people floating around this forum that are fans. I've only heard a couple of their songs, and I'm too lazy to special-order the album from the Gallery of Sound; then again, I went to the trouble of special-ordering Madonna by The Trail of Dead and it rocks, so I'll have to think about it...
