Hey, Rivek PMed me and says he misses everyone. I will post a few links he sent me on his musical projects. Gimme a little while though.

Yeah, I know that a friend and I are driving down on Fri, Feb 1st and planning on going out on Sat, Feb 2nd. I don't really know any details other than we are going to Soulard.

Is it a good time? I've never been.

Yeah, if we happen to cross paths that would be interesting.

Agreed, not bad, I would maybe work on the tone a bit to make the guitar a little thicker and I liked the middle section with the sustained chord and sort of trippy feel. the biggest addition would be good solid beat and some solid fills. Also, I think a second guitar coming in with a lead part would thicken it up a bit.

Since I know that Rivek is into trance and other types of techo music, it would be interesting to put in some electronic aspects into it and see what it does. That's the direction I sort of felt him going with it. A sort of Deftones or NIN feel.

Did you guys know that the band The Postal Service records all of their music this way with the members mailing the pieces to each other and each adding their own part? I had no idea.

I truly good cover is an awesome thing.

What are your guys' favorite cover songs of all time...

Personally, lately I am partial to Matisyahu's version of "Message in a Bottle" I'm not sure why, I mean I like Matisyahu but I hate that song.

I would really like to hear a good cover of "Paint It Black" by the Stones, there have been some really bad ones that I have heard and that song deserves a good one.

definitely,

I listened to it but couldn't really find a lead part that I thought fit. That's not really my strong point honestly, but I will keep plugging.

Re: EVERYONE IS WRONG!

A little gift from Rivek from beyond the grave:

Along the lines of the "form a band online" thing.

Here's some samples of songs I've cut on my own - Trent reznor style. The first one is a kinda industrial-ish demo and the second is a completed instrumental with a quieter movement and a louder movement - neither have vox because I don't do that. lol.

http://rivekthefallen.googlepages.com/spykedemo01.mp3

http://rivekthefallen.googlepages.co...-LookingUp.mp3

For further proof that I at least know a little about what I'm doing, the rest of the songs on my webspace:
Remix of a game tune done because a friend of mine said I couldn't
Another game remix, just because I loved the tune and wanted to reinterpret it

Also, some demos of weird triphop fuckery can be found at http://last.fm/music/seizures+incorporated.

We need to do this. I'm excited about it.

Can't wait to be unprobed. Tell the people I miss 'em.

...also post these tracks in the thread where we're talking about that, plz.

I've got only a few 'paint it black' versions:

Agony Scene
Anvil
Black Dahlia Murder
Deadsy
Earth Crisis
Eternal Afflict
Face To Face
Feelies
Glenn Tipton
Gob
Grip Inc.
Inkubus Sukkubus
Marduk
Mephisto Walz
Meteors
Nicotine
Quakes
Rage
Skrewdriver
Teaparty
Unseen
Vicious Rumors
W.A.S.P.

I hope it was of some use.

Re: EVERYONE IS WRONG!

The only one that I have heard on there is Black Dahlia Murder and couldn't take it. Marduk is sort of the same type of music so I doubt that I will like that either, I will check out some of these though.

The thing is that, when I like a cover usually, it's because they typically don't stray too far from the original but make it their own in some way, not totally change the song.

I can recommend the Earth Crisis version.

Marduk does a real sinister dark version (no fast one like BDM).

Inkubus Sukkubus is more gothic and both Meteors and Quakes are psychobilly versions. Stay away from the Nicotine one; poppunk/ska.

I've seen some of your samples. I dig man. I only wish I could get some of my licks on links. I'm currently trying to obtain some kind of recording device.

My criticism,

Learn how to record an electric guitar. It sounded like it was plugged direct-in, which for a distorted electric guitar is usually a big no-no. You'll be amazed what a properly placed SM57 will do for you. I like to play with multiple mic placements... In my best endevor, I used a bass drum mic and an SM57. I put the bass drum mic on the outer edge of the cone to pick up more of a bassy signal, and the SM57 on the center, to get the bright treble tone. Then you just EQ it and go through several takes before recording a final product. What program are you guys using?

Myspace compression doesn't make the guitars sound like you recorded them with a headset microphone. Granted it doesn't do much justice for music... but you guys can do way better as far as the recording process goes. As soon as I get a track up with an electric guitar I'll show you what I mean.

I'm about to get my masters in Audio Engineering... so yes, I know what I'm talking about.

Re: EVERYONE IS WRONG!

By the way, I'm talking about the distorted guitars. The clean guitars sound good, I'll give you that. It could be the equipment you're using. I would also reccomend using a compressor on your singers voice. How did you record everything? What program did you use? What mics did you use? What guitars/amps do you play?

At this point I'm willing to give you advice... but making excuses why your recordings don't sound good isn't going to help you. Don't get me wrong. I like the songs. The riffs sound good, and the compositions are solid... You guys need to jump in a professional studio and it would blow you away.

Yo Riv, dump the MG100 for one of the new JVM amps. Any good tube amp will sound better than any solid state amp, but with Marshall, it is absolutely NECESSARY! Their solid state stuff does not record well at all, and live, it doesn't cut through the mix.

You might not have to change your pickups if you switch to a tube amp.
I currently use Seymour Duncan JB pickups in my guitars going through a Fender Blues Junior for cleans and a Marshall JVM combo for the heavy stuff.

It's not about drowning out another instrument, it's all about the tone. I love Marshalls, I have always played them, but their solid state stuff really lacks that true Marshall tone.
Plus, with the natural tube overdrive, you can use less distortion, pump up your mids in the mix, and let your tone shine through. Just a voice from experience, that's all.

You missed my other post that said I also use a Fender Blues Jr. for my clean sound.
I do agree that you only get one good tone out of a Marshall, but that one tone you can't beat.
And I do LOVE the Peavey JSX. That is one killer fucking amp.
Almost sounds as good as a Soldano, only cheaper.

Fuck tubes, I don't care about tubes.
You can still scoop the mids on your amp, I was talking about the mids at the board.

Fuck tubes?? C'mon Riv, I gave you more credit than to think you would say that.
You can ask any guitar player anywhere, and they will agree with me.

Mesa Boogie, Fender, Bogner, Soldano, Diezel: 12ax7's, 6L6's, EL34's, all tubes that are key to some of the greatest guitar sounds EVER.

Not arguing, just stating a fact.

Everything sounds like that if you stretch a sound file too far.
The other day I was experimenting with sounds and stuff of the sort, and I accidentally killed a DNC_Crash because I stretched it too much.

Sounds similar to the sounds in Mantra.

More than wanting to know what caused the sound, I'd like to know why it's there. It may work as an introduction setting the mood for another song...or it could be the ending of "Ticks & Leeches" if you follow the Fibonacci order in the album.
