Yeah, I actually have a friend who's into it and he just met Matt Hughes this past weekend to train with him down in southern Illinois. Most of those guys train on a daily basis for hours, I'm sure most of them could kick my ass.

Sure, we've all compared 10K to their previous works, but our expectations were probably too high (just maybe). They laid down what they wanted to and we either got something out of it or not. The songs didn't flow very well at times if you ask me, but whatever. Were justin and danny phenomenal? I think so, in fact, I think justin brought it and then some. Were adam and maynard at their best? Probly not, but who the hell am I to say because they did what they felt and that's more important than what we think when it all comes down to it.

If anything, Danny and Justins efforts where phenominal (sp?) And Maynard put another bunch of good hits like Vicarious and Wings 1n2. Adam just hasn't improved much, but he's still shredding. Who are we to complain?

I've heard people (e.g. the cockface who wrote the review on Pitchfork) state that Danny's drumming is of a lower quality on 10KD; I'd like to contest this. Sure, it has less... brutality to it, but it's far more creative. And Justin has proved he is fucking GREAT with bass. Maynard's lyrics are good, but don't like ip to AEnima. Adam's guitar isn't truly special, though... rather a shame because, obviously, it populates the whole album well.

You might play the guitar, but you're far from a musician. (If you think that's aimed at you, you're probably right)
There are 12 notes. No more, no less. Everything is recycled.
Likes to play between the 5th and 8th fret? Who doesn't?
I love to hear people say playing in drop D is lazy mans guitar, cheating, easy way out, bullshit. Drop D opens the door to creativity and allows you to play things you just can't in standard tuning.
Since when is great talent and artistic vision on a guitar defined by technical speed and agility? When has abstract painting become shit and blown out of the art gallery because it doesn't have enough detail?
Adam Jones is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Not because he can run a blues scale in under 3/10 of a second (and he can), but because he writes great riffs.

I guess you thought that was aimed at you.
I did not read all the posts. I did make the mistake of borrowing a single statement from you in stating my opinion, I apologize.
This was simply my opinion on the critique (not necessarily those in this thread) of Adam Jones and his guitar playing.
No need to make it personal (which is just silly in itself), as I surely did not intend for it to be. I'm sorry it hit so close to home with you.
I never questioned anyone's playing ability or their musicianship. It is a generalized statement and the (if you think...then it probably is) means take this statement how you want to. You obviously took it very personally.
I agree with your statement on Drop D tuning 100%. Further showing that my post wasn't aimed at you personally, or my buddy Rivek.
I agree with your 5th and 8th fret statement. See above...
I also agree with your "context of Tool" statement. You obviously understand music you musician you.
So again, I apologize that you somehow thought I was bashing you and Rivek, although I can't really see how you took it that way, aside from my borrowing the fret argument (which is a common bashing of Adam that I hear and read although your statement was not in this category).
Being that I am a music professor, I would encourage you to read back over my post in a more subjective frame of mind. And remember, it's just an opinion.
P.S. Am I really the 1st person to piss you off here? I'm honored!

Nah, it would've been much higher after Lateralus and higher still after Aenima. But, after 10K Days, there are now much fewer fans for The Reaper to tap.

Adam Jones is a great guitar player - but only when playing with Tool. Working alone, he's mediocre at best. The fact that most people can master nearly every Tool riff and solo in one afternoon illustrates that he is far from godly talented as so many believe.

You're right. I didn't think to get that technical.
6 Strings and 12 frets. 6X12 = 72. The 13th fret starts repeating the sequence at 1 octave higher.
There are 7 notes. A, B, C, D, E, F, G. The semitones occur as sharps and flats between each note except for B-C and E-F. So 5 semitones plus the 7 whole notes, essentially give us 12 notes.
Each string runs the 12 notes from the string played open to the 12th fret. If you play the string open and then play the note on the 12th fret, it is the same note at a 1 octave differential.
These same notes are also repeated at higher octaves as you move through the strings and that is a another lesson in itself.
So technically speaking, there aren't actually 72 notes to choose from, there are only 12. 12 notes repeated at 6 different octaves through 12 frets. Repeated again through a varying number (depends on the guitar) of higher octave frets past the 12th. Again, these frets repeat the same pattern of the first 12 frets at a higher octave.
Chords are created by simultaneously playing varying combinations of these 12 notes.
The whole point is that it's all been played before. All guitar playing and music in general is "recycled". That is the beauty of it. What makes it "good" is the unlimited amount of creativity you can apply to it and make it your own.
There are a limited number of colors in the spectrum and after all this time, people can still paint "new" and exciting art. Great abstract artists aren't considered mediocre at best because their art isn't full of technical detail.
My error here is joing a debate of opinion. Adam is mediocre to you outside of Tool and maybe he's great to me, and so-so to Tom.
Each is right in its own right (pun intended).

I also think that most of the "guitar gods" out there are fucktwats. John Petrucci can suck a dick, as can Satriani. But, really, I feel like I've heard most of my guitar-work in similar forms on previous albums...

isn't that just the open top string? lol yeah most tool tabs are fairly simple to play, with some more technical time beats being the hardest thing to master really

He sings.
He sucks at guitar.
The clean riff isn't just open D.

Most tabs in general are easily learned if you take the time and effort to do so. The difficult part is coming up with the stuff in the first place. I love the dynamic between creative artists and reactive artists.

I like how everyone is so sure that there is only 12 notes, or 7 notees and 5 semitones in existence...what you should of said was there are only 12 notes in the Western scale. Eastern music explores tones between semitones, for example the sitar, contains notes between notes, i'm not sure of the correct number of notes on eastern scales, but just because europeans divided their music up into 12 notes doesn't mean that's how many notes there are. Every slight change in frequency of a wavelength is a different note, if you look at it from a worldly point of view. so there is technically an infinite amount of notes to be explored, but much less that can be differentiated by the human ear.

The opening clean riff in Lateralus is from the Rush song Test for Echo. I'm pretty sure it was a tribute of some sort.

Yeah there's only so many different ways you can sneak pick scratches + feedback into a song, and he pretty much nailed it in the previous 4 records. His focus in 10kd seems to be finding some kind of melody in 3.5/8.76 time. Not much going on in his riffs.
